love this video! it's a great introduction to non-fans and provides a clear understanding of the group! glad you cleared the air about the graduation system as i think that's one of the things a lot of non-fans misunderstand. would looooove to see you make a similar one about 46G because there is also a lot there and see you explain their rivalry with 48G!!! great work!
i think nct is probably more confusing though? at least when your an akb fan you kinda know what to expect. i don’t even think SM knows what they are going to be doing with NCT in a years time.

The team shuffles are so emotional because some of these girls in their teams are very close, especially because they perform together so much. Some of them have been together for years and years at performances, concerts, handshake events and more.
@@michirusteabreak4724 true! plus the fact that it doesn't happen that often, so it probably leaves big impact. i'm wondering how the upcoming team shuffle will be, considering how long it took bc of covid and the NGT scandal...
It is normally not that emotional if it is only a team switch within a group. If I remember it right, the super dramatic scene of Jyurina was due to the bad announcement order. She was only arranged to co-participate in Team K, beside her original team S, but the management announced Team K first without mentioning Team S, so she thought she was completely relocated to AKB from SKE. Consider her age, the fact of leaving all her familiar members in SKE, and the distance between Tokyo and Nagoya, it is actually understandable.
@@ichigaikento exactly, depends on the member really. Some seem to find it more difficult than others. don't blame them, seeing you have to spend your time with people you might not know that well ;p
Actually the members can voluntary join another sister group like Haruka Nakagawa who moved from AKB 48 to JKT 48 in 2011-2012 so it's not always bad. She said if the producer actually offered her to move to learn new culture and new oppurtunitty. Now she is one of the popular TV person in Indonesia. Even when she graduated in 2016 she choose to graduate as JKT 48 member.
AKB48 really isn’t just a music group but a cultural phenomenon. Name me another group has their own dramas, manga, anime, games, musicals, theaters, documentary films, international associated groups, and so many more
@@afiqahhasbullah9441 Because of many problems in Japanese society. Japanese girls are sexually exploited from an early age, the huge patriarchal system and the treatment of women as second-class citizens because of toxic social issues.
Just so you know, Morning Musume had all of that -- LITERALLY every single one of that-- during their golden years. Same as AKB during their own golden years.
It's true miichan shaved her head completely on her own accord, her fellow members sometimes later on even joke about it or make light of it. To this day, she actually is embarrassed for what she did and thinks she reacted too dramatically and dislikes that it was blown up to the extent it did. I wish you could have discussed the dating scandal case of Sashihara Rino, who got into a big sex scandal, and was transferred to HKT48. This did not stop her, and she utilized this as a way to become a leader and mentor to the new group, helping her to end up becoming one of the THE most popular members (she ranked #1 in SSK multiple times!) and through that realized her love of producing and managing idol groups, leading her to create her own group =LOVE! I feel this shows that in the end, often times these 'dating scandal's dont define you.
also miichan has stated before, the management weren't upset about the dating scandal, they were mad because she saved her head and made a big deal out of it. But the members now take it very lightheartedly, and sometimes joke around about it. She even had a whole photoshoot with her wig :P
Another important thing, following backlash, they do not do gravure of members under 18 anymore (thank god). it was never something that was forced, but definitely a big part of being an idol in Japan for multiple groups (Hello!Project, etc) sadly :(
I don't think you're correct about no backlash. Recently NMB48 member yokono sumire was caught dating, and the fans had a huge backlash. She didn't participate in any events for a few months and it's recently announced that she is leaving the group (not a graduation, more like fired. Instead of 卒業 it's 辭退) Miichan said multiple times that she shaved her head because she was so afraid that she will have to leave the group, and the best way to apologize she can think of is to shave off her hair. Sahsi, Miichan and Yukirin all still received some sort of backlash from the fandom (at least in east asia), I still see people leaving mean comments about their dating scandals. They survived because 1. They had a bigger fanbase then most members and 2. They did so much for the group after the scandal some fans think they "made up for their mistakes". These are all popular opinions in the mandarin fandom, I have to say that Asia is not moving forward as much as you think. Sorry for the essay
@@HiyuSometimesClips I feel the suuchan case was a little different, because she was caught dating multiple people at the same time which blew up so much and she was the new NMB ace. from wota sites I've translated and read that are frequented by 48g jp fans, it appears the management wanted her to stay !! But the backlash from wotas was too much/it was hard for her to stay personally -- which is more what I meant with my posts. Some wotas will be terrible, and that can be seen often in kpop/etc too when an idol starts dating they get huge backlash (look at EXO chen fans) But sometimes they can be surprisingly supportive (When riripon announced her marriage, lots of them wanted to chip in their own money to pay for the wedding! :P) As for miichan, she has said multiple times she wants to forge the entire incident, and most of the members joke about it often now with miichan herself having said she was being dramatic and regrets it. I realize they all received some backlash from hardcore wota fans, I'm more talking about management here who tend to brush things under the rug more and don't 'kick people out'. Basically it more has to do with FANS response (which is not under the management's control) rather than management themselves.
the team shuffles are like suddenly changing classes for middle and high school girls without warning. the girls are upset about being separated from their friends and being sent to be with new people.
The most funniest and nerve wrecking moment is when you're peacefully watching their concert and then suddenly that old man in tuxedo will come out of nowhere and will say '~~48 group, Team shuffle'
AKB48 is such a bittersweet memory since I became a fan during the first generation and have so many wonderful memories. I was so devastated when the last of my favorite members graduated that I haven't been able to enjoy any new music from them since then. It's not the same when you have no idea who any of the new girls are and are afraid to form attachments because you know they will leave someday.
ikr...with Miichan, the last member from 1st generation graduating i would say I'm kinda lost rn...but there still some og member than I know but the feeling isn't the same

