  • Welcome to I’ll Knit (& Spin!) If I want To! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all every Friday doing my best to answer your questions!

In this week’s episode we cover:
    1. Hi Andrea, I started the Stria cardigan this week, I’m loving the squish factor of fisherman’s rib! My question is: all the contrast color ends for the stripes run down one side, did you weave them all in, or, since I will be picking up stitches all along the front, can I just tie and knit the two strings for each contrast color stripe, since that edge will be hidden. Thanks!
    2. Hi Andrea, I think your new patterns Nebula and Brume are so lovely and I want to knit both! However I have started spinning this year and am wondering if there is any way to spin a yarn similar to the lovely Oh Dang, original or DK....am I crazy to even try to attempt this? I have spindle spun and spun on the wheel (Kromski Sonata) and my long draw is coming along! Or what kind of yarn/ fiber should I try to spin to get some of the gorgeous fluff in these patterns? Thank you for all that you do- I look forward to your podcasts every week!

    3. Hi Andrea. I’m working on your “Tessellated Cardigan” and I have subbed in a sport weight non-superwash yarn for the main color (Wilder by Spincycle). I made a swatch and obtained the correct gauge. Since non superwash yarn doesn’t grow as much as superwash (you’ve used and recommended superwash in the pattern) should I knit the body an inch longer than the pattern instructs? You’ve mentioned that the body will grow an inch or so after blocking which I imagine has to do with the superwash yarn used in your sample… my swatch did not grow much after blocking. Would you steam block before splitting for the yoke? Move stitches to waste yarn and wet block since that is how I will wash the sweater when finished? I REALLY want to love this item when it’s finished! Thanks so much for your input! Take care!

    4. Hi Andrea! I just took a pretty big plunge for me and invested in The Farmer's Daughter OhDang!. I'm very excited because regular mohair can really agitate my tactile sensitivity in a way that suri doesn't. However, I am now I'm facing a bit of indecision. I was planning on knitting the long sleeve nebula but I also love the design of the DK weekender. Ideally, I'd like to have the hi-lo hem and ballon-ish sleeves of the nebula with the faux seam of the weekender. Do you have any suggestions for blending these patterns? Which pattern would you recommend using for gauge and stitch count etc.? Thank you so much for your patterns, podcast, and wonderful advice!!!!

    5. Andrea, I love your designs. I’m thoroughly in love with the Tessellated Cardigan. I’d love to knit this with one modification. Rather than having it be a V-Neck, I’d love to knit the front straight up to the neck. I’m assuming it would be a matter of eliminating decrease where the V-Neck begins. Would I be correct? Any other thoughts about how I would do this?
    Today I am wearing Nebula

I always weave in my ends as I go, that way when you’re done, you’re done.

I weave in ends before starting knitting again...just for a few minutes before a good sit down. By the finish, there will still be some still to do, but not many.

Thinking of the second question: blending some angora fluff in with some wool would make a great yarn with a lovely halo. Also, spinning one strand of angora and plying it with a wool would also make a fluffy yarn.

Can you weave in the ends by catching the floats after every stitch?

Hi not sure if this is correct forum to ask a question. I am currently knitting your gorgeous Nightshift Shawl in spin cycle yarn. As a new shawl knitter his round you recommend blocking? Should I pin or just gently ease it in to shape wet? Many thanks Fay

Would the shifty cardigan pattern help at all with modifications for a tessellated cardigan modification to a crew neck instead of a v neck?
