I got a 2022 RAV 4 hybrid xle premium last June, my second RAV 4 replacing a 2001 model that finally gave up the ghost after safely and successfuly carrying me well over 230, 000 miles. I bought a used 2021 RAV4 Hybrid XLE Premium about a week ago and am really enjoying it so far. I love all the informational displays so I can see how my driving style improves or hurts my gas mileage. I just hit 39 mpg this morning, and I'm hoping with a bit more adjusting to my driving style I can hit 40+ mpg eventually. Seeing the EV symbol come on in slower city driving is very satisfying knowing they're essentially "free" miles! I also love how quiet the car is in EV mode. I'm not a fan of loud cars or traffic noise.

@@brianruperti thank you... new vehicles are so hard to get right now. We have our dealer a deposit to try and find one in Moondust. So far we've stuck out within 500 miles of Kansas City.

Is it best to runs car for a few mins before driving off on a cold morning? You mention that hybrids have a warming system. Does it use petrol to heat the car if you turn on heating? In a Toyota Corolla for instance. Tnks so much.
Waiting on my RAV4 Limited Hybrid. A video on programming would be helpful. Coming from a 2008 Sonata probably the last car that you just put key in and go! Only thing I had to program was clock and set radio stations lol.
@@brianruperti blizzard Pearl, black interior. Now I’m rethinking Grey interior 😆 hard to know which colour as I haven’t seen grey in person. I should just stop changing! My dealership says I should be hearing early January about car being in production, finally.
There are 9 modes of operation for the transmission, if we can call it that. It blends the electric motor and the engine seemlessly, depending on the state of charge, the throttle input, ect... Sounds complicated, but it's just computer stuff. If you don't mind how a CVT feels (the CVT drone when accelerating), it's a great system, the E-CVT transmission is virtually indestructible, since it has no high-wear parts, unlike your typical CVT or Double-clutch transmission, and it's mechanically very simple. Leave it in Normal, the other settings just map the throttle and other various bits, and are kind of pointless. Eco just makes the car too sluggish, EV setting is really not that useful. With a bit of trying, you can save 15-20% fuel compared to normal driving, especially around town. You won't save anything on a highway though. If you don't like the engine droning, Honda has a very good system too, and probably easier to get the best out of it. As for the rest of the competition, ... Nah.
Brian can you do a 2022 Tacoma review just like you did your 2021? I know they’re similar almost the exact same, but would love to hear and see your side on it!
Great video! I'm disappointed that my dealership didn't explain things better to me. I just got the 2022 Rav4 XLE Hybrid in Magnetic Grey. I have learned so much from your videos so far. Do you have a video on how to get the best MPG on a Rav4 Hybrid? Thanks!
@@brianruperti Thanks for useful video! The lady has Toyota Yaris 2018 Hybrid and I payed my RAV 4 XLE PREMIUM. Toyota Hybrid are fantastic cars - easy to drive, economic and also powerful in my case RAV 4 is fun to drive and with electric motors gives this “extra up” to make the sport mode really fun to drive! Good luck and keep going like that👏
I hope you get paid for these videos, Brian, as they are very good. Just bought a 2023 RAV4 Hybrid Premium, Lunar Rock with black interior. It is a Japanese made car with the cool wheels. Hmm that’s a dive in MPG. Might want to start with checking tire pressure, engine air filter, and extra cargo being carried. If still worse, you may want to stop by service.
Again another great video. I picked up my 2021 rav4 xle hybrid last Thursday and I love it. Do you think you can do a quick video on how to break it in? Toyota says it needs 600 miles to do so. Thank you again.
Thank you for your support! Congrats on the new car! What color! I can tell you my recommend break in here: first 600 miles: *try not to hard stop *no heavy acceleration *no long trips *keep rpms 4K and under (mid range and under for hybrid) *do not surpass 70mph *allow for variation in rpms (all below 4K/mid range) Hope that helps!
@Salsa King I would love to know as well as I’m almost at 600 miles and I got this exact model exactly a week ago lol kind of scared because I broke a few of the rules already
🙈 I am thinking of buying a second hand Toyota Corolla saloon 2020 model so it will be broken in. This was new to me. I didn’t realise you had to break in a hybrid.
Couple of crazy questions.... I always wondered what will happen if I or someone in my car Accidentally touched the park button !?! what Does the car do ?!? Does it damage the transmission OR just the breaks luck on the wheels and nothing gets damaged ?!? 2 - can I connect a small portable solar panel to any of the batteries , could I get a longer range electric drive from my 17 prius prime plug in ?!?
I don’t know ever would happen I imagine it wouldn’t let you park while moving. I would consult with your service center on if connecting solar panels is a thing you can safely do.
Thank you so much! We just got our cross hybrid from the dealership the other day. We were running short of time and couldn't get a tutorial. I've been driving it the last 2 days and not really understanding it. This video really helped. I do have a question. How do you input the gas prices? A friend of mine had a Prius a few years back that could give him detailed information on how much a trip cost him or how it compared to his last ice car.
Two questions. Are Toyota AWD hybrids faster since there is a second engine providing torque? (Im looking at an AWD Sienna hybrid) Does the battery capture regen energy faster with AWD since there are potentially two electric engines that are capable of providing power?
Great questions. Generally the hybrids are faster yes. The battery uses regen braking to recharge so both variants will reboot just as effectively. Enjoy!
Thanks! You mention the green car “EV” showing up - but what has to happen for it to show up? What did you do to know you were about to see the green EV car icon?
But I actually have not yet figured out how to turn off the “engine” - for example (I’m assuming), to sit in the parked car, using the air con and listening to music. (I’m too lazy to consult the manual). Is that what you mean by “when engine is off”?
Great video! So helpful. It's easy to forget some to the stuff we hear at the dealership. I personally had heart eyes looking at my new car so some of the information didn't stick 😂 I got a 2022 Toyota Yaris Cross early March and I love it. My first hybrid so the silent engine took some getting used to lol. The only hiccup I've had is not being able to find my multimedia device ID to register it on the MyT App. Am I missing something obvious? It's no biggie and I know I could go to the dealership but just haven't had the time. Anyway great video. Keep em coming 🙂
