Don't forget that for local trains or non high speed trains, you will need to "convalidare" your paper ticket in the little yellow or green machine before boarding the train.

Haha I was going to say that too. We were in Italy for a family emergency so all this figuring out stuff was on the fly
recently is not longer mandatory because the tiket is valid only for that specific train so if u forget it is not a big deal... but anyway do it, you never know
Actually, it depends. You can ask at the ticket office for an "open ticket" you can validate any platform, and lets you ride any train as long as it stops at the chosen destination. Otherwise, you can choose for a specific reason, which ticket doesn't have to be validated.

An addition I'd like to make when it comes to checking your platform: Big train stations will have platforms numbered for example 1 to 15, BUT in addition they can have platforms 1 OVEST, 2 OVEST etc. or 1 EST, 2 EST etc., which means 1 WEST or 1 EAST and these are completely separate platforms to platform 1. This is something I personally fell for once, but never again :)

Another addìtion: at some stations you can find "binario tronco": for example 1 T, 2 T, but it isn't very frequent.
@@valeriavisconti1281 Yes, for example the Mantova station has binario 1T, for the connection between Mantova and Verona.
And then you might also have SOTTERRANEO (underground)

As an italian I can tell you that the high-speed line it’s the better way to move around major cities: it’s fast, way more flexible hours than the plane (there are around 10 journey every day across major cities), no issues with the luggage (no weight, size or unit limits) and you can easily reach the city center of every city.
TIP: mind to book them early (at least 20-30 days earlier, the earlier the better) to get bargain prices. If you buy tickets couple days before the price will be significantly higher (from 29€ if booked 20 days earlier to 120€ if booked couple days earlier)
yeah, gets you right into the center of the cities unlike planes

Yea well learn a little Italian so that you can show the people a some respect. I know as an American our language doesn't matter to the hoards that invade it everyday, but in Italian knowing a few words, and sentences go a long way in the locals in helping you order a meal, find the bathroom get on the right train etc. Enjoy your trip Italy is by far the greatest place my wife and I have ever visited. Oh and if you want some great pastry the pasticceria pastry shop in Italian right behind the station in Florence is beyond great, arrivederci.

I visited Porta Nuova station in Torino; it was magnificent: organized, clean, and pleasant. There’s nothing similar in Romania, unfortunately. 🚄🇮🇹

Rode Italian trains in Sicily and from Rome to Bologna and back. WONDERFUL experience. No issues. Bought the tickets from the person behind the desk, not the machines, as it was my first time.

Well done - just about all the critical info clearly presented in a few minutes. I probably studied Rick Steves for an hour to learn as much, back in 2000, when ticket machines were considered cutting edge tech and nobody had smartphones.

Ciao! I rode my first European train in 1974, traveling from Salzburg where I was studying, to various destinations. It was easy back then and even easier today. In Italy, the trains run from city centers, with stops in between, to city centers. Check the frequency from your departure to your destination online, arrive at least 20 minutes before, go to a vending machine, select your preferred language, buy a ticket, for local travel validate it in a tiny box that stamps the time etc on it, and go to the platform and get on or wait till it arrives. Trains move fast. It may depart in a couple minutes. It will be comfortable safe traveling. Renting a car is silly if staying in Italy unless you cannot walk or plan on staying at a resort not in the city. I have been all over the world, Europe and Italy. Traveling by train and day excursions are comfortable and fun.
Another great video Gregor. We used the high speed train to go from Naples to Rome and business class was brilliant. We will be using the train next July when we are in Rome to go to Florence for the day so your tips and advice will be really helpful, thanks

Hope you have also seen the rusty older trains that have doors that don't open, trains covered in graffiti, Stations that need a good face-lift - -all in all Europe has prettier, cleaner railways than Italy has

Just got back from Europe specifically Italy. Thanks to your channel. I was able to survive the train ride...ha ha ha. Would be easier next time I go back there. Roma Termini is soooo busy and huge, but was able to find the platform # easily. Other train stations are easy to navigate! Trenitalia app is easy. I also tried to use the Biglettia machine with ease on some stations too. So, quite an experience for someone who's not familiar with European train system because we usually don't use train in the USA. Your video helped me. I watched it a few times before I embark on my trip. It's a great help and saver!

Great video & spot on with the information. One extra bit though is when travelling from Rome Termini be aware that there are more platforms than the those on the main concourse. We assumed that "platform 2 est" was showing the departure time was 'estimated' as ... but it was actually "platform 2 east". There are more platforms on the east side of the station with the same numbering starting from 1 to 5 (I think). We nearly missed our train departure but for a local who noticed that we looked anxious as our train was due to depart & it was not on platform 2. He then told us about the other platforms. And yes we did catch the train as I can whistle very loudly and the conductor held the train for us as it was moving out, very considerate.
This is why it's always important to give yourself at least 10 extra minutes to sort things out and yeah the Italians are always super helpful if you look like you need help or if you ask around for help but I'm glad that you got to where you needed to go
Good advices! Funny about the last minute change of platform, it is really true! About the app, it works really well, you can check when the train you are expecting is coming, that way you can stop running in a change.

I want to know if these apps provided by the train company tell you when your train is coming so that you don't have to be looking up at a board constantly (and also if they'll alert you to changes in train platforms.)
@@Neville60001 Once you know your train number (from your ticket), you can follow it up from the app, tha app tells you where it is at any moment, what platform it is arriving, the app is very intuitive, you'll find the info quickly.

From Paris you can take the FRECCIAROSSA High-Speed train from Paris Gare de Lyon to TORINO or MILANO Central Station (it takes around 5-6 hours). From both TORINO and MILANO you can then take other high speed trains throughout the country

PRO tip on Regional/REG Trains (local trains, the slow ones) you can buy the tiket on the train BUT you have to pay 5€ more and it's better if you actively find the tiket inspector inside the train and don't wait for him, otherwise he thinks you are trying to not paying it. it is useful in emergency situations.

Whilst it is indeed correct to say that in larger cities in Italy there is a main station is often not guaranteed that trains will even serve a main station. For instance in Florence there are some trains that serve either Rifredi or Campo di Marte Stations, whilst in Milan there are other cases of long distance trains bypassing Milan Centrale or terminating at Porta Garibaldi
In Florence the major trains go to SM Novella. Same for Rome. Milan it's 50 50 with centrale and Garibaldi.
Thank you on this video since I'm planning going to Naples :D Ps. It's common thing to serve beverages and coffee in better trains, even in Serbia (at least in train that goes up to 200km/h. And it's cheap ticket is like 4€). If you have time come to Belgrade (you have cheap wizz air flights from 15€, from Rome to Belgrade).
I took an Italo train from Naples to Rome Termini earlier this month and was surprised how busy it was on a Monday afternoon. I think all seats were taken, at least in my coach and I noticed how few seats were available throughout the train when I booked. And it was cheap as well, a lot cheaper than expected and what I would pay on the UK rail network.
Yeah. Good prices. UK is expensive!

@@nathaly759 I am sure you can book on the day or just go to the station and buy your tickets, however I would prebook to ensure you get a seat. I booked online about 2 weeks prior to travel and there were very few of the cheaper seats left and only a handful of seats in each carriage. I have to say that I paid just over €10 for the single journey. There are regional slow trains, as well as two fast train companies, Italo and Trenitalia and plenty of trains throughout the day.