AKB48 just announced their 58th single and is to be released in late-2021! This single will be an AKB48-only senbatsu, meaning no sister group member is participating probably due to the hassle travelling between cities members would need to do. Chance no Junban, AKB48's first Rock-Paper-Scissors single, which is released in 2010 is their recent single to be released with an AKB48-only senbatsu

I want to add that there's a whole different 48 world in China. They used to be official sister groups, but they decided to cut their ties with the Japanese world. Some girls are really talented and they produced some iconic songs, but it's a whole different story and I totally understand that you decided to leave this out of your video.
@Mario Rossi - The core most thing to mention about SNH48 in relation to its origin as a 48 sister group is how much AKB48's 2nd Generation member Miyazawa Sae wanted to be a major part of it. She was extremely upset with how much trouble there was getting her visa going and how limited an amount of activities she was able to do with SHN48 as a result. Suzuki Mariya who also was transferred over there, not so much. Sae even refused to just go back to Team K and requested to be moved to another Japan based 48 group if they couldn't send her overseas, ultimately landing in SKE48.
Thank you so much for making this video!!! I’m a longtime AKB fan, and I’m so grateful you took the time to compile all this information. It’s so thorough and helpful, and I hope it helps kpop fans understand more about the world of 48g. I like how you mentioned that some AKB members just see it as a part-time job and/or a fun life experience. That, plus the fact that they get paid, makes it feel much more lowkey. I’ve always liked that about 48g. They really feel like “everyday girls” in a charming way!
I'm sooo happy to see so many long time 48 fans here! I was also very impressed and happy with this video after 12 years of being a fan of the 48 girls ♥ So many kpop fans have such a wrong idea about them. I hope this opens a lot of people's eyes ♥
note on minegishi minami's apology: she was not forced to shave her head, she shaved it herself. management forced her to cover it up with a wig in the following months. she also implied recently that she don't want to talk to about the shaved head anymore.
Thank you for speaking so in depth and respectfully about the core of 48 Family, AKB48 ♥ 🌟 I'm 27 and I've been a jpop fan since I was a teenager, before I listened to kpop. The way I see kpop fans talking about 48 Family sometimes is so disrespectful and rude, even though AKB has been the most popular girl group for decades and jpop created "idols" and introduced it to East Asia 30 years ago. So many young kpop fans have no idea about the history and act with such disrespect. I'm so glad to see AKB48 being treated with the respect they've always deserved.
same tho...I started with JPop since primary school and before, I didn't have many friends that I could talk about Jpop too since they are into Kpop. what hurts me more is that they even talking trash about Jpop just because it's not up to their taste in music but its okay rn cuz they've slowly gotten into Jpop>
19:19 I remember this! actually it's a little dramatic, but if you know the reason, you will definitely be surprised too. Jurina was ske48's ace, she was the center of ske and ske's 1st gen. During the shuffle announcement, they thought jurina would move out permanently. Even though she was very young at that time, she was one of the most respected members among the 48G members. Apart from that, even though they are one as 48G family, there is a rivalry that is, although not so striking, between akb and ske. So the shuffle announcement was of course very surprising to all the members. It's like moving f (x) 's Krystal to SNSD 😂😅
I think it's was one of the moment, on camera, where Renachan shown what she feel about Jurina as a members. Renachan has always been awkward with Jurina due to the different in their age, personality and the fact that management put them together (and the fact that fans and even member are shipping them together)
I’m not a Jpop fan but I’m really interested in learning about 48G system and such. Especially in their “golden era” in my country ( about 10 years ago I think ). It’s obviously interesting enough for Mnet to make a whole survival show inspired by it lol, and the NCT system too
The Maho case caused a ton of fans, and especially a lot of international fans, to pretty much pretend ngt doesnt exist and refuse to give them any money or promotion. I've been happy to find most of the 48g fans understand how awful it was
Also one thing i do really appreciate about 48G is that good or bad, the girls are often allowed to speak their minds and develop their own personalities and goals. My now graduated Kami-oshi's entire schtick was that she was a super unfriendly person, a mediocre performer and hated a lot of fans for going too far and being weird and that was exactly what ended up making her popular XD
The way I legit forgot they exist lmao they really need to disband already and maybe transfer some of the (good) girls to other groups 😭 if the sales are any indications they won’t bounced back again so why bother lol
@@handyhandyman The thing is, their last single still reached 100k sales. Like..This one we consider a "flop" in 48g, but if we compare it to any other jpop groups?.. Istg ngt "fans" are insane ...
48G is a titanic arena of healthy competition. The members are told they are all one another's rivals. You can see that in the legendary rivalries and double centers (Acchan vs Yuko, Mayuyu vs Sasshi, Jurina vs Rena, Milky vs Sayanee, Haruppi vs Sakura, Yuiyui vs Moeka). In one of the most iconic SSK speeches of all time, Mariko challenged the junior members to "come at us like you're going to crush us." When Team K (AKB48 2nd generation) was first formed and introduced to the original Team A (1st generation), they instantly viewed the other as rivals. Takamina later confessed to Yuko that when she saw her, she thought she couldn't beat her. On the other hand, Yuko always said that her and Takamina aren't friends but comrades. As far as her same generation (douki)/teammates, she named Akimoto Sayaka as both one of her best friends and rivals at the same time. During the early years of the group, Acchan said many of the other girls didn't like the fact that she was center. Despite that, altogether, they talked about working hard as pioneers so that their juniors can have a place where they can safely achieve their dreams. For Manatsu no Sounds Good, Haruppi was selected to be HKT48's sole representative, marking their debut in an AKB A-Side. However, she made a lot of mistakes, and apologized to everyone on her return to Hakata while crying, but nobody comforted her, nobody even spoke or moved. She knew everybody was thinking why was she center when they were better. Nevertheless, on HKT's documentary, all the 1st generation members said nobody had any complaints on Haruppi being the group's center as they fully acknowledged the reasons why as early as when they initially saw her at the auditions. Mayuyu is still the only original ace of a generation to both remain as such until graduation and become AKB's center (singles-wise and in title). Her douki, Love-tan was really persistent to take center, and so she confessed there were many conflicts between them when Team B was starting out. They're still good friends to this day. Even when Nogizaka46 debuted as AKB's official rival group, she expressed she wants them to push each other forward with their good-natured rivalry. There are many interviews and features of the members talking about the importance of center. For national idols called a social phenomenon and untouchable in sales by any active girl group in the world, it is the highest position a member can reach within the group. Until now, there have only been 18 different centers (Takamina, Acchan, Kojiharu, Jurina, Yuko, Uchii, Mariko, Paruru, Mayuyu, Tomochin, Sasshi, Yukirin, Sakura, Mion, Nana, Yuiyui, Moeka, Zukki) in AKB48's two independent singles and 57 major singles. The Big Three events of 48G are the Senbatsu Sousenkyo, Request Hour, and Janken Tournament. Jurina, known serial winner, made history by winning all of them. Additionally, the bikini releases and gravure shoots have more to do with Japanese pop culture than 48G alone. As of the moment, after the recent concerts last week starting with Miichan's graduation concert, AKB is blazing on their trail hotter than ever since Mayuyu graduated and they lost a face for the group.
Yes! Important to note that no member was ever forced to do gravure, even underaged. They all did because they wanted, and it’s an idol tradition in Japan. I’m glad 48G now prohibits underage gravure, but it’s still a Japanese idol thing, not only AKB.
@@zelkovas A minor can't consent to such pictures being released tho? Even if they wanted to do that legally they were not allowed and honestly how do you expect literally children to know better. I find this part of jpop very disgusting. Especially considering how akb and sister groups fandom is dominated my men, especially middle aged men. There's nothing innocent or cute about that.
@@yxnotmin9814 this may be prohibited by law in the WEST but in Japan it was allowed. And during that time 48g had every kind of fan. HKT48 Miyawaki Sakura said that when she was at school everyone talked about AKB48 (it was their Golden Era), not "middle aged men", that’s a misconception.
it only seems like healthy competition to you bc you're presented with the image of smiling, happy girls who cheer each other on. imagine living a life where you're constantly fighting with your coworkers to keep your job. and you're judged by everyone living your country.
@@tillycomedy2194 no, because you don't understand what I said. It's called healthy competition, because the members' goal of an environment is to foster going after higher achievements while still creating a group where they can push each other by their own successes instead of wishing for their failures or leaving them out-something they always talk about and I even touched on that basically rounds up the literal definition of the term. Thus, if healthy competition is considered the core in this idea, then even negative byproducts [that are created from anything in any area] like mental pressure and occassional/isolated personal conflicts left from or that may interfere with that [which are very important to address, but still] won't take the core away objectively speaking as long as the group is still one where its members are supporting each other, because once more, that's the definition. As for your second sentence, that's more of your problem with the general industry itself, which is an entire topic of its own that as you can see, neither this video nor this comment is necessarily about. How that implements or affects this issue, refer back to the previous points, since those are what this is regarding. That's it, so if you disagree with the girls claiming it's good, or you don't like that they want to be part of such a business, then you're not stating anything here.
I was hoping that the charity works of akb48 was mentioned, especially what they did to help out the victims of the tsunami and earthquake back in 2011
At 4:25 she won't even mention "Taiwan". It's Taipei, Taiwan. She denies an entire nation their right to existence and self-determination, but always talks about rights and abuses and progressive messaging. Hypocritical. I guess it's all fair game unless China is involved, then she's all mum.
@@realtalk6195 This is the internet so that is the safest approach. Would you rather see Taipei, China instead? Not mentioning it will not trigger China or Taiwanese viewers. Taiwan's status is still disputed so being cautious is the safest.
@@realtalk6195 😂😂she’s literally just a TH-camr on the internet. Her not mentioning Taiwan is in no way “denying their right to existence”. If you want political opinions this is probably not the right place for you.
I’ve never been much of an AKB48 fan (aside from only liking Itano Tomomi and being more of a E-Girls, C-ute, and Morning Musume stan), but your hard work is very much appreciated! This group is very complex and I thank you for spreading the word. 💕 I’ve been a Jpop fan longer than Kpop and I’ve seen so many younger Kpop fans speak ill about Jpop or AKB48 in general. These kids have NO idea as to how much of an impact the group had marked, despite the unfortunate incidents from management and members.
i've always been interested in jpop (specifically groups like AKB48) as a kpop fan however it just seems harder to get into as many groups only market locally and it's harder to find info on them :(
Literally I feel exactly the same way. I feel like older jpop fans who got into kpop later all have a similar experience. I was shocked by how many young kpop fans had no idea about the impact of jpop, even the groups modeled after jpop concepts like NCT. A lot of kids don't even know Produce 101 came from 48G. And they had the audacity to disrespect the 48 girls when they were on the 3rd season. It was ridiculously rude and naive.

