Whenever I get frustrated with my own guitar playing I put this album on to get inspired works every time. Just about the most expressive guitar player in the last 30 or so years .
not only is it genuinely inspiring, its also a very deep look into the mind of a heroin addicted musician. low key kinda sad tbh but its just so raw, which i love
Classic record, deserves more recognition. Has a unique wistful, despondent sound, prototypical of a lot of later 90s music. Much of it was written in 91 and 92 as well. A lot of darker, atmospheric albums of that era were down tempo or post rock, but Niandra was an experimental avant-garde fusion of classic rock, soul&funk, and punk. Hard to define what it is, but it’s a special masterpiece in its own right, the quintessential quarter life crisis album. I’ve listened to a few thousand records, and nothing comes close to capturing sadness and detachment quite like it. His guitar actually weeps, reminisces and evokes more emotion than even John who is practically wailing on the album. Amazing work of art, I always return to this album.
Niandra is my favorite album and I'm kind of sad that John sees it like "sad sounding". I've always listened to it and felt like I was being comforted by a friend. Those songs felt like the only ground I could step without being judged by other people when I felt really lonely on this world.
i agree with you here, plus it inspires me as a musician to just go for it, and write using the same stream-of-consciousness style that Niandra is well known for, i love it. one of my favorite albums of all time, if not THE.
@@guillermovandening2503 actually, probably not the worst, as it was recorded prior to him really getting into heroin, which I imagine would've been the worst period in his life. @@СашаТихомирова-с3ь John and River were really close and River was one of the few friends john had after he left the band. They used to play together at John's place quite often and they also recorded some songs, some of those ended up on John's second LP (Smiles From The Streets You Hold). Btw, I think Bob Forrest talks about their relationship on his book.
@@RedHotBSSM yeah, I was going to read that book. thanks! it's really nice to know that they were good friends, because I love them both very much but there are no photos of them together and not so much information. what do you think about that theory that John was the one who gave that drink to River which was fatal for him? 0:14 how does he pronunce LaDes? he swallows it so i cant figure out. I always pronunced it Laids but I guess it is Lah-des. Any native speaker would like to shed some light?
He is extremely talented but his isolation in addiction to a hard drug showed a side to him that exposed his abilities and drained part of his humaness. I am thinking this picture represents the sentiment of discovering what others thought of him. His talents and gifts were never going to just disappear because he was physically ailing both inside and outside.
Only an extremely sheltered, unadventurous, boring, rock radio listening, lame, sad, middle of the road type person could possibly call hip hop a 'strange genre'. I feel sorry for you. Techno probably makes you shit your pants, literally.

It's so unique- I try and I try, but I can't find anything that even comes close to having the kind of emotion in this album does.
