God bless Dean. I was privileged to be one of 8 backup singers on his TV show for 6 wonderful years. He was so delightful to work with, just a great guy, no star ego. I miss those years and have wonderful memories. RIP, Boss.

@King Royal Since your sentence structure is so poor and ambiguous it's difficult to understand who you are talking about using the pronoun "he" If "he" is Dean Martin I'm pretty sure he has not really taken up arms against anyone since WWII. If it's the son who is the "he" you are referring, he was captain the California National guard and you seem to have some knowledge about his participation in some conflict where "he" is responsible for an attack on some civilian population. Profound as you point may be, if you even have a point, some relevant context might help the casual observer understand to what you may be eluding. What you said is shallow, lacks any context and appears to be more focused on creating some acrimony rather than contributing to understanding or empathy. If you are asserting that Dean Paul Martin checked out a fighter/bomber, flew it over to Palestine and dropped lethal ordinance, single handedly I can assure you that this did not happen. In fact I have not read or heard and can find no information of any armed conflict that Dean Paul Martin was involved in. So perhaps you could provide some details and facts as to what you are referring. That way us objective folks may be enlightened. It would certain bolster your bona fides and make you look smarter than you appear to be.
He reminds me of my dad. My dad had multiple systems atrophy a bit like Parkinson's but not the shaking. If he was drunk he wouldn't be so clear headed. Seems like his brain wasn't sending messages very well. Beautiful man.

I really became a Dean fan when I found out he stood up for Marilyn Monroe during her troubles while they were shooting her last movie together, Something's Got To Give. He threatened to bail on the project if they replaced her. That made me appreciate the humanity of the guy.
Well since you made mention of M.M.....there was her manager that had invoked other side / demonic forces at one point for favor. I am one of the top scholars in this biographical area. S. Davis lost his sight, Martin lost a child etc....MM lost life in early demise. Also the same manger (one of many) with Dino was also a manager of Dino.....This stuff is real folks! my effort of exposing and my 1 cent. You can see how Dean Paul's death affected Dean Martin. What a parent goes through is something no one can know but the parent. I loved Dean Martin because he loved his family so much and was such a consummate performer. We miss you, Dean

I think the death of his son obviously affected him greatly, but I also have a feeling he must have had a stroke or been on a significant amount of pain killers during this interview because his speech was significantly slower and more ponderous than just a few years previously.
He was a life long smoker, which clearly affected his pep.
My parents lost their daughter within 6 months of her having a tiny, persistent cough.
I was a student pilot at Williams AFB in Arizona when Dean Paul was going through training. Even though he was the son of Dean Martin, he was not conceited or arrogant or stuck up in any way. He was a very nice personable guy like his Dad. It was a tragedy when he was killed and IMHO Dean never got over it.
I agree. Dean's later years were ones of a man still in great pain. I think Frank Sinatra got him to go back out on the road with him & Sammy Davis, Jr. for a Rat Pack reunion, but Dean was just no longer up to the task & bowed out after a few shows (I believe Liza Minnelli might have finished out the tour). In fact, his last decade or so, I am not sure Dean did much public performing at all.
Dean Paul was a perfect combination of Dean and Jeannie.
How would one get over the death of your child?
At best, you learn to keep going & hold them in your heart.
@jett woodward Yes, in his later years Dean just stayed pretty much by himself. There was an Italian restaurant he would go to almost every week in Hollywood I believe. He'd go there alone and eat alone. Sometimes people would come over for autographs, etc. and he was always gracious but the sad fact was he was alone. He was just never the same and totally understandable. Sinatra should have understood what Dean was going through but Sinatra was always thin-skinned. My hope is he made his peace with Dean before Dean's passing.
@jett woodward If you go on TH-cam to this: Martin and Lewis: The Myth of 20 Years of Silence you will see a video clip of Eddie Fischer doing a show circa 1958. He's on stage talking to Jerry when out from behind the curtain pops Dean! It's very funny and there's one or two more clips of Dean and Jerry circa 1960 or 61. Clearly they seem to have no animosity towards each other. My uncle once told me "They probably talk to each other whenever they have to, but I doubt that they see each other very often". I think that was pretty accurate. They had that bond of 10 years together but as with many relationships it had it's ups and downs. I hope at the end of Dean's life he was at peace with Jerry and I think he was.

People say Sinatra was the best singer but I think Dean had the better voice by far. His natural vibrato and smooth sound was beautiful...so melodic. I loved him in Rio Bravo and the songs he sang in it. Yes, to me, he was the better of the two.

Dean Martin was an incredibly generous man. I know people in upstate New York that knew him, and they told me of his generosity. He came from humble beginnings, achieved great success and never let it get to his head.

