Orks are super fun, but depending on which type of army you want it can get expensive quickly.

If I was to recommend a build to a friend it would be to pick up the Maurader Strike Force from Mantic games, you can get it for around £60 and it comes with 30 boys (who can easily be customised to be Kommandos and Lottas), 4 mega armoured Nobles and a warboss. It also comes with an aircraft that could easily be used as a fighter bommer.
For the 500pt list I would have...
1 mega armoured warboss
4 Mega Armoured Novels
10 Shoota boys
10 Slugga boys
10 Kommandos.
For price you really can't beat it and all you giving up if official GW stores.
It's a great way to dip your toe into the game but not break the bank, the models are easier to build and paint too which is great for a newbie.
EBay bargains are Another option but it's very random...

Nice (and varied) lists! Do you have anything for Speed Freeks at 500 points?
Also, I saw your video for ideas on how to make Combat Patrol a little more fun/fair and one of the suggestions was keeping model Toughness below 8, and the point cost of any individual unit to 150 points. The Weird Boy list had a unit of 20 ork boyz clocking in at 190 points, would you say for the more horde-y armies that the rule could be stretched to there (or even 200 points) for what counts as the army's "light infantry" (I'm thinking of things like hordes of Hormagaunts, or even Intercessors that can, by the rules, actually exceed 150 point squad sizes). Or should one just even out the Ork Boy mobs out a bit (two units of 15) to get them under 150 points?

I did the combat patrol analysis videos after setting up some rules for my own casual 500 points games. I would probably change those big horde squads as you suggested. Especially for 500 points games, dividing fire is very important anyway, so it's a win win in my opinion.
As for speed freaks, depending on if you want to go full speed freaks, I'd go for a Deffkilla wartrike, 10 Boyz, 18 Gretchin, 3 Deffkoptas, 3 Warbikers. This gives you a good variety of units, decent amounts of ObSec, some punch with the Deffkoptas (One of my favorite Ork units in the current codex), and Warbikers are iconic and absolutely decent for 75 points. You could go all out and use the outrider detachment, but running 9 bikes instead of any troops sounds risky. It could be a fun list, though.

I think these lists should hold up perfectly fine. A few units like Boyz got a bit cheaper, so you might be able to squeeze a heavy weapon in there. Other then that, Orks only got better!

The monopose nature of the New Boyz (and their New Boy tiny widdle heads) and the Warboss in Mega Armor is the thing that kept me from the Combat Patrol. One can never have too many Deff Dreads though and the Deffkoptas (aside from the small ork heads again--it's like orks have been suffering from ork microcephaly since the Speed Freeks box set). All of this I know from experience. After the set came out I picked up a single set of the new boyz still on sprue on ebay for about $15 (and a Deff Dread for $20!).
