This was her first album as St Vincent, and yet I'm so baffled by how musically adept it already was. You'd expect someone to be just figuring things out in the beginning, not rly an expert at songwriting or playing, but listen to this!!! It is a masterpiece!!! From the guitar to the thoughtful lyrics to the interesting harmonies, this sing is so wonderful, and it just goes to show that she has spent a whole lot of time and hard work to refine her amazing talents.
"we'll do what Joseph and Mary did... (without the kid)"... now that is a fantastic lyric. What a beautiful and stunning song... I only stumbled upon this great gem searching through Sufjan Stevens clips. My Lord! There are some incredibly talented people in the world. This is heavenly to listen to. Now I'm off to Itunes (again) to spend more food n rent money legally purchasing St Vincent's music. God bless u. Alex
Oh my god. I like her acoustic performances so much more than the studio songs. The only thing I never liked about her music was that pretty much every song wound up sounding over done for my tastes but the acoustics aren't able to get overwhelming like the studio songs.
Funnily enough, I think her acoustic days were the most cynical days of her music. All of that soothing sounds actually satire the pretentiousness of academic art. For instance, she's manipulating with John in this song without him even noticing. I like something more straightforward and authentic like Cheerleader where she finally stood up instead of playing around.
better than album version. Most songs are better acoustic, of her. Dont know why but this song reminds me of Damien Rice song Cold Water. Both great songs.
Question: has anyone heard anything about who/what this song is about? I guess the obvious answer is it's about her, and maybe her part-time thinking on the subject. Still I feel like there might be some kind of literary reference in there, and I read some people saying on another website it's about a character on Arrested Development, which I haven't watched much, so I was just wondering if anyone had any substantial explanations to offer.
Dear Annie Clark, I know Covids messed with live music and all, but if you need a new beer drinker/hand percussionist, I'm your guy. I'm pretty much down with anything alcoholic (no malt liquor please), and I have my own gear.

If you listen to the song she actually doesn't love John. Shes using him emotionally, sexually(doesn't sound that bad ;D) and for the benefit of feeling safe.
This Annie Clark character is going to produce some of the very best musical creations of the early 21st century.
good call
Best prediction ever

Addie Joy Mitchell she goes way back
She played lead guitar for the Polyphonic spree iirc. If you know them, you know that's a big technical ask.
