    I visited the Pantheon in May. It was spectacular. It was free but I would gladly pay an entrance fee to keep this world treasure maintained for another two thousand years.

      It is spectacular, and I agree with you!

    • @MMijdus
      @MMijdus ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree too. It is for the largest part still in the state as emperor Hadrian had it build around 125 AD! Except that the statues are replaced. But all the marble decorations stem from Roman time. A unique monument from Antiquity. ❤

      Well a lot was pilfered, in particular under Pope Urban VIII. But yes, the fact that it was converted to a church saved it from being totally destroyed! @@MMijdus

    I’m a man and was planning on wearing pants, but I couldn’t help notice many bare shoulders and even more knees(mostly men). Seems they are not strict about this. I wonder if this is true for Vatican Museum as well?

    • @simonedmonds3141
      @simonedmonds3141 ปีที่แล้ว

      There last week. Went to Pantheon and did a guided tour of Vatican. I wore shorts on both occasions, not really short, just above the knee. It was incredibly hot.

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  ปีที่แล้ว

      @jayholland3768 The Vatican does have a strict dress code, although it does not apply to the museums at all, except for when you enter the Sistine Chapel. The dress code also applies to Saint Peter's basilica. The dress code is more enforced at the Vatican because they have the staff to enforce it.
      At the Pantheon, which is also a church and which also has a dress code, they just don't have the staff to enforce it the way the Vatican does. So people are told to cover up to enter, and then often, once inside they remove those coverups.

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  ปีที่แล้ว

      @simonedmonds3141 Usually, shorts that are just above the knee seem to be ok.

  • @evgeny_web
    @evgeny_web ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I can see quite many people on the video not covering their knees, for example a woman at 7:32 How do they get in? :)

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In Italy, the general rule for visiting churches or any holy site is to have covered knees and covered shoulders. However, not all churches have the amount of staff they have at the Vatican and so sometimes they can only do so much.
      For the most part, the staff at the front seem mostly concerned with making people cover their shoulders.
      So I see people going in with covered shoulders and then removing that cover once inside. It's basically on an honor system. They just don't have the staff to walk around ask ask people to cover back up.

    Great video as always. Looks like I just missed you. We tried to buy tix online (on a pc) for Sat (when you were there) and wouldnt accept my credit card. PayPal was NOT an option on the site unfortunately. So, we went Sat afternoon to try again. I scanned the QR code at the entrance which took me to the same govt website which, again, wouldnt accept my visa and no paypal option. The payment issue was REALLY frustrating and there were dozens of people near me cussing at their phones as they had the same problem. So, at 5pm we decided to stand in the blazing sun to pay CASH for tix. After 15 mins in line we were told it was too late and they closed the line due to high volume of visitors ahead of us (they close at 630pm). Since we only had one more day I bit the bullet and paid 45 Euros (x3) for a skip the line guided tour the next day (today). Frankly, your videos were more informative than the guide and it was a waste of money but the Pantheon itself is amazing. I'm sure they'll get it sorted out soon, but it was very frustrating. PS - we had other bookings every morning so that messed us up. Follow Elyssa's advise and GET THERE EARLY!

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for sharing your experience! I'm sorry it was so frustrating and difficult. I know many people have been through similar experiences with this new system. The PayPal option isn't evident because when you reach the payment page, it's in Italian, so you'd have to know that the third option is "altri metodi" which means other methods and when you click that, it does take you to the page where you can pay with PayPal. I even showed this in this video because I know it's not clear especially if you don't speak Italian.
      Anyway I am glad you got to see the Pantheon. Thank you for your kind words. I am grateful to you for watching my videos and for taking the time to comment and to let me know you find my content helpful!

    Just got back from Italy and Rome for 5 nights. The Pantheon was by far the most confusing place to enter. None of the employees seemed to know which line was for what. We were directed to one line, got to the front, and then said we were in the wrong line. Infuriating.

      Same here. There on Weds 12th July. We pre purchased tickets with audio guide, as that was all I could see on the website. Got there early, 3 queues formed, got to the end of our queue only to be told it was the wrong one🤦‍♂️. Finally got in to be told our audio guide tickets didn't include entry. After some bickering we managed to get a refund on those tickets and pay the 5 Euro entry fee. A real lack of information outside.

    5 € is nothing for what you get, visiting that amazing monument.
    Imagine you travel around the world to see Rome, stay a week or two (recommended, IMHO) and then go cheap on the Pantheon?! Even if one comes only for the great food, some spots are just a must.

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  ปีที่แล้ว

      I must agree! I think it's a bargain for what you get to see and experience inside!