The daiting ban is not really a rule in their contracts, it's just something members and management kind of agreed to do. They can date but at the end, the only thing that matters for them is fans response, it fans give a bad response then they will probably leave the group. edit: I give up, even with proofs some people can't accept that idols CAN date. Me too. Akb0048 was my introduction to 48g. I was so surprised when I searched the anime in TH-cam and then found out there was a group where it was based on.
Akb48 just reminds me of an idol manufacturer at first glance. Idk, it has always seemed like something weirdly unnerving and robotic. So i'm glad this video came up. I'm sure it'll give more insight. AND IM EARLY.
I hope you learn that AKB is a wholesome group, they may look odd at first with so many members but they take turns through "senbatsu" on who performs each song. The girls work very hard just like any idols! They try their best and give their hearts on stage, I hope you view them more kindly in the future ♥
a lot of people think that but imo i think it’s just because you’re looking at it through a kpop lense. the two industries are very different and always have been. in the context of the jpop industry, having large groups with multiple generations and graduations is fairly normal, it’s been around since the 80s. it’s similar to how a westerner looks at the kpop industry through a biased lens and diminishes it as a harsh abusive system, completely ignoring the history behind it and the cultural context of it. for example bikini mvs are super common in jpop and they aren’t meant to be sexy at all. but a kpop fan might think it’s sexualised. i’m a fan of akb and kpop girl groups. so i can say that: in truth, the girls in akb are treated well. they get paid more fairly and are able to rest more than kpop girls. they can also speak their mind more freely and act less ‘refined’ on camera. there are terrible stories that have come out of 48g like ohori megumi or the ngt situation but in truth that’s not different from the terrible stories you get from kpop - like the april bullying scandal or the chaeyeon busters situation. you have to remember since akb is a massive group, there will be cases like that but it doesn’t reflect on the whole group. at the end of the day all idols are quite manufactured but as an idol fan i think akb48 are one of the more genuine groups out there, the girls are really lovely. i hope more people give them a chance.
@@elizabethbrooks2003 I completely agree. I think the "kpop lense" as you say distorts the view of other countries industries. Jpop has a long rich history that is both similar and different to kpop in many ways. I wish more people would look at it without bias. Jpop has always been wonderful and unique for decades.
You should really watch their documentaries if you think its just something manufactured. The girls emotions are very real. There's also television appearances where they've been unashamedly followed into some pretty personal moments. For example, I can't remember if it was AKBINGO or not, but I remember feeling a bit uncomfortable that they would ever ask Takajo Aki's family permission to film her visiting her sick grandfather while he was in the hospital. But the episode focused on how she had risen all the way to the group's Media Senbatsu range in the elections and how he was the reason she became an idol. Originally she lacked the confidence to commit to auditioning, but he encouraged her to do it where her parents told her she shouldn't if she wasn't going to take it seriously (they basically treated it like a passing fancy and told her not to waste their time and money making the commute). Takajo Aki went on to be one of the only 2 girls in her generation of AKB48 who actually got promoted to full member.
If you're interested in the 48 groups I recommend looking up subed videos of their elections or clips from their variety show (akbingo). If you like kpop I also recommend Heavy Rotation, Aitakatta, No Way Man, and Ponytail to shushu for songs/ MVs!
I was a fan of Akb48 at first when they released Everyday Kachuusha. But after that, I got really overwhelmed once Tomomi graduated because that meant I have to learn about the other members. I still listened to them from time to time but I lost interest in the members. Now, more than 10 years after, I started playing a game called Idol Manager and damn it reminded me so much of the akb system. Watching this video, i realize they really nailed at incorporating the akb system in the game.

19:15 It's not dramatic. Imagine you're a teenager who already working like this and suddenly they separate you from your teammates and close friends, of course you're gonna cry! Even as an adult, imagine suddenly you're transferred to whole new division. Just imagining it already stressed me out 💀