Have had issues with moisture smell. The Aircondioning hose was cleared and the smell disappeared for a week or so. But it has come back again. Anyone else having moisture smell? If yes have you had a permanent resolution? 2021 Corolla hybrid.
Hi Brian! I bought 2024 Hybrid Camry SE yesterday. First time driving hybrid Camry. I’m interested to learn more about the sport mode. Does the car in stop position to change from normal to sport? When can I use SPORT mode? Thank you! I like the way you explain things. A bit too fast for me but I’ll catch up or rewind. 😅. Thanks for your help.
Hi Brian! So sorry for late response. You’re so good in keeping up with all your fans! I took a drive yesterday in Louisiana on HWY 90. The sport mode… OMG, I loved it. Thank you!!!
What's the difference between EV mode and ECO mode? It sounds like they do the same thing. Am about to buy a Camry, really appreciate your informative videos.
Brand new 2022 RAV4 XSE here. What is best gas? Regular or Premium? Can you confirm? Thanks again for all of the GREAT information you provide. Easy to understand and incorporate. Bryan
@@brianruperti I’ve used it on mountain drives and the battery seems to charge much quicker and this is the only time I have seen my battery level full. The Rpm goes very high (I took it off B mode when the rpm was getting close to the red line)even though I am not accelerating, is this using fuel? Or is it just rpm from the regenerative process? (Sorry I am in Australia so this our day time. )
@@7thplanet121 Yes it’s supposed to help regenerate the battery quicker. I would recommend keeping the speed slow enough to not ride past 4K RPM. After 5k RPM you’re really revving out the engine. It will use fuel when the engine is revving. That’s how the battery gets its juice. As well as from your brake system. Hope that helps.
You said that the hybrid system is lighter because there is no drive shaft. Two other videos said that the hybrid system is 400 pounds heavier. Because now there is 2 motors under the hood and a heavy battery pack under the vehicle. Yes you do get better gas mileage. But the hybrid is heavier.
Sure but what matters in the end when a Corolla ts consumes like a smal petrol car id say thats good Engineering 30% more range is advertised and it shows in my wallet as proof plus reliability is all i care about
Did they change the location of the high voltage battery? newer models have it under the rear seat... right? How does the AC get powered in hybrid RAV4 ??
What is the difference between the EV mode and ECO mode? Another question: Does it make sense to buy a hybrid RAV4 instead of RAV Prime? I mean how much of a difference do 302 hp vs. 219 hp and the ability to charge the onboard battery of the mains make? The underlying reason, of course, is to save some money considering the price difference and the dealer markups for the Prime version, and long waiting times.
EV mode means electric vehicle so engine is off. Eco mode means whether engine is on or off it drives more modest and conservative. Saving fuel and energy. Depending on your budget and fuel saving needs, the prime is a great option but your passion for its style and drive has to justify the markup. If you’re not driving a lot you won’t get the money back you’ve spent on a prime and that’s where the hybrid shines. The prime is way faster. Hope that helps.
Tried to lease a Highlander Hybrid last month, after having a VW Atlas for the past 3 years. However, the VW people were very competitive and I went with the 2022 Atlas Execline instead. Saving about $1000.00 per lear in lease financing.
Hi Brian I have a toyota alphard hiybrid 2005 , how do I use the two pin electric plugs front&rear like the cigarette lighter, is there a special plug that I require, thanks Dave Bowley
Thank you this is very informative and straight to the point. We are thinking about getting a hybrid Highlander or Grand Highlander and I have a question regarding the switch from EV to gas. Can this be done while the vehicle is in motion or do you have to stop and park and change it and do you have to crank the vehicle to get it back to gas mode? Thank you.
Enjoy your TH-cam channel. I just bought this RAV4 hybrid. Has 75,000 miles on it. Concerned about battery. I hanever been able to get the battery to show full charge. Recently on a trip on the interstate this, in the picture is the best it would do. When it gets to three empty bars from top it starts using from the battery. Is this normal? Is there an adjustment needed for that.? I could figure out how to send the picture. What it is the picture of the engine running the car at 74 mph. Also pulling voltage from the battery with only 4 bars of battery. The battery level never gets higher. I had driven on interstate 30 minutes when picture was taken.
Thank you. I don’t know if this is normal per se. I know all the hybrid batteries will reach as high as they can, given how they’re being driven. If the car is regularly netting 39-41mpg and it drives well, then I would say it’s doing its job. If the mileage is off, I’d get it looked at. But if you have concerns, it always helps to have the service center taken a look and make sure all is well.
@@brianruperti being a Broadcast engineer working with batteries. When you can’t get a battery to go full charge, in the past, has pointed to issues. Or the battery will be short lived. I would like to be able to use the EV mode in my subdivision. When I push EV get error not available battery low. I went to Toyota store and couldn’t get past the service department gate keeper. Like I was bringing a frivolous law suit or something.
I’ve heard (not seen) that Energy Monitor no longer displayed on center media screen of 2025 Camry. True? Can it still be utilized from Driver Gauge Cluster (DGC)? Particularly want to know if Energy Monitor appears on 7” DGC of 2025 Camry LE. ThankU.
Great review. Very informative. So I’m planning on replacing my factory rims for some more customize rims. Would it affect the performance of the hybrid system?
Thank you. Yes it will. It can effect the system by changing how it interprets vehicle speed. The extra weight of different rims/tires could possibly strain the system/transmission. I am not a technician. So take this and combine it with your own research. But if you keep the wheel size about the same and don’t get very heavy hardcore tires, I imagine you’d be fine. But remember, the closest to stock you stay, the more reliable you’ll be. In my opinion there is no arguing that.