I had never seen this guy serious for 2 seconds, but here with this sincere interviewer and with more gravity in his personal life, Dean really opened up and was sober minded.
Dino said it himself in this interview. When a death happens close to home ... "It eats you up"! I truly believe he could not get over the death of his son and honestly believe he grieved himself to death. He was a great entertainer and he has been sorely missed and will continue to be.

You know Dean died of a broken heart. On that Christmas Day in 1995 I feel like he finally just gave into his sorrow & left this earth because he couldn't bear it anymore without Dean Jr. For me Christmas Day is both glad...& sad. I grew up with his Christmas music. I still play it. But I can't help but think that Dean left at a time we remember him most fondly...Christmas. He went on that day so we could remember him forever! I miss him. I still listen to his music. And every now & then I shed a tear.

You are exactly 100% right...I read that, after his son's terrible accident...he was "never" the same...My father...growing up.. treated me like crap. He told me I'd never amount to anything....If I had died...like Dean Martin's son did...I have this sneaking suspicion...my father would have said: "Oh, well..."

I totally relate to your story, my Dad was abusive to my Mother my older brother and younger sister, both physically and emotionally. When I came home in 1968 from Marine Corps boot camp that stopped. I thought about his upbringing on a ranch in Oklahoma, the oldest of 7 brothers, and how his dad was abusive. Long story short I understood why and decided that, that was one ☝️ trait that ended. We got real later and mom and dad were divorced for a year and realizing they loved each other, I was the Best Man at their wedding. I'm sorry you never heard these 3 words but he did tell me he loved me. If this helps anyone reconcile with the feelings that are similar then I'm glad I took the time to respond. If you are an abuser then STOP and ask yourself why.

As a father myself, who lost his only child, some days are so hard to remain positive, I still lose it from time to time. Coming up on 3 yrs now, still harbor alot of anger. They say, "time heals old wounds" but in my eyes, time isn't flying by fast enough...

victor was right His youth was a different story. People grow and change. The Dean Martin that we all know and love was a charitable and generous man, one who was a great friend and family man. That is what is important.
There was a moment on one of his Christmas specials when he hugged Dean Paul, and you could tell he just adored that kid. He was sweet with all of kids on the show, but it seemed to me that there was a special attachment to Dean Paul, and his father's pain about his death is painful to witness here. He's clearly gutted, even if he says he's a fatalist, the poor man.
He was a man with Class. Love you Dean Martin.
I'm from Philly, but Dean and my paths crossed once. On July 22, 1985, I was preparing to tee off at Riviera C.C. in L.A. Three men were playing a scramble and their last hole was the first. My two playing partners and I allowed them to play through. It was then that I saw a frail man getting out of the golf cart was Dean. He was my mother's favorite and I was going to ask if I could get a picture with him for my mom. But I didn't. He was so frail. It would have hurt my mom to see him looking like that. He still had a beautiful golf swing. My playing partners knew Dean as a member of the club and said Dean preferred Riviera over Bel Air as all the celebrities were at the latter, and Dean preferred to play with regular people. Classy.

Yeah, those guys live hard. Smoking and drinking every night and they never exercised. It was a different era. SDJ was dead by 65 from smoking and in Dean's late shows he would struggle for breath if he moved around too much. Frank's daughter talks about how frail he was in the end and it was shocking to her. Lesson learned guys. Don't smoke. If you drink moderate. Exercise. This is the most important thing you can do to keep yourself independent

Dean really began to go down hill after his son's tragic and untimely death. He was for nearly 50 years A GREAT, GREAT performer. He had style and lots of talent.

Rock music is my thing, but Dino is great, not was great, is great...he has a welcoming warmth in his voice that Sinatra doesn't have, and a great canon of songs and always had a good sense of humor, even as a youngster watched many of his TV shows (my dad was a fan) on ABC tv Australia. His backing band, the band of renown? and I remember himleaping up onto the piano, ha, ha. and didn't see any hint of nastiness in the man. Makes me want to go to Italy before I die, you could easily tour that country with his music as a backdrop.

Always loved Dean and his show in the '60's. He was simply the coolest guy on TV at the time. He would open his show sliding down that Fireman's pole, and inevitably make a self-deprecating joke about reading the cue cards. Dean had the best entertainers in the world as his guests, and always signed off with that friendly, "keep those cards and letters coming in..." From the time I was 7 years old, I always wanted a Ferrari because I'd heard that's what Dean drove. Great guy!