Thank you so much for this video! I'm a Hello! Project (e.g. Morning Musume, Juice=Juice etc.) fan yet my twt tl became kinda headache inducing after PD48 with all the rumors about 48G and jpop idols in general floating around. So not only did I find this video nice to watch myself it's probably also super helpful to spread some knowledge in several other intl fanbases. 🙏🙏🙏
The clip you showed for the team shuffle part (the part where the girls are crying) was actually from the very first team shuffle that included the kennin system! The reason why the girls were crying so hard here and so surprised was because they thought the girl (in the clip it’s actually matsui jurina and ske48) was going to be permanently moved into another group which would’ve been absolutely insane considering how jurina was one of the front runners girls for ske48 at the time (her and matsui Rena were the ace’s of ske48 aka they we’re they main centers for the group)
I actually taught one of the current 48G members when she was a high school student (won't say who so pls don't ask, but she briefly appeared in this video). There's not a lot of tea to spill here, lol I remembered her more as being the student who missed a lot of class & shows up half way through the day than her being an idol for 48G lol... But she was polite though. She did end up graduating from our school (I mean, it's almost impossible to fail a grade anyway), and still actively doing 48G activities. I'm a jpop fan before being a kpop fan... so I actually do remember following the Minegishi incident through a lot of my friends who were HUGE 48G fans. It was the first time I did hardcore research about AKB48 just like you did lol.
Sasshi said she went to a special school that allowed her to skip classes for music activities (that was not Horikoshi). did you teach in such schools or a regular school?
thought i had commented when it was originally out but oh well. I'm happy you took so much time to research the history of 48G! it's been a long journey, ups and downs (currently very much down..), but they, together with hello project, is what many describe a general idol in japan
Gosh I used to listen to AKB48 in middle school and early high school. I actually found out about them because there’s an anime based off them called AKB0048 and some of the AKB48 members and sister group members voice the characters. I knew that HKT48 and SKB48 existed back then but this is the first time I’m hearing of the other groups. I might start getting back into them now thanks to this video! You did a great job 👍🏽
Wow thanks! You researched wonderfully and showed both sides! I love 48G since the golden Kami7 era! My kami oshi is graduated member Akimoto Sayaka, who is a charismatic badass girl and is THE leader of the original Team K (Akimoto Team K), and raised legendary captains in her Team K (Umeda Team B, Minegishi Team 4, Oshima Team K!)
i always get scared when channels who mainly focus on kpop try to talk about 48g because they usually dont do much research, but of course, you never disappoint ! thank you so much for this video, it was amazing and i am sure people who want to get into 48g will find it extremely informative !!! you are truly the best
Thank you for this! You did a very good job. Your doc took me from 1% knowledge up to 90% knowledge about AKB48. My only "knowledge" of idol groups were through anime series like Wake Up! Girls and the Love Live series :) I am also a fan of MCZ, but never really paid much attention to AKB48 and their off shoots. I just thought it too overwhelming to know, but your video totall upnacked it all for me, Thankyou again :)
Other things that are worthy to point out are: - Maeda Atsuko, Oshima Yuko, Shinoda Mariko and Itano Tomomi all returned for the 10th anniversary single, Kimi Wa Melody. Then graduating member Takahashi Minami carried the same role. - The "center" position can get really unfair sometimes. The most notable case would be probably Sakura getting the center position for Kimi Wa Melody when her original team isn't even AKB48. - I kind of understand why the members were dramatic in 19:26, the Kennin position was about to be announced at that time and what they knew at that time was the usual team shuffles (transferring members not concurrent positions), the members thought that Jurina a.k.a SKE48's center and absolute ace will be transferred to AKB48. - If Oshima Mai stayed in AKB48 and joined the first SSK, the original KAMI 7 would have been different. - Also, kind of hoped that Suto Ririka's marriage announcement and overshadowing Watanabe Mayu's graduation announcement was here. - SDN48.
@loving kakashi, nope. Maimai is surely popular and had a lot of gigs outside AKB48. She is one of AKB48's front girls, but she wasn't Maeda Atsuko. The management already decided to push Acchan over anyone else. Maimai would surely push either Nyan Nyan or Tomochin out of the Kami 7, and as someone whose oshi was Maimai, it is still my biggest "what if".
@@lavieenrose4591 her original team is hkt48, based in hakata. for a 10th anniversary single of akb48, it's unfair (and doesn't make any sense) to have someone who isn't a native akb member to be the center. it's for akb, after all. it would make more sense for sakura to be the center if it's an anniversary single for 48g as a whole.
@@lavieenrose4591 Sakura is originally from HKT48 who debuted in 2011. She was in HKT48 for 4 years when she became the center of Kimi Wa Melody, the 10th anniversary single of AKB48. It is unfair because- she wasn't originally from AKB48, she was only in 48G for 4 years while KojiHaru and Mayuyu were still in the group. Miichan and Yukirin are also still in the group, but they aren't really considered as "centers". The management did it to push her, but it gained her haters instead.
@@ayakaimpacts oh so is this like jurina being center for oogoe diamond? i think i remember reading somewhere that at the time there are ppl who aren’t satisfied with her being the center for akb but i cant remember why exactly. but ig sakura being the center for akb’s anniversary is kinda weird when she’s barely center in her own group.
This is a whole loooooot of research, so hands down to you for making this content. I became a fan of 48G (mostly MNL, BNK & somehow AKB) just last 2019, but I can say that you really did a great job in explaining the concept and system 🙌 48G still holds a lot of events.. most sister groups just released/will be releasing singles. Some held concerts just recently including Minegishi Minami's graduation concert (she's the last AKB48 1st generation member to leave the group) along with their 15th anniversary celebration. Their upcoming 58th single in September was just announced too, and AKB48 Group Asia Festival will take place in June together with international sister groups..