Hi Brian.I loved your crash course. I just got a 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross XSE Hybrid (6 miles) a week ago. I had a Honda accord V6 sedan for 16 years. I am a senior in my 70's. I think I made a decision too quick on purchasing this car. I do like it, however it makes a loud noise and I have taken it in to service twice and they told me to just drive it a while. I don't think the noise is normal, so when it made the noise again I had the service manager ride with me and he said he didn't know what the noise was, so I have to take it back in this Wednesday. Yesterday when it was 55 degrees here in Denver, it didn't make the noise. So I guess its more so when its cold. Any suggestions? I currently have 100 miles on the car now. Thank you for your response in this matter.
Hi thank you for watching and congrats on your car. If you feel the noise is not good and the service manager is concerned, then I would press the matter.
Yes so if you wanted to have AC on and music but not have the car on, that’s accessory mode. It’s a battery drainer but it’s doable. It’s the same as when you want to roll windows up without turning car on.
I heard the this generation of the Rav4 hybrid has wind noise issues, but the issue was addressed in the 2022 model. Have you heard anything about it Brian?
I haven’t heard much about wind noise complaints. I’m sure if anyone that purchased from me had the issue it was remedied in service. But my clients usually bring up any issues with me and they’ve all been very happy!
Can you speak on the fuel issue. Supposedly Toyota reserves almost 2 gallons of fuel after your fuel light comes on. It’s very frustrating wish I could just fill my car up to capacity of the tank. I don’t fill comfortable driving after the fuel light is on.

