  • Ryan returns fire as his 1990 Chevy 454 SS also gets dropped down into the weeds with its very own lowering kit, new brakes, wheels and tires. Matching stance for stance with Kevin's Lightning, Ryan's getting his big block Chevy ready to go head to head with the Ford in our MuscleTrux series. Also, we'll show you how to breathe new life into your worn out GMC or Chevrolet truck by doing a simple, hand tools only engine swap and it's easier than you think!

3 things hurt that 454. Induction, low compression and the 400th. Well, maybe 4 things if you add in the exhaust. All relatively easy fixes. You've still got a 454.

I think they dynoed the stock 350 in second gear and then dynoed the 383 in third. If you look at the bottom of the dyno sheet you can see the difference in max speed. Dynoing in a higher gear can make it seem like theres more power when in reality it has something to due with the ratio of that gear and load on the engine/dyno. So it just makes the 383 swap look more amazing than it really is.

*I can't believe you're replacing a 350 with only 165,000 miles on it! that truck aint hurt. they aren't even ready for major service until they get up around the 200,000 mile mark. and that intake on the suburban motor would be clean enough to eat off of if they only used Seafoam to keep the intake running clean. 1 full can in the gas with every 3rd tank and twice a year running a can through the power brake booster vacuum line and letting it blow out all of the carbon and varnish and you wouldn't even need to wipe off the internals of that motor. that's what i use along with Mobil 1 engine oil and synthetic transmission fluid and i've never had a problem out of Any of my vehicles all 3 of my Escalades run like a top and i even use Mobil 1 for turbo diesels in my 06 dodge mega cab 2500 as well as seafoam in it for fuel system treatment and keeping the injectors and intake clean on it as well and so far they all still look brandnew inside when i run the bore scope through them* Could you guys PLEASE do an episode on the importance of using the correct coolant in vehicles also? i am tired of arguing with people about why it's important to use Dexcool in your GM motor when you change everything out for the seasons. everyone swears that it doesn't matter coolant is coolant and it's ABSOLUTELY NOT! i've experienced the hazzards of using the wrong stuff first hand as the green stuff in my 99 tahoe actually ate the intake gasket seals in a little over 3 months causing an expensive and time sucking replacement of the intake gaskets. i've had that truck for 14 years now running Dexcool and never had another issue with it. so proper coolant DOES make a difference!

Instead of the overpriced caltrack system and losing your overload spring.. go to a wrecking yard and get a set of leafs from a 3/4 ton or 1 ton single wheel. Direct bolt in. Did it on my 454SS. No more wheel hop, and doesn't bottom out over every dip in the road with the Belltech flip kit and C-notch that isn't deep enough if you put a more than a pillow in the bed. Chevy should have put better springs on the SS from the factory. For those wondering, the ride is the same.

How to turn a Stock Truck Build into an Expensive Overkill project just to "One Up the Other Guy"...LOL.
I would have left the Suspension mostly stock aside from fresh Bilstein shocks, convert rear drums to 4 wheel disc with slotted rotors, Nitto or Mickey Thompson Sticky Drag Radials, and get a 700R4, or just avoid the 1990 model year and get a '91 or '92 that came with the Overdrive. True Dual Flowmaster Exhaust and spend the rest on a Top End Kit for the 454 to wake it up.

Perfect truck. Only color scheme better that *black* *w/red* *interior* is *white* *w/red interior* ... Not to mention a loud rumble from that 454 (& whatever exhaust they have, maybe some series 70 Flowmasters)... & Put an 8in sealed sub under the passengers seat.
*Think I'd rather see it *raised* up a few (or 6) inches, rather than lowering it a few inches.
... Just too bad it's a single cab, since I'm 6-6'1" w/long legs and the seats are always uncomfortable for me ☹️