The stress on my mental health and looks were destroyed by the death from cancer of my happy marriage, after my husband passed I ages many years and lost all the pretty in me, I became a frumpy looking middle aged women from a very pretty girl, grief can destroy you , a death of a close loved one is the hardest thing to happen to your life, mostly besides a mate. A child, I was lost two but as. Very young girl I was able to make it without turning into an old lady like I did when I lost my husband,I just turned forty snd still very pretty but his death made me look about sixty a d I lost my monthly time, grief depending on a person’s personality can have drastic effects

Dean was one of the greatest of all entertainers and from this time (1987) one of the saddest. To lose a child is unimaginably appalling. And you can see it in his face. So sad. Still, we have the performances to remind us of a supremely talented man and yes that was his own unique hairstyle not a wig as someone wrote. We miss you Dean.

Agree completely. He did not get over his son's death. It occurred when he was an old man. He spent his last few years looking at old films of happier times in his life. Dean Martin was a great singer (really great), and a damn good actor.

I KNOW IT ISN'T EASY! I've had some very tragic shit happen to me as well losing both my parents when I was very young. It took decades to really get over it. My point was what physically killed Dean was his lifestyle, it had nothing to do with his son dying. He was going to continue smoking and drinking either way. That's just what he did and entertain people! :)
I had a crush on Dean Paul from about age eleven onward. I was driving to the grocery store when his death was announced on the radio. I had to pull over and stop because I'd begun to cry. My three little kids were in the car and were naturally enough frightened I'd begun crying for no apparent reason. I just told them I'd heard on the radio an old friend had died. This was accepted and we went to the store. But, I still miss him.
Even in his old age his voice was smooth as silk. RIP Paisan.

I had records and a little tape recorder and i flipped those over time and time again for all day as i played in my room. They just dont make music like that any more. Not even Buble can touch it.

What a singer he was on his day! And he was a good actor! To my recollection he was nominated once for a Supporting Actor award for his performance as a drunk cowboy with John Wayne in a movie Rio Bravo a Western. I miss his TV program on the 70's. He used to bring the best singers, actors of that time. I miss him very much!

Dean Martin was always a very underrated actor. Probably my most favorite film his is The Silencers and his character, super-spy Matt Helm. Played tongue-in-cheek and always non-plussed, it's a wonder example of Mr. Martin's understated acting skills.
His talking voice here, the tone, word pace...as he spoke...he sounds like Groucho Marx when they would interview Groucho in his later years. I closed my ears and listened to Dean and I "heard" Groucho. Can't explain it. Even at the end when he was telling the interviewer it was one of the best interviews he ever had -- that deep gravel voice. Spooky.
I feel sorry for Dean because he was always so enthusiastic, full of life and that was his style and approach almost throughout his career. This is interview is about eight years before his death. He seems out of it. The personality that was, wasn't there just the respectful man he was showed up. I believe the death of his son Dino changed Dean profoundly.
Dean speaks like a man far older than 70. The soul is drained. He talks about the death of his son & Dean is being polite because he's a professional. But you can see that he is uncomfortable. I sincerely believe Dean "died" the day they told him his son was killed.
I was always sad for him during this period. Concerned when he did disappear from the public eye. Always liked Dean even though he's not my generation. He was the epitome of cool...not the Beat Generation people. He had this confidence, the swagger, and humor. He knew it was all farce. never took it seriously. Dean Martin was and always will be...cool. I can't think of anyone in entertainment today who even comes close to this man's personality and style. None. RIP Dino...thanks a million for your variety show, your many roasts and your surprise walk-outs on Johnny Carson. I forgive you for putting your cigarette ashes into George Gobel's drink on one show. But that was one of the greatest unrehearsed bits I ever witnessed.

He didnt age because of death, death kills you, he aged because of LOSS and grief. Lack of good nutrition, exercise, hydration, depression, etc can have an effect on ones appearance and health. Falling into a depression is devastating and some people dont recover from it. From some of those actually close to him they have said in interviews the man imploded following his sons death.
Dean Martin was such a joy to watch on his TV shows and performing in Las Vegas. He was a sweet, sexy, multi-talented man. When Dean Martin Jr. died, that was about the end of Dino. He will always be respected, and always missed.❤️

There's a journal of psychology that calls the loss of a child "a catastrophic stressor." Dean clearly exhibits its effects. I also lost a son--in Iraq at age 20--but my experience was far different. I had surrendered my life to Jesus years before, and had an ongoing relationship with Him through prayer and Bible reading. Of course, my wife and I still cried and grieved, but at the same time, I especially marveled at the undergirding of peace I felt throughout, even while sitting graveside. It reminded me of 1 Thessalonians 4:13--that believers will not "grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope."
Well said. The release of the soul from a loved one enters the nature around us. Into the air and water and the trees, in a bird's song. The soul will always return to you through those mediums, and in that, the peace of being alone in the presence of your son.

Grief is a terrible hole one can't get out of: this man lost his parents and his brother in the span of 18 months and the death of his son really finished him off.
He was a born entertainer and an incredible singer with a voice that will forever be a reminder of his greatness.