I just want to say something as an akb fan regarding the competitiveness of akb, while it is true that there's a lot of it and rivalry between members, it's more of the "let's all fight to get better and become popular FOR (/to bring attention TO) the group" kind of thing. If you go through even ssk (elections) which is the most competitive event between members, the best of rivalries were also the best of friendships... It's never supposed to be a pulling myself up by pushing others down thing. There are probably members who don't like each other, but for each such a case there's like a 100 of wholesome stories of friendship from the members. The negative stuff usually blow up more (understandably) but the members' bonds and relationships they built along the way are also part of the group's charm.
Every time someone tries to discredit or paint a bad picture of 48g and j-idols as a whole, they bring up Miichan’s head shaving incident as if she was forced to do so. Like, akb48 is queens of being dramatic and being extra af, I wish they actually researched properly like you did rather than spreading surface level disinformation instead of actual issues like ngt’s sa case. I saw your tweet and could tell you put a lot of work into this!! Keep it up💜
Yeah, I’m getting tired of those J-idol documentaries where most of them are literally just “Idols being attacked by fans” or “Treated badly by their manager/agency”
Thank you for making this video. This video is very good and helps so many including AKB48 and their young fans. I am a big fan of AKB48 despite the scandals that may give young women and man the wrong impression. Your right with any big organization you are going to have some scandals but, I feel that the AKB48 organization and the country of Japan which they represent internationally is doing an excellent job. Sincerely, TL
Very informative video! As someone who lost interest in the group after the departure of the original kami7, this was like walking down the memory lane xD I only have a few things I would like to add: - As others have commented here already, the head shaving was on Minegishi Minami's own accord. From what I've seen of her in AKBingo! (their variety show), she did seem to have a tendency for rash decisions back then so I think her reaction to the outbreak of her scandal and subsequent head shaving was perfectly in line with her personality. - As for the handsaw incident, one of the injured members, Kawaei Rina, stated that it left her scared and anxious of handshake events and thus, decided to graduate. Security measures also extended to the theatres where the first row of seats has been closed off since.
this is my favorite video you've ever done!!!! i've been listening to their songs for a few years and barely knew any of this info. i love how you did such extensive research and this should be a legit documentary, lol. your videos are the absolute best, evangeline !!
i loved your video!! it was really complete, coming here just before this morning two of both promising future aces (umeyama cocona nmb48 and nishikawa rei akb48 both 18 years old) announced graduation because they wanted to focus on their studies, its beautiful how 48g takes part of their life but everyone has different dreams!🥺 yesterday anna iriyama announced graduation too she's one of the most memorable members, she survived to that attack and stayed in the group working hard, she even worked in my country méxico for a telenovela and she loves mexico lol 8:25 graduations are beautiful, growing up with your oshi is beautiful, 48G is an unique experience for idols and fans💗
Since you did this video, i hope you'll do one for Hello!Project too, mainly Morning Musume '21. The girl group is one of the best in Japan and although they aren't as big as they used to during their golden era, the current era is full of talented and charismatic people. This was so informative and well researched, thank you so much! I have always wondered what this all was about and this helped immensely. I love their graduation ceremony and overall being a fan just seems like a ton of fun. Props for also covering the darker sides, this was a great video :)
I discovered AKB48 when Heavy Rotation went viral but I only grown to love them through their AKBingo! and Mechaike bakajo test videos which I found hilarious. They have a very interesting system and fun music although the management can be pretty harsh. Seeing the original members graduating one by one was sad but I love how special graduation ceremonies are. Getting into the AKB rabbit hole has been a rollercoaster ride.
As a +12 Years fan, I loved this video, Is very well explained and summarized. AKB48GROUP is a big thing even though they are not that popular as they were in golden era. Thank You for making it. お疲れ様です。
There's a recent video of Minegishi Minami (in a variety show) where along with other members they have to write on a plank of wood of things they want to erase. Minami wrote the bald incident. She said she was too young back then and also thought afterwards that shaving her head was so drastic. Shs regrets it. She already wants to move on. 😊
I was just a 4-yr old fan of them and I hate how I know all of the info here and can name about 150 members across all unit (even friends with some). Like I know 48g better than my academics 😆😭 This vid is great btw!! Thanks for featuring them ❤❤
19:15 Jurina's kennin announcement moments is the face crack of the decade... Yuko-chan's over reaction, Mayuyu's shock face, SKE member reaction on the thought of losing their main center.. Takamina basically saying what the hell happened?! And most notably Renachan finally giving some reaction towards Jurina 😂
I was quite a fan during their golden days. My faves were Shinoda Mariko and Miyazawa Sae. Even attended one of the handshakes in years ago. While the graduating system is fresh and wholesome, it is also what led to the declining popularity when all the popular members graduate one by one, the new ones simply couldn’t catch up.
@@user-um8wi5ym4y 48G doesn't need exposure lol the Japanese music industry is 2nd biggest in the world which is why kpop acts go THERE to promote, not vice versa. AKB48 regularly sells 1 million copies of their singles in 24 hours, they're doing just fine lmao.
@@user-um8wi5ym4y It's always funny to me how kpop fans say jpop artists need 'worldwide exposure like kpop' when Japan has the 2nd largest music industry in the world, kpop idols are constantly releasing Japanese versions of things, learning Japanese to promote themselves, flocking to Japan to get money 😄 like when will y'all connect the dots lol

