Men & Magic recommends 4 to 20 pairs of 6-sided dice. Great box & collection of D&D home-made booklets. I like the idea of making own box to house D&D booklets. It would be great project for 50 year anniversary of the Original RPG.

You are a man after my own heart. I started out with the wood box set back in 1975. Those early dungeons and dragons adventures were the best.

      That's awesome!
Of course, the more I'm reading the more I'm figuring out that we made a lot of mistakes back then.

I love the process. Repairing the old rule books. It's fun to see what you can come up with. I picked up an outdated multi media PC for 40 bucks. Just have to format it. I wish there was some way of running these PDFs on a Commadore 64. I know TSR got into the video gaming early on. I have an early game based on 2e rules.

Ok so that table with weapon damage and modifiers is perfect. Don't mind if I do. Heck, now I kinda want to see if I can come up with something to improve on it.

    • @grumpyoldgrognard9561
      @grumpyoldgrognard9561  ปีที่แล้ว

Most of us only used those tables in certain circumstances. In single combat, for example. Even Gary Gygax didn't really use the to-hit-by-ac modifiers.
If you're looking for a game that puts a more realistic spin on the effectiveness of specific weapons against specific armor types, take a look at Arms Law/Claw Law. It's very table heavy, but it's a much grittier more realistic combat system.

Grumpy, this is a really cool idea. I have all the docs as pdf’s. I think I will print the out like you have done. Genius idea to shrink them down. What percent did you use? I had a box like this back in the early ‘80’s. I had lined the inside with red felt. You could then use the box as a place to roll the dice while playing. All you need now is some vintage miniatures painted in oils or enamels to finish the set. This is a cool idea, since it is nice to hold the documents in your hand. BTW, the Holmes edition is the best. It is the only one I wanted as a kid. It also has an adventure in it, so it gives you the rules and a module! Thanks for showing this!

Just let Adobe PDF Reader do the work for you. Just use the "print as booklet" feature and it will automatically resize each page to fit on a 4.25x5.5 half page.
      Thanks so much for watching!

@@grumpyoldgrognard9561 oh, ok. Sounds simple. I am old school everything, so I thought I would have to do some crazy sizing and adjust the margins. Thanks for the help.

I own a complete set of OD&D. I will never sell. No box, but I have a wooden box for them. Best edition. No Chainmail, but I have Swords and Spells.

That is a awesome box set you have made. I wish I could be that organized.
Just out of curiosity, (because while I have played AD&D since the early 80's, I have only just in the last year learned that AD&D and D&D were two different games) why do you say start with Holmes? Is Holmes not BECMI?
I don't suppose you live in Chicago and DM do you?
    Thank you for your time.

Kenny that looks awesome. Would love a set as well. Is this possible to have done?

That would be ridiculously illegal, but it's VERY easy and completely legal to do yourself for personal use. If you have everything you need (printer, pdfs, steel straightedge, long stapler, box cutter or exacto knife with plenty of blades [or a paper guillotine]) you can get it done in an afternoon. The captcorajus link in the notes above teaches you everything you need to know.
      Tips:
-Print 2 copies of your favorite book and use the first as a practice job (you're going to mess up your first staple binding).
-If cutting by hand with a box cutter or exacto, make lots of shallow cuts rather than a few deep ones. Paper Guillotine is WAY faster.
-Fold each page separately, THEN staple.
-Staple FIRST, THEN cut. Paper Guillotine is WAY faster AND easier.