    • @archaeoraptor6140
      @archaeoraptor6140 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You're right that 5€ isn't much compared to the value of seeing the Pantheon. But here's the thing: It was completely free before.
      You could walk in and out on a whim, no long lines, no crowds. It felt much more accessible. Now with the fee, you’re not just paying 5€, you're paying for the experience of waiting in line, dealing with crowds, and losing that spontaneity that made it special. And about the upkeep - if the Italian state is having trouble with costs, they should be asking the Catholic Church, one of the wealthiest institutions in the world, for help. After all, it’s their church!
      It’s not about the 5€, it’s about what used to be a free, easy, and more peaceful experience now turning into another ticketed attraction with all the hassle that comes with it.

    • @ralfjansen9118
      @ralfjansen9118 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@archaeoraptor6140 Of course... plus, it is a church and should be free anyways.
      When I was there a few years ago, it still still was free, but you had to wait anyways, because of the security checks (you find them now at all big sites in Rome) - and they let in only a limited number of people.
      But what I said is: I would not want to miss the Pantheon anyways.

      If you booked just an audio guide, that is not enough to get you entrance. If you booked a guided tour with a tour company, then your entrance is included. So if you only paid for the audio guide, you will need to get an entry ticket, as I described in the video.

      Yes, that's true, in my video you will see people dressed for summer and in what the Pantheon guards would consider to be in appropriate. However, unlike at the Vatican, the Pantheon and many other churches around Rome simply do not have the staff to be able to go around and make sure people are following the rules. So men cannot be in shorts? I saw some men in line in shorts in this video so just want to double check

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well....technically, no bare knees or shoulders are allowed in churches. However,
      1) In very hot weather, it seems most of the time people can wear shorts or skirts that come to just above the knee and it's fine.
      2) Inside the Pantheon, there is nobody to police this, so very often, people will go inside covered up and then remove their covering once inside and nobody stops them.
      At the Vatican, it can be more strict but it can depend on the guard who sees you going in. But also at the Vatican, there are a lot of guards, including inside, who make sure people stay covered, but even there, I notice that most of the time men seem fine wearing knee-length shorts. On the other hand, I cannot guarantee this and I have heard of people being turned away.
      The Pantheon is also a church but as I say, like many churches in Rome, there are not enough people to check this.
      The bottom line is that the rule is that to enter any holy site in Italy, including catacombs, mosques, synagogues, etc, you should have covered knees, shoulders, and midriffs. And if you don't, then you run a small risk of being turned away.

      There is no way to reserve for the Pentecost inside the Pantheon, unless you know some clergy who work there. For those wanting to attend Mass, you'll need to get there that morning by about 7AM. By 8AM the queue will already be extremely long. Space is limited so they won't allow everyone in. This has become an extremely hot thing to do since it's been well-publicized on social media for the past several years. Most people come for the rose petals and the only way to see that is to attend Mass. And the only way to attend Mass is to come and wait in line.

    I can't speak for the Pantheon website, but I did have problems with my Chase Visa when I bought tix to the Vatican a few months ago; it was a problem on the Visa side (they assumed fraud), which I was able to quickly fix and get what I was trying to purchase. Since then I haven't had trouble buying European tours and such.

    Visited today. Purchased guided 1 hour tour with a Brit named Anthony. Next time, i would just stand in line with audio guide since the tour was maybe 30minutes inside and 30 minutes outside. Cost $80 for 2 people, used whisperers and size of group 20 people.
    By the way what is the piping system for all the underground spring water? So nice and refrshing.

      I'm glad you were able to visit. Yes, their audioguide is quite good.
      The water in Rome comes from the mountains over the aqueducts - yes the same aqueducts used in Ancient Rome (almost).
      You can learn more about this here: th-cam.com/video/Q_Uz6OA000g/w-d-xo.html
      The drains inside the Pantheon are the same ones used when it was originally built.

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for telling me you find my video useful. I hope you will have a wonderful time when you visit Rome this August.
      As for the way people are dressed: Basically the rules are that in any church or other holy site (churches, mosques, synagogues, catacombs, etc), visitors are required to dress modestly which means having covered knees and covered shoulders.
      For the most part I have seen that people wearing shorts or dresses that come to just above the knee are being allowed in to churches where there is someone checking this, including at Saint Peter's basilica. However, it is not always the case as this depends on the person doing the checking.
      To be absolutely sure you will not be turned away, I would recommend wearing something that covers your shoulders (even a scarf you can use just temporarily), and having covered knees. Lightweight linen pants or a long skirt are a great option and also protect your legs from the heat and sun.
      So that is the rule. Then, you will find that many people choose to flout this rule if they think they can "get away with it", meaning, in the case of the Pantheon, that once inside, they might remove whatever they were using to cover up. This is because there are not enough staff to stay on top of this as there are at the Vatican. So the rule is what it is, and then there are those who choose to go against the rules and they can often do so if there are not enough people to let them know they have to stay covered up while inside.
      Debate about this can get very heated, but I am just here to tell you what I have seen over the years.

