The Neutrik ConvertCON connectors are the world's first convertible XLR connector & you had some great questions about them. This video demonstrates how the ConvertCON stands up to typical abuse and wear that happens all the time on the job. Do they live up to the Neutrik reputation?

Regarding shear event, I always put the recommended amount of wire inside the XLR, or even few mm more, I never cut them as close as possible. Because that way I can push the cable in after soldering, the wires get a bit bent and this ensures that if ever, in any situation the strain relief slips or gives, the strain isn't immediately put to the delicate wires and solder contacts. Because it's not _if_ the strain relief gets tested, it's _when_ it get's tested :)

Awesome stuff! I'd be curious to see a similar test with speaker level connectors. I love the Speakon Soldering video you did before. Thanks for doing this for us!

Thanks Douglas! Are there connectors other than Speakon that you're thinking of, or just the different Speakon options? I know the knock off ones I've seen before can be pretty brittle, so maybe all of the generics up against the real thing? Let me know & thanks for watching!

I have a half dozen of these connectors for about 3 years now…Work well, fits and locks with a majority of connections. Great for broadcast tv IFBs and comms.

In fact mine will be on a job this weekend, and I also placed a few on my Cat Tail knock off units.

They're also pretty expensive... almost 15€ a pop ($16-$17) so they're truly not an every day connector, but specialty thing that you make converter cables our of to save the day. :)

For a connector that seems to be getting advertised more as a problem solver and not an everyday connector, it seems to be a great solution. The fact that it took you going to town on it with a hammer and a 2x4 to get them to break , and then just for the covering to come off, says a lot for the quality of the build. At the end of the day, you still had a working connector and were still able to convert it. It looked like it held up to what I think would be the more common snagged on something and just tugged on, with no issue. I certainly still hope to grab a few.
In reality, how many times did it take you hitting them for them to break?

    • @DcSoundOp
      @DcSoundOp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree 100% and have more on order myself to replace the ones I broke. It took a couple of really good smashes with the hammer to crack the first one and that one stayed mostly intact. The second one took a single hit with the 2x4 to shatter the sleeve, but it was a very worst case scenario of getting snagged while the cable is whipping around or something similarly hard.
Like you said, at the end of the day they both still work and would have made it through a job just fine. I like them a lot for what they were designed to do.

Many years back I got a couple ends to make some adapter cables with they were certainly expensive then. I made a stereo 3.5mm suming cable which can be used in reverse as an input recording cable with some loss which is probably good for loud output sources. I also made a 3.5mm mono to xlr cable. At the time they serve their purpose although they are very rarely used.

Do you still have them laying around? It would be cool to do a What's in Your Kit Adapter edition video! If anyone wants to send in a video of their adapter or turn-around kit, message info@dcsoundop.com for a link to upload to.

I think, it's a great solution. Absolutely not for all cables, but soldering a couple of cables with this connector could be a live saver in some situations.

@@DcSoundOp In my opinion it's better than using the male-female convertor plugs, because you have an extra connection between the cable and, my experience, "hey, I thought we had eight male-female convertor plugs, but I only can find five of them"

Great! What is the device playing the music that you use towards the end of the video when go back and forth between the two cables?

    • @DcSoundOp

That is the SoundBullet by sonnectaudio - I had David who created them on the channel about a year ago for a chat - th-cam.com/video/Cr7ebO-EYqk/w-d-xo.html - It can playback tone or pink-noise or whatever is plugged into it's input.
At the end of the video, the music source is from a computer, then -> dante network -> analog Avio output -> Sound Bullet.
You can order them direct from Sonnect at sonnectaudio.com/sound-bullet/ or through Rat Sound who has a few left in stock right now it looks like - www.ratsoundsales.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=sonnect-soundbullet - we don't make money on either of those links, but it's the tester I recommend and use the most.

Sidenote: what is that blue double ended box that you're using to play music from? as that looks interesting. Probably a video I haven't seen. One benefit of working myself to almost death at a job I shouldn't be doing is it I've made a bit of detail that I have invested into my equipment I need to make a video. I have gotten myself some cases no more tubs and miscellaneous equipment stacking combined studio hub with sound tools cat rack. I have done two things so far and set up has been 15 minutes for 2 - 4 Mic's 2x vocal 2x instrument, although definitely don't forget your now proprietary ethernet cables at home.

Hey Mark, the blue box is the Sound Bullet & there is indeed a video - th-cam.com/video/Cr7ebO-EYqk/w-d-xo.html - It's one of the tools I really use everyday & I don't make anything off recommending them. Here is their site- sonnectaudio.com/ (you can usually get them direct from SoundTools too in the U.S.)
