    I was very young watching that telethon when Dean came onto the stage. Didn't even know who Martin & Lewis were at that point, but that moment led me to watch every one of their movies and I continue to do so. Those two were pure magic together.

    I was watching that in 1976 , live....at late hour almost 10 pm at 7 years old ...and my dad was in shock and told me that Dino and Jerry had not been on stage together in years ...you could see the shock in Jerry's face ...I think they sang together I have never seen a tape of it but I remember it with my dad ❤

      I too remember seeing it live just like you said it was late. Any immediately thereafter the telethon the news was on showing what happened at the telephone moments before. I was always a Dean Martin fan. And to be honest with you, being that this was a Jerry Lewis telethon and I knew that Jerry was Dean's partner, I was secretly wish for one day though I knew it was almost impossible, I wish was that Dean Martin would somehow come on the Jerry Lewis telethon so that I may see them together after all of these years. And my wish finally came true. They broke up in 1956, I was born in 1960 I was around the age of four or five when I remember hearing and seeing Dean and Jerry on TV and at the movies at the time, they were both household names and everyone around me from Young to older people love to duo. Being that I was a kid, I liked comedy and that's when I really enjoyed their movies. I also remember hearing Dean for the very first time. It was a silky smooth voice that I fell in love with. It was there and then that I realized that the man that was singing (Dean) was the Dean as Dean Martin Jerry Lewis

    I read Jerry's book; he clearly loved Dean. Dean loved him back but not as intensely, and Jerry was deeply hurt at some of Dean's slights. My impression is that everyone loved Dean and his smile, and Jerry envied the ease with which Dean lived life and had everyone eating out of his hand due to his handsome face.
    Ironically, it was Jerry that got the vast lion's share of the praise from the press during their 10 year run, and Dean was constantly passed over.

    • @moxievision
      @moxievision 8 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      I've read in more than one book that success went to Jerry's head very quickly, and he became this weird hybrid of a tyrant and a spoiled brat. He'd get upset if Dean got funnier lines than him in the movies or on the Colgate Comedy Hour, and would throw fits until he got his way. I think the Nick Tosches bio of Dino is fairly accurate in this regard, that Martin felt he could do better on his own without being chained to "a performing monkey". Dean may have slighted Jerry, but Jerry's egomania probably prompted it.

    • @lindashelley3635
      @lindashelley3635 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Dale Holmgren It wasn't just his looks, in almost every interview I've ever read or watched everyone said that Dean was just naturally charming and funny. He was popular because he was just a genuinely nice guy, easy-going and relaxed with very little ego, whereas Jerry in contrast apparently often acted like a spoilt child who had to be the centre of attention all the time or he would throw a tantrum.

      Linda Shelley Yes, Dean had a little of everything, but in Lewis' book about their 10 year union, many times the women fell in love with him before they even met Dean. They both slept with a lot of women. Lewis was no slouch in the looks dept. when he wasn't mugging, but Martin was still in another league. seniorcitylocal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Jerry-Lewis.jpg

      @@richardgallerani8817 Listen to all of Jerry's interviews here on TH-cam (I've been passionate about these two guys since the lockdown due to covid-19, I have a lot of time to use), read the book written by Jerry "Dean and Me" . Jerry always knew how great Dean was. Since the beginning of their friendship. Too much pressure had those kids around them. Perhaps too much work will have worn them out. Jerry has always admitted that, at some point, he went crazy and selfishly thought more about himself. On various Tumbrl I also read other news about them that are not here. The situation is complex. They have also become legend on their own. Jerry, aged 69, landed on Broadway with the musical Damn Yankees, enjoying great success. Unfortunately in the late 1960s a bad fall injured his spine forcing him to take Percodal, a powerful addictive pain reliever to ease the back pain that had almost brought him to the brink of suicide. He only stopped hiring Percodal in 1978. Since then he has had an unending series of health problems, including a double open heart bypass, which will surely have blocked him at work. Jerry never had an easy life. But his immense willpower made him live to 91 years ...

If Dean and Jerry kept on speaking term after 1956, maybe 1-2 public performance or just photos of them together in public a year, would do good and fans won't be as hurt as they felt after that infamous breakup.

A year later and San Diego was on his concert tour, so I took my Mom, who was Miss Minnesota 1947 and first runner-up to Miss America, and went on to sing with the NY Met Opera for a year or two. Anyway, vi a stage manager, I got a note to Sinatra, and amazingly he remembered me and he had my Mom and I backstage afterwards and my Mom and Frank even sang a duet together. It was even more surreal.