      They are not allowed to enter the Pantheon dressed that way, but once inside, people often remove whatever they were using to cover their shoulders, and there are probably not enough staff to check this.

      You certainly can attend mass but this would not be a way to visit the monument - during mass, the Pantheon is closed to visitors.
      There are two times I know of that you might not be able to get in for Mass if you don't come super early - on Christmas Eve and on the Pentecost. Otherwise, you should be able to show up for Mass and attend without any trouble.
      Thanks for watching and for your kind comments!

    In my opinion the best option is not to buy in advance. There is (to the right) most of the time no line, most people do not know this: you pay in cash (or with your card) there and you can get in most of the time much faster than people who have online tickets :-) The line often is short that you do not see it. If you have a teacher's licence or similar you get discount.

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The line on the right is for credit card payment and the line on the left is for cash payment. I have heard recently that the cash line is pretty quick so that's great for people who don't want to book in advance.
      I still book in advance, even moments prior, and just walk right up to the middle line and there's nobody there so I find it the fastest for me.
      Thanks for sharing your experience and your tips!

    Will be visiting the Pantheon even with the charge. It's not too expensive and if it helps to pay towards the upkeep of the building, I don't think this is too much to ask. Your video has useful information about how to buy tickets which is great! I'll definitely be buying them online. Btw, I have been reading your blog, which has also been really useful.
    I notice that you mention in one of your other videos that the short cut is available for St Peter's Basilica from the Vatican Museums. I have booked an official guided tour of the museums and not the Basilica, is it still the case that you can only do the short cut if your tour includes the Basilica? Many thanks for your videos, I'm really enjoying watching them.

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I'm glad you find my video useful.
      Thank you also for reading my website. Just so you know, as of August 17, 2023, they changed the rules at the Vatican museums once again and it is NO LONGER possible to take the shortcut from the Sistine Chapel to Saint Peter's Basilica unless you are on a tour.
      And even if you are on a tour, that tour's description must include a visit to the basilica or you will also not be able to take the shortcut.
      So it sounds like the tour you booked doesn't include the basilica and you will have to go back to the exit of the Vatican Museums (same place you entered) and walk all the way around the walls to Saint Peter's Square.

The basilica is free so all you have to do is visit it, go inside, and make your way to the front. It's really special. I also recommend you visit the cloister, and do NOT miss the nearby Abbey of the Three Fountains where Saint Paul met his fate. The 3 fountains are said to have sprung up where his head hit the ground in 3 spots. It's a truly special place to visit.

    Great video! Question! When you buy your ticket, the time indicated is the timeframe to ENTER the place, right? E.g., if I buy a ticket for 6:00-6:30, I need to be in line any time between 6:00 and 6:30 pm, correct?

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks a lot for your kind comments! I'm glad you like the video. The timeframe is for a whole hour. If you have a 6pm - 7pm entry, you could arrive any time within that timeframe.
      I would imagine they are fairly flex if you were to arrive a few minutes before 6pm. Actually last entry is 6:45 pm so with that entry time, you would in fact be restricted to coming between 6pm and 6:45pm.
      If you have a ticket, trust me you will have almost no wait in line. They are just scanning the QR code and you're in. Have a great visit!

      @@Romewise Amazing, once again Elyssa! This was the exact same question I had. Could I enter at any time during the time-slot or would I need to show up at the beginning of the time slot? Searched everywhere with no results. I should have known better. Checked your video about the Pantheon, et voilá. Your videos of Rome have to be the best there are. Lots of attention to detail. And, your love for the city and your viewers oozes from every video. Thanks a ton!

    Where do Roman residents go in?

    • @Romewise
      @Romewise  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Tiffany, you just go on the website museitialiani.it and create a login. Then book yourself a free ticket. Then you go in the middle line which is for people with tickets. They might ask to see some ID to show you are a Rome resident. I once showed my Carta D'Identità and the person said, well this doesn't show you are a resident of ROME but then she saw my MiC card in my wallet and said, oh ok you have a MiC card.... 😂

    I booked tickets through the Basilica website and it says in the tickets: The tour includes a free to the Pantheon. If this is NOT the entry ticket, then should i buy the one from museitaliani? Thank you for the video.

      it's a bit of a hassle then to buy entry tickets from a separate website and the audioguide from another 🙄

      The church website only sells audioguides and tours. They don't sell entry tickets, so yes, you'll need to go to the museiitaliani site.

      Yes, first of all, I filmed it in summer which is when the new fees began. Second of all, while there is a dress code, the Pantheon, unlike the Vatican, does not have enough staff to enforce it inside.
