Looking forward for more videos, you’re really good at explaining and making it easy to understand. I’m 15 and I would love to learn how to play so I thought about buying a set and learning it, thank you for putting this video out (:
I really love this video so much. Very informative for beginners like myself. I appreciate this effort! Could you do a video on winning combinations or sorts?
I'm recently learning Mahjong from my friends and family. Chanced upon your video and found it a very good summary of the game. Could you please make the next video on scoring (Tai2 in mandarian). I am rather confused about that as there are so many possible winning hands. Thank you.
When I first learned Hong Kong mahjong some years ago, I was taught that if I can only play one suit at a time meaning I'm not allowed to mix the suits in one game. Also, once I've decided on which suit to play, I must decide on whether I want to chi or pong with that suit as I can only choose one or the other. This forces the player to stratagise from the start by observing the tiles discarded from the other players and also to mask their own moves and try to mislead others.
I don't know if you'll see my comment, but I truly appreciate the way you explained the game. Will you please make a video for Riichi and Cantonese Mahjong also? Im trying to learn as many versions as I can. I've already learned the American version.
I have only played one game of Chinese Mahjong, and the players went very fast, even though there were two beginners, myself being one of the beginners. Your video will help me at the next game! So clear! However, the set we played with did not have any animals. It had only 144 tiles, not 148.
Special hands in SG Mahjong I need to clear up. Is there Humanly Hand (天胡,地胡,人胡) in SG Mahjong and how to form? Is there Nine Gates in SG Mahjong, and can it still qualify for Nine Gates if open melds have been made?
@@Kirov4ever I've never seen anyone play Nine Gates (九连宝灯) before, but now that you said it I went to read up on it. You cannot have any exposed tiles (i.e. melded tiles) for Nine Gates. I referred to: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singaporean_Mahjong_scoring_rules Your 胡 questions can be found in the website as well.
Yes there are 天胡,地胡,人胡. They are very rare, so I will focus on other more common hands. Nine gates is the rarest of them all, this is a type of 一色 hand, where you will be waiting from 1 to 9 of the same suit!
Thanks! Usually a box of mahjong there could be 4 blanks, 4 clown and 4 red chinese character 'fei' tiles. They are used like a wild card, they can be any card. They can act as any card apart from animal and flower tiles. It is illegal to discard them while playing. Depending on the house rules, often these tiles are not included when playing.
1.What happnes when you “kang” and left with a last tile in your deck? 2. Can you only Kang when a player throw from the left of you or can you do it wherever like pong? 3. When is it aloud to pong, kang or chi from the discarded pile? Is it right after the leader throw his/her first tile at the start of the game or is it when every one has picked up their first tile from the first draw wall?
1. Then you will have the last draw! And if you win its +2 points (last tile + kong up) 2. Kong works like pong! 3. This is not monopoly so, right from the start!
Question: When someone makes a 'pong', they discard a tile so they have 13 again. Now, is it still their turn? Or is it the person on the right's turn now? Also, my set doesn't have animal tiles :/ do you need the animal tiles and flowers to play this style? Very nice video! Looking forward to seeing the scoring system video!
To answer your question, once a player calls a pong and throws his tile, it’s the next person’s turn (the one on his right). Animal tiles are only applicable for singaporean style mahjong; most mahjong styles do not have animal tiles, so unless you want to play singaporean rules, it is okay if your set does not have them.
Very well explained! Though i have a few questions. 1. When the player on my left throws away a tile that i want (3 identical tiles), can i say "pong" to take that tile to match with my other 2 identical tiles? 2. When the player infront of me or on my right throws away a tile that i want (3 in sequence), can i take it? And what do i say? Thank you!
1. Yes you can! 'Pong' can be done when ANY player discard a tile that you want to match with. 2. Nope you cannot! Unless that is your winning tile, then yes.
@@mahjong1019 Continuing off his example in #1: After he calls 'Pong' and takes the tile, will the next turn be continuing counter-clockwise from his turn or will it continue counter-clockwise from the person he took the tile from? Thank you~
What happens if a person draws a flower during the game? Do they put it down and draw from the flower pile during the same turn or do they have to wait for their next turn to draw without discarding?
Question no1: I assume that there is none tiles left after building the wall as long as you don't have "animal" tiles Question no2: when breaking the wall you create both the dead wall (for drawing when having flowers/seasons/kongs) and alive wall (for drawing the tiles). How many tiles shall dead part contain?
Is this style the basic with modifications based on culture? Or is the game widely different if played elsewhere. I'm going to be playing with some Filipino family members and don't want to embarrass myself:)
No, the flower pile is determined by the number indicated by the dice rolled by the host. Players would draw flower tiles from the flower pile following the sequence and move on to the next wall when necessary in the opposite direction.
Question. You can only take a tile that has just been discarded by a player right? Can’t pong/chi any tile that was already there out on the table (discarded previously). Thanks!
If player at E discards a tile and player at West calls Pong, after he takes the tile and discards one, who plays next - does turn go back to South or to North?
So whats the purpose of the animal and flower tiles if you are just going to get rid of them every time you have them/drew them? and also what if both players says "Pong" at the same time?
1. The animal and flowers tile are for points (which will be explained further in future videos) 2. There is no way that could happen: When a player shouts 'pong' it means that the player has 2 identical tiles and a similar one has been discarded by another player. Since there are only 4 identical tiles of each tile in every deck, it is not possible to have 2 players shouting pong at the same time

What happens if I draw a flower tile during the gameplay ? Do I reveal it and draw another one from the flower pile or do I have to keep it in my hand??
Well, if you think of it from a logical perspective. If you throw a tile that can be anything, doesn't it mean that anyone can 'pong' and this will disrupt the game flow (as there is one additional tile on the floor). Furthermore, this go against "pong" rule which states that anyone can "pong" regardless of who threw it
so when the original host becomes 南, when he pong 南 he gets one tai rite? then the player on his right becomes 西? oh yah, how many tiles shld be in the flower pile?
Because when you draw tiles you always begin from the head of the pile, which is from right to left. Except for flower pile, it goes in the reverse direction. Everytime you draw from either side of the pile, it has to be in sequence. So that’s why you can’t simply skip any tiles.
Kennedy O thank you. Also is there ever a situation where all the tiles have run out and nobody has won? I ask because what if during drawing and discarding tiles, players have forgot to cal pong or chow when they could’ve which could result in this?
The game will end when a player wins, or when there is 7 and a half stack left in the wall (there is a term for this, "qi tong ban". Or 15 tiles), the game will end in a draw