Update: they announce a new single which will be an all-AKB member single (usually AKB48 single will be girls from all over 48G) and will release in September.
Some fun stuff, Akimoto Yasushi, the producer, produced another group in the past, Onyanko Club, and one of the group's former member, married him. He married an idol that he produced.
Yep. Married well after she'd graduated from Onyanko Club and also well after the group itself had disbanded due to how successful all their sub and side projects were. Also if you look at her solo stuff he was not really one of her endorsers. Nothing exactly scandalous there.

The team shuffles are so emotional because some of these girls in their teams are very close, especially because they perform together so much. Some of them have been together for years and years at performances, concerts, handshake events and more.
the fans are also damn emotional during team shuffle especially when their pairing are in different teams 🤣

The fact that they are actually involved in a lot of prostitution is terrifying.
@@afiqahhasbullah9441 Because of many problems in Japanese society. Japanese girls are sexually exploited from an early age, the huge patriarchal system and the treatment of women as second-class citizens because of toxic social issues.

@@Kicknturn oh can you let me know what's the name of momusu anime and game?
Another important thing, following backlash, they do not do gravure of members under 18 anymore (thank god). it was never something that was forced, but definitely a big part of being an idol in Japan for multiple groups (Hello!Project, etc) sadly :(
@@Amanda-kx9st that’s good that Japan has been progressing
I don't think you're correct about no backlash. Recently NMB48 member yokono sumire was caught dating, and the fans had a huge backlash. She didn't participate in any events for a few months and it's recently announced that she is leaving the group (not a graduation, more like fired. Instead of 卒業 it's 辭退)
Miichan said multiple times that she shaved her head because she was so afraid that she will have to leave the group, and the best way to apologize she can think of is to shave off her hair.

