Cool. We got in Rivington and a few others in the 70s when they were open, before the stupid metal gates, blocked in tunnels and such.

My great grandad was killed in a Zeppelin raid on January 31st 1916. He was waiting for the bus after finishing work at Stanton Ironworks near Ilkeston in Derbyshire. He and another bloke were killed outright. The Zeppelin was L20 in the charge of Kapitainleutnant Franz Stabbert. He was part of an 8 ship flight that set out to raid Manchester,Sheffield and Liverpool, but Stabbert got lost and dropped his bombs blind. There is a plaque comemorating the raid which cost 2 civilian lives and 1 cow.

The Tower Trail ! :) Super interesting bits, all included. Always a great Martin Zero production. Glad to see James is doing well. Pack a bit of canvas or wool to lay out for tea and it can second for laying over the barbed wire crossing in a pinch. We used our coats for wire crossing back in the day, before nylon.

You didn’t mention The Grants Arms pub in the middle of town! Same brothers.
I lived in Rammy from age 10 to 29 and I NEVER visited Grants Tower!!! But I didn’t even know about the other tower! So you’ve educated me.
Regarding the Zepp raid, next time you are near Rammy pop up to Holcombe Village. Stand near the front door of the Shoulder and look across the road. Facing you is a building which still shows shrapnel damage in the windowsill and door jamb from one of the Zepp’s bombs. A little further down the road in the direction of Hassy you’ll see the former junior school. In the gable end on the Hassy side you’ll see some of the stone work is a different colour - one of the bombs blew out the gable end so you are seeing a shadow of the damage from 100+ years ago. A local photographer called Roger Shilton did a book of old photos of that time including the bomb damage pix. One of the bombs fell to the east of the road and down the hill some way, narrowly missing the house I used to own on Tanners Terrace.
What about Peel Tower? It’s a lovely hike and the views are boss. And so is Darwen Tower near where I lived just before I emigrated over here to Portugal two years back. I used to walk up with my wife and my cat (yup, you read that right!) from time to time.
I simply LOVED this video - I was getting bored with ‘samey’ tunnel vids so this was a breath of fresh air.
I say it again - if you ever fancy a look inside some Verdun WW1 forts or maybe a Maginot fort get in touch… but don’t leave it too long, I’m getting well owd now!

LOL i think we have all gone the wrong way to some where only then to find out there was a much easier or shorter route . My one that sticks in my mind is climbing Red mountain ( not really a mountain ) a steep pyramid shaped remains of an old volcano on Ascension Island . Well i walked to it along the road and on the left there it was , so off i went right up , steep and a nightmare took me hours and some times i slid down a bit . Any way very hot and tired but pleased with myself that i got to the top and then looked down only to see a well trodden path that was far easier than what i had just put myself through . Well i guess we live and learn lol . Great video as always .

James was related to the Grants., The name Steeple Jack was given to James by Lord Elco after climbing Haddington Town House Steeple. My Grt Grandfather and Granfather were also Steeple Jacks. We live in Darwen and Very Proud of James and both Great Grandfather & Grandfather both named Robert Wright. One day I would like to visit the Tower were James lived.

Hi Martin, The Tentering Tower was built in 1866 and as you said it was used used to dry cloth from the mill, tentering involved the stretching and drying of cloth fixed to wooden frames by a series of sharply pointed hooks. Another very cool video. I think black pudding is made with pigs blood, onions and pork fat I think so it would be nice to have it with apple sauce.

I've used kites to raise antenna wires. I would fly the kite and then attach a second line to the kite string and then have an assistant move away with it to form a 90 degree angle. We then walked to opposite sides of the object we needed to get over and the pulled down the kite. Heavier ropes can the be hauled up and over using the string.

If you get your bits caught on the barbed wire, there's no need to take offence or take a fence. I've heard of the kite flying when there was a sudden demand for lightning conductors after a lot of storm damage to the early mill chimneys. I think that they flew the kite well past the chimney then allowed the line to land on top of the brickwork. The kite then fell to the ground and a heavier rope was attached to the string and pulled over the chimney. The man was then pulled up the chimney by this rope, fastening the cable as he went. - no need for ladders or such luxuries.

Hi Martin, not sure of their rarity but I too have a Samuelsons Commer Bus 2500 series. My dad worked at Samuelsons in Crickelwood back in the 70's, unfortunately I have lost my camerman though!

Hi Martin. Top video again, as ever. Thought you were an 80's synth pop guy though, surely you've not started styling yourself after my hero Rob Halford now, you guys could start a tribute act! Judas Priest forever! Turbo Lover rocks, 1986 forever. Love from an old rocker and fan from the south.

Thanks Martin there's lots of stuff about that area that I know about as lots of relatives and friends are from there, as a jeweller I used to make charms of Peel and Grants towers in the seventies. If I was to climb over a barbed wire fence that I couldn't vault over I'd put my jacket or jumper over it first so it appears that you have no respect for your most important bits, lol. Brilliant as always mate, have you heard of the very ancient Radcliffe Tower as it's worth a look, it's down Dumers Lane. Take care and all the best. Stevie

Nice camo Martin! Grant's Tower looked like it was quite ornate. What a shame that it is such poor condition now. It sucks that you got lost, but you saw some nice country. The fence crossing looked dangerous. Tentering Tower looked more like it was a gaol to me. Take care Martin.

Martin, regarding the airship bombing. If you go to Holcombe Village and stand in the car park of the Shoulder of Mutton pub, look across the road at the building opposite and you can still see the shrapnel marks in the walls from one of the bombs dropped from the airship.