John Martin They broke the mould when they made the entertainers of that generation, Dean, Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Perry Como and so many more. (and not just the entertainers. I know that I couldn't have survived all the hardships my parents , who were of the same generation as Dean, had to endure; the last years of WWI with the terrible loss of almost a whole generation of young men, The harsh Depression years, and then WWII.) The world has moved on since their time, and though we have made many advances, sadly I feel that we have also lost an awful lot in the process. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could somehow combine the best of both that era and the one we are living in now? An impossible dream I know.

Great interview by perhaps the most courteous interviewer I've ever watched, as she actually let him speak and finish his thoughts. Any Dean fans that haven't read 'Dino' by Nick Tasches should do so...it's a bit dark, but gives a good inside look at the real Dean Martin. By the point of this interview in '87, he was 70 and having some memory problems, and I'm sure his son's death didn't help. The fact that the interviewer was so patient with him made him at ease and willing to share. Even his ex-wife Jeanne claimed very few people got to know the real Dean, but this charming interviewer certainly shed some light on the "real Dean."
So Jeanne became his ex wife. After all that leaving his first wife for the 2nd to divorce him

I don't remember a day of my life with Dean not in it somehow. I grew up very near to Steubenville & was influenced by him one way or the other. Part of my heart died the day he died. But I keep him with me nonetheless. This interview is precious & priceless. I remember watching it back then. It's so bittersweet. He will forever be loved & missed. They just don't make 'em like this anymore!❤

My Mother was a big fan of his and she said after his son died in the plane crash, Dean was never the same.
Dean Martin clear at 7:08 really doesn't want to recollect about his son's unfortunate death. But ever the professional doesn't stop the interviewer and speaks about Dino. But I see a father who just wants to be with his son, and I hope they are now. Along with his other son Ricci and his daughter Claudia RIP. 🌹
Poor Dino....I can only imagine what he must have felt when his son died. My wife & I lost our child last year, she died at birth. It really hurt us then & it still hurts us now. We find ways to cope but time doesn't heal these sort of wounds....it sort of just dulls the sharp pains they create ....it dulls them just a little bit....I can only imagine the pain Dean & his wife & his family felt because Dean Paul was an adult & they had decades of memories. RIP to Dean, Dean Paul, & Ricci Martin.
Dr. Spectre I’m so sorry for your loss, I cannot imagine the painful year you must have gone through. In a way, I have been ‘lucky’ because I have only lost my parents and other older relatives, which is hard enough to endure but is at least the natural order of things. It is almost impossible to imagine the heartbreak of losing a child, whether as a baby in whom you have invested so many dreams, or as an adult that you have shared a lifetime of memories with. I hope that if you have a Faith that you have managed to find some comfort in that, and in leaning on each other. And I also hope that the passage of time will continue to ease some of the hurt and pain you have been through.

Although Dean Martin lived until 1995 he really died emotionally and spiritually when he lost his son. It was to much for him to cope with. This is not easy for me to say because to me Dean Martin is truly the greatest entertainer of the 20th century. There will never be another like him.
I adored Dean ..... just the perfect entertainer ..... such warmth, charm & an abundance of talent ....plus....a modest man .....god rest your soul Dean .

elvicare35 I love at the beginning he says that he is only here at the Palladium because "that where all the big stars perform" It's almost like he thinks he's not worthy to be on the same stage as the other stars he names, although he was at least as big as them, if not even bigger. That's one of the (many) things I love about Dean, that he was, as you say, always humble and I don't think he ever really understood just how huge and well-loved star he was. He certainly never forgot his humble beginnings, or how lucky he was that his life could have turned out so differently. (As he often said; "Who'd have thunk it, for a boy from Stuebenville Ohio?") And you're right, for all the tragedy that was going on his life at the time, he never lost that legendary charm! Kudos too for the lovely empathetic interviewer, who asked her questions, especially about Dean Paul, so kindly and gently and wasn't at all pushy.

Fabienne De Pauw I know, the expression on his face when she brought up the subject of Dean Paul @7.08 just broke my heart. I'm sure they must have cleared it with him before the interview whether he was prepared to discuss it , but he was clearly still struggling and like he said "when it hits home, it eats you up" As a Mum myself, I can't even begin to imagine the pain that he (and Jeannie too, of course - she once said in an interview after the accident that she "would never know pure joy ever again") was going through. No parent should have to endure a loss like that, especially one so kind and gentlemanly as Dean.

But Jeanne was a very strong woman.. iT brook her heart too but iT did'nt brook her life... but Mister Dean melted down ..( like his grandson Alexander,Dean-Pauls Son)said in an interview.... After he retired he was going fishing with Alexander and Alexander said.. all of a sudden I felt his arm around my shoulder...