Man, finding info for this video was a whirlwind... until suddenly we had too much 😅 48G kinda be a CULTure 😂 but ahhh it turned out so great! Never expect anything less from you girl ☺️
I want to add that there's a whole different 48 world in China. They used to be official sister groups, but they decided to cut their ties with the Japanese world. Some girls are really talented and they produced some iconic songs, but it's a whole different story and I totally understand that you decided to leave this out of your video.
And I actually think it was better to leave out SNH48 and their sister groups. They're not tied to the core anymore, why even bother?
They have team SH who had debuted with first single NO WAY MAN for like a year ago now.
It's fascinating to realize that Shanghai is literally capable of supporting 2 48gs.
Even JKT48' Melody gave an eye to her member when she accidentally mentioning SNH since SNH already depart from the 48 group at that time 😅
Thank you so much for making this video!!!
Ok
Thank you for speaking so in depth and respectfully about the core of 48 Family, AKB48 ♥ 🌟
I'm 27 and I've been a jpop fan since I was a teenager, before I listened to kpop. I'm so glad to see AKB48 being treated with the respect they've always deserved.
same tho...I started with JPop since primary school and before, I didn't have many friends that I could talk about Jpop too since they are into Kpop. what hurts me more is that they even talking trash about Jpop just because it's not up to their taste in music but its okay rn cuz they've slowly gotten into Jpop>
...because AK48 is weird.
@@Heisel98 exactly I had the same problem all my friends were into kpop in school so I had no one to talk to about jpop.

@@justapeach8859 fair enough. However, I’m not aware of a Kpop group with 13 year olds in swim suits.
It was also an awful move by management to not mention it was a kennin until after they called her name
I think it's was one of the moment, on camera, where Renachan shown what she feel about Jurina as a members. Renachan has always been awkward with Jurina due to the different in their age, personality and the fact that management put them together (and the fact that fans and even member are shipping them together)
omfg that analogy is amazing ahahaha. that'd be so weird!

Hearing you mention the Kami 7 and actually showing their pictures, ugh girl bravo bravo,

I’ve been a Jpop fan longer than Kpop and I’ve seen so many younger Kpop fans speak ill about Jpop or AKB48 in general. These kids have NO idea as to how much of an impact the group had marked, despite the unfortunate incidents from management and members.
exactly!
i've always been interested in jpop (specifically groups like AKB48) as a kpop fan however it just seems harder to get into as many groups only market locally and it's harder to find info on them :(
Literally I feel exactly the same way.

I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO SO LONG! EXCITED TO WATCH
They try their best and give their hearts on stage, I hope you view them more kindly in the future ♥
a lot of people think that but imo i think it’s just because you’re looking at it through a kpop lense. the two industries are very different and always have been. in the context of the jpop industry, having large groups with multiple generations and graduations is fairly normal, it’s been around since the 80s. it’s similar to how a westerner looks at the kpop industry through a biased lens and diminishes it as a harsh abusive system, completely ignoring the history behind it and the cultural context of it. for example bikini mvs are super common in jpop and they aren’t meant to be sexy at all. but a kpop fan might think it’s sexualised.
i’m a fan of akb and kpop girl groups. so i can say that:
in truth, the girls in akb are treated well. they get paid more fairly and are able to rest more than kpop girls. they can also speak their mind more freely and act less ‘refined’ on camera. there are terrible stories that have come out of 48g like ohori megumi or the ngt situation but in truth that’s not different from the terrible stories you get from kpop - like the april bullying scandal or the chaeyeon busters situation. you have to remember since akb is a massive group, there will be cases like that but it doesn’t reflect on the whole group. at the end of the day all idols are quite manufactured but as an idol fan i think akb48 are one of the more genuine groups out there, the girls are really lovely. i hope more people give them a chance.
@@justapeach8859 I remember seeing a comment once that said J-Pop was the "chill" cousin of K-Pop and I agree, lol.

Thank you so much for this video! I'm a Hello!
What course did you teach and how does the girl do in school with her missing a lot of classes?
Sasshi said she went to a special school that allowed her to skip classes for music activities (that was not Horikoshi). did you teach in such schools or a regular school?

