Slim, you did a pretty decent job on repairing that mandolin. I’m impressed. Something you might not know is that most likely the reason the top warped like it did is from being dry and hot. Musicians keep a device inside their instruments to keep this from happening. It’s a piece of rubber tubing with holes and with sponge inside. You keep this damp in dry conditions and it provides the moisture to the spruce top. You can buy these in a music shop. Make sure you take some lessons too, they’re a big help. My son, dil and granddaughter are all musicians and I play a little too. My son has also built an instrument. Hope this information helps.

The condition of this mandolin in the beginning is a prime example of what happens over the course of time when an instrument is stored under tension...the tension of the strings will collapse the instrument in on itself when it's stored without loosening the strings...that's why the top was so warped...I have a Conqueror bowl back mandolin that is a great sounding instrument...I hope you practice & stick with it, because they're fun instruments to play...

I have a (once valuable)classical guitar with the bridge ripped off which damaged the wood beneath (someone put all wire strings on it, & it exploded one day). I keep holding onto it, but afraid I'm gonna die & someone will trash it. It had a beautiful sound when it was playable...Just waiting on the right person interested & talented enough to save it too. My hat's off to you on the restoration of the mandolin!

Amazing transformation. Hide glue is usually used for repairs. NOT that I would have a clue how to use it. I used to play the fiddle and am also left handed But when I was taught I was taught right handed I had hoped after many years of not playing I could string it up backwards and just learn all over again left handed but it did not work for me. My fiddle is also in poor repair. Needs new pegs which I have but did not have the tool or know how to cut the taper into them to make them fit So I broke down and ought a new fiddle Investment 60 dollars shipped so not a huge investment. NOT that I can play it any better. Arthur has permanently come to visit and NT welcomed one bit. But I do pick it up and keep trying. My brain has forgotten the songs but my fingers still kind of remember. Interesting how that happens. Sooo did you find you had a knack for playing? I hope so. Music is a great partner.

Food for thought... I'm left handed... but I play all my instruments right handed... It's all going to seem foreign to you anyway... I would learn to play right handed if I were you... remember.. all intricate stuff you do you do with your left hand. Which is perfect for fretting a mandolin. Your right hand is just wrist action.