    Jerry Lewis was and is one of my top favourite actors. Dean Martin was also a favourite actor with Mr. Lewis Jerry. Back when Jerry and Dean stopped acting together, I heard that Dean wanted his singer carrier to be more than movies he wanted the clubs etc and with doing movies with Jerry Dean felt that he could not move forward that with Jerry and Dean together was to acts that made people laugh. The other reason I heard is that Jerry did not like the idea of Dean cheating on his wife. Jerry felt Dean should be married and no fooling around with other woman. Jerry was Married and so was Dean at one time. There was no fooling around with each others lives, it just that Dean was a womanizer. Dean has past away many years and I rather not say anything else. Jerry loved Dean as friend and Dean felt the same. When Frank Sinatra got them on one of Jerry telethons Jerry could have cried and Dean also. It was heart warming. Dean went on doing Movies TV Shoes etc. but if you ever watched Deans show you could see the fun and laughter Dean had the joking around never left him and it shows that he must have loved being an actor and making people laugh, the only thing that really made Dean leave I believe is that Jerry Lewis became the main actor, people loved this crazy young actor as so did I, so this is why Dean moved on. I am just giving my opinion so don't take my word. I believe if you dig far enough, there is a history on the internet you can find anywhere. Jerry, Thank you for your heart warming generosity to people who need someone like you. I wish you long life and happiness.

      Mr. Lewis was no angel as far as bedding women other than his wife. It is reported he has a daughter that he doesn't acknowledge with a Copa Showgirl many years ago. His oldest son did a DNA test and says she is his sister. Not a very nice man, Mr. Lewis. He always had to be "on" - Dean could hardly finish a song without Jerry's clowning around. In any event, Mr. Martin was low-key- Jerry Lewis had to be into everything - I believe that was the main reason for their breakup. Whatever the reason - both did well separately.

      edwardare1 Jerry interrupting, along with all other fooling was part of the act. I cannot understand how people don't recognise that. No Jer was not an angel and he was open about that. He didn't publicly acknowledge his daughter as that would have been the end of his career; it's really not our business anyway. It was Hal Wallis who pushed for Jer to be the main act in their movies. Jer tried to fix it, but Hal wouldn't listen; he knew that people went to the movies to see Jer. It hurt Dean to always be overlooked and that is why he left. There was a lot of pressure put on them and it was constant; understandable that it would get too much.

    0:18 Not true at all, just a nice story to make that MDA appearance more special. Jerry saw Dean MANY times between '56 and '76 and there's plenty of footage available showing them together.

    Looking at the video on You Tube featuring that 1976 reunion at the MDA telethon, Jerry Lewis apparently forgot what really happened. Frank Sinatra did pledge money on behalf of his grandchildren but then said that he had a 'friend' who like what Lewis was doing and ask the friend to come out on stage. Then Dean Martin walked out and the audience went crazy with applause. Lewis, who appeared to be taken aback by this, did hug Martin and performed a short ad-lib routine with him, but his body language showed that he was not comfortable at all with the situation. His arms were folded when Martin first appeared on stage and after the song Martin and Sinatra sang was over Martin made a gesture by walking over to where Lewis was standing but Lewis stayed behind his podium instead of meeting Martin half way on stage. Granted both men finally reconciled their differences and became friends again until Martin's death in 1995. Despite the books and articles written about both men the reality is that when people don't speak to each other for two decades that normally is because of some deep-seeded animosity.

      Jerry wants to be remembered as Mr Nice Guy. But that's not who he was for 95% of his life.

      That could've been because of the Percodan that he was addicted to at the time. He'd accidentally fallen while taping the Andy Williams Show and hurt his back. He became addicted to Percodan and was taking it when this was tapped. The pain killer could very easily account for the reactions that you're referring to.

      Ima you must have spent 95% of his life with him then to know that!
      He clearly crossed his arms because his mike was taken off him. it's obvious by their eyes, smiles and tears how they felt.

    I know that Lewıs gets a lot of bad publıcıty for his aloof personalıty, but one of sweetest storıes was his coming to Deano's (Dean's son's funeral servıce). He snuck into the church, stood ın the back, paid his respects, then left. Later that evening he and Dean spoke on the phone for a great amount of time. His family said that it meant the world to hım.

    I had some respect for Jerry after reading his book, but later found out how horrible he was to people, and I lost all respect for him. Sexually abusing women he worked with, cutting his kids out of his will, beating his kids until they hid from him when he came home from work, etc.