Okay this actually looks so fun to be apart of
Other things that are worthy to point out are:
- Maeda Atsuko, Oshima Yuko, Shinoda Mariko and Itano Tomomi all returned for the 10th anniversary single, Kimi Wa Melody.
- SDN48.
@loving kakashi, nope.
Maimai is surely popular and had a lot of gigs outside AKB48. She is one of AKB48's front girls, but she wasn't Maeda Atsuko. The management already decided to push Acchan over anyone else.
Maimai would surely push either Nyan Nyan or Tomochin out of the Kami 7, and as someone whose oshi was Maimai, it is still my biggest "what if".
can i ask why sakura being the center for kimi wa melody is unfair? i thought she was a kennin? was she not a member of akb48 team a at that time?
I became a fan of 48G (mostly MNL, BNK & somehow AKB) just last 2019, but I can say that you really did a great job in explaining the concept and system 🙌
48G still holds a lot of events.. most sister groups just released/will be releasing singles. Some held concerts just recently including Minegishi Minami's graduation concert (she's the last AKB48 1st generation member to leave the group) along with their 15th anniversary celebration. Their upcoming 58th single in September was just announced too, and AKB48 Group Asia Festival will take place in June together with international sister groups..
i was super impressed by the research you did far beyond what i helped out with! thanks for putting in so much effort!
Thanks for your help!
YOUR HAIR SO SO CUUTEE!
as usual
I am genuenly very happy that you made a video about our girls
Me who's been a fan since 2008 being able to name almost every current and graduated member from all AKB48 and its sister groups 😳
That was when I was born-
@Starlight Shine Bruh, your telling US. I WASN’T EVEN BORN YET LMAO! I was born in 2010, but became a fan since 2020 :D.
@@prate7517 Oh nice.
@Starlight Shine haha, thx! ❤️
@@prate7517 I'm a 2000 liner and I feel so old now 🙈;_; hahaha!!! Enjoy your school ~ study hard!
I’ve been a fan of AKB48 for a long time and Maeda Atsuko and Takamina graduations will always hit home for me
That's a whole lotta information!! Thank you for this detailed video!!
As someone who lost interest in the group after the departure of the original kami7, this was like walking down the memory lane xD
I only have a few things I would like to add:
- As others have commented here already, the head shaving was on Minegishi Minami's own accord.
I always feel like if you watch Morning Musume '21 or any Hello!Project groups' concert performances, your satisfaction level for idol performances will go up. They are just amazing! Please do one for them too ♥
Yeah! that'll be great!
i just noticed she styled herself like a 48G member with the hair accessory too
Well I certainly recognise Yuko Oshima. She always stood out as being so full of life and having such a confident, cheeky expression.
I am so glad I took my time to watch your video. Even though I'm late by two weeks due to university assignments, this video could have been a freaking seminar. I also had known zero, absolutely nothing about AKB48 before watching. Your research and presentation is fantastic, and this style of video became my favorite, all around youtube! Thank you for turning your channel into something so freaking amazing! Can't wait for your next one, and learn more with you.
I adore how informative you are without being too biased. It’s refreshing content to be able to learn about my favorite topics without drama! New subscriber, keep it up.
I was waiting so much for this video!!! Thank you so much!!! I love it!!! I became a fan of AKB48 because of Produce 48!!!
I hope everyone here is well and taking care of yourselves!!! Fan here and Love from Brazil!!! 😍🥰💖❤️🤍😘😷❤️🇧🇷
Imagine being a member of one of the groups mentioned and having to remember your whole groups names 😳
💀💀💀💀
it's ok. there are girls the general manager didn't even know hahaha. I remember takamina was put in a spot when they told her to name a few girls from the sister groups and she panicked a little ^_^
If you’re a big fan you would remember 100 names minimum i swear
Couldn’t wait for this vid !!! 🤪🤪
I watched this randomly cause im literally a fan, and noticed its 52 mins ago😅🤣
As a +12 Years fan, I loved this video, Is very well explained and summarized. AKB48GROUP is a big thing even though they are not that popular as they were in golden era.
Thank You for making it. お疲れ様です。
There's a recent video of Minegishi Minami (in a variety show) where along with other members they have to write on a plank of wood of things they want to erase. Minami wrote the bald incident. She said she was too young back then and also thought afterwards that shaving her head was so drastic. Shs regrets it. She already wants to move on. 😊
Ur so underrated
I mean how do u not hv atleast a Million views
You did an outstanding job researching all this information about AKB48 and their background
I was just a 4-yr old fan of them and I hate how I know all of the info here and can name about 150 members across all unit (even friends with some). Like I know 48g better than my academics 😆😭
This vid is great btw!!
😁
I was quite a fan during their golden days. My faves were Shinoda Mariko and Miyazawa Sae. Even attended one of the handshakes in years ago. While the graduating system is fresh and wholesome, it is also what led to the declining popularity when all the popular members graduate one by one, the new ones simply couldn’t catch up.
I’ve been a fan since 2013 and it’s so refreshing watching a video that is full of correct information you did such a great job researching the video
I'm happy you used lot of clips of old members. Brings back lot of memories and kind shows much more than how it is nowadays.
Kami 7 will always be legendary, even after many generations, they still remain icons!
How much do yall wanna bet that in a few hours, half of these comments will talk about IZONE and NCT 💀
I haven’t seen any Izone ones yet, but I have seen some NCT ones 💀💀🙈
If IZONE or NCT is mentioned, it's because of how far reaching they are internationally. This is good exposure for 48g.
I saw "this is like NCT" comments when it was first uploaded lol, I'm still shocked kpop kids don't know NCT was modeled after 48G lol. The irony
NCT:we're the biggest group!
literally any japanese group:we exist.
I’m so happy to finally see people getting more interested in AKB and just jpop in general because back when I used to listen to a lot of jpop a lot of kpopers bashed us jpop listeners saying that jpop was trash and that kpop was cooler. Like Dayumn I’m happy that people are more open to different music genres and pop culture! I’m happy that AKB is getting the recognition they deserve!
In the past 8 years i have been listend to them AND STILL SUPPORT THEM TILL NOW😭🥰
i always appreciate how well researched and interesting your videos are. i clicked on this not knowing anything about akb48... i've heard of them before but i had no idea the extent of their group and overall concept. this was super cool!
You can know more of them with this;

Update: they announce a new single which will be an all-AKB member single (usually AKB48 single will be girls from all over 48G) and will release in September.
Some fun stuff,
Akimoto Yasushi, the producer, produced another group in the past, Onyanko Club, and one of the group's former member, married him.
He married an idol that he produced.
Yep. Married well after she'd graduated from Onyanko Club and also well after the group itself had disbanded due to how successful all their sub and side projects were. Also if you look at her solo stuff he was not really one of her endorsers. Nothing exactly scandalous there.
I've always been so curious about how the system works! thank you so much for the video 😊
i was actually waiting for a video JUST like this because the whole akb48 thing seemed so fascinating to me but i couldn't find a video like the one you made. until now! thank you :)
if you're interested in more (particularly about the current akb) may i suggested finding akbprimer on carrd and 48directory on tumblr!