Silly question, how do you put it on battery (accessory) mode only without starting the car?
Without pressing the brake, press the push start button once for radio, second time for radio and AC, third time to power down.
Great review I just bought xle 2021 hybrid all wheel drive absolutely love it getting on average 44 miles per gallon they asked me from Toyota did I have garage to park the rav 4 into I do it stays about 15 20 degrees warmer in winter thinking it's about the battery
Thanks! Congrats! And yes the car has its own battery warming system.
If you park in the garage the engine requires less time to warm up so you can go to ev mode faster, and get better mileage.
@@212driller Clever!
Is it best to runs car for a few mins before driving off on a cold morning? You mention that hybrids have a warming system. Does it use petrol to heat the car if you turn on heating? In a Toyota Corolla for instance. Tnks so much.

Helpful. My EV car indicator only comes on when I release the accelerator. Should it come on more frequently? I keep the car in ECO Mode. Thanks
This is normal behavior of the car. It will be on at low speeds with light throttle and when no throttle input happens.
Thanks Brian I learned a lot from this my xle premium will be here this week.
You’re welcome!

Again another great video. I picked up my 2021 rav4 xle hybrid last Thursday and I love it. Do you think you can do a quick video on how to break it in? Toyota says it needs 600 miles to do so. Thank you again.
Thank you for your support! Congrats on the new car! What color!
I can tell you my recommend break in here: first 600 miles:
*try not to hard stop
*no heavy acceleration
*no long trips
*keep rpms 4K and under (mid range and under for hybrid)
*do not surpass 70mph
*allow for variation in rpms (all below 4K/mid range)
Hope that helps!

How about if the arrow on the screen move in opposite directions - from battery to engine? if it charging or using the battery?
In that case the battery is powering the car
Two questions. Are Toyota AWD hybrids faster since there is a second engine providing torque? (Im looking at an AWD Sienna hybrid) Does the battery capture regen energy faster with AWD since there are potentially two electric engines that are capable of providing power?
Great questions. Generally the hybrids are faster yes. The battery uses regen braking to recharge so both variants will reboot just as effectively. Enjoy!
Thanks! You mention the green car “EV” showing up - but what has to happen for it to show up? What did you do to know you were about to see the green EV car icon?
The green EV car comes on when the engine is off
But I actually have not yet figured out how to turn off the “engine” - for example (I’m assuming), to sit in the parked car, using the air con and listening to music. (I’m too lazy to consult the manual). Is that what you mean by “when engine is off”?

What's the difference between EV mode and ECO mode? It sounds like they do the same thing. Am about to buy a Camry, really appreciate your informative videos.
EV mode keeps engine off at low speeds, eco mode makes the throttle softer to promote less unnecessary fuel use.

Could you give a better explanation that what is out there.
for the B mode on Corolla.
B mode is for increasing your engine drag (engine braking) to help you slow down while coasting down a hill.
Can you review the Prius hybrid AWD 2024?
Thank you
Will do
You said that the hybrid system is lighter because there is no drive shaft. Two other videos said that the hybrid system is 400 pounds heavier. Because now there is 2 motors under the hood and a heavy battery pack under the vehicle. Yes you do get better gas mileage. But the hybrid is heavier.
Sure but what matters in the end when a Corolla ts consumes like a smal petrol car id say thats good Engineering
30% more range is advertised and it shows in my wallet as proof plus reliability is all i care about
My mistake! Thanks for correcting me.
I think hybrid 4x4 would be really useful out in the wilderness
Big time especially with less of a need for fuel.
Just ordered our hybrid camry
Congrats!
Thanks it helps I'm planning RAV4 hb
Did they change the location of the high voltage battery? newer models have it under the rear seat... right?
How does the AC get powered in hybrid RAV4 ??
Some new hybrids have battery under the car. AC is powered by hybrid battery

Or the battery will be short lived. wouldnt the constant on/off of the engine be a bad thing? in normal cars making short trips is bad for the cylinders
This ain’t no normal car! 😎
Thanks for the advice. I definitely will take this into consideration before making my decision.

1:19 to have a airconditioner?
I don’t recommend driving a car under 1/4 tank because it can cause strain on the pump
@@brianruperti yeah there is a reason there is a class action lawsuit out against Toyota. They need to put this issue to rest.

Not much more than 25mph
Crash course indeed. I’m new to the hybrid Toyota.
What is the max speed, on only EV MODE, that one can drive on?
