Hi Jack, Jamie from Newcastle, thanks for the 94 car update, what a beautiful thing it is, you just cant get enough of these cars, they really were the best. Great to see you jumping into the Mustang with James this year, and just as your dad LP did with DJ back in the green Mustang days, its great to see, I'll definitely be following you two guys for sure. Another great video Jack, and as you probably know I'm a Ford men, but I just love the Perkins days of old, LP and that bullet proof Commodore engineering, and I was and still am that Ford guy who loves the Holdens to, great memories mate. I'll be willing you on for a win at Bathurst this year 🇭🇲👍
Jack, when time permits, can you explain to folks the history behind the swap from Holden to Chev based engines for the '94 season. This was a bizarre decision considering the Old Man had won at Bathurst with a Holden powerplant in '93 when the big budget teams had already switched to Chev Crate Race Motors & Larry clobbered all of 'em with his ferocious reliable Holden. You might also explain the strengths & weaknesses which differentiate the Holden from the Chev.... Especially the cylinder heads on the Holden being inlet exhaust inlet exhaust compared to the archaic caveman siamesed layout still used in the Chev at that point in time. On paper, the Holden was the better layout at the time & Larry knew this & took advantage of it to punch out yet another Holden V8 powered Bathurst victory in '93. This win did tend to make the Chevs look a bit erm... inadequate. From my rusty recollections, NO CHEV HAD EVEN BEATEN A HOLDEN AT BATHURST EXCEPT FOR THE 327 IN '68 & THE 350 IN '69 which was before Holden's own inhouse sorted 308s arrived with the L34 in '74. Basicly, Larry kept Holden V8s on their winning streak right up until the beginning of the newer V8 SuperCar era & he was then the first to win Bathurst in '95 with Chev power after Tricky & Bowie scraped home first with a Windsor powered Falcon in '94. Larry dotted the 20 year success story of Holden V8 superiority with his '93 Bathurst win. Switching local manufacturing from Holden V8 to Chev was the beginning of the end for local manufacturing. It was a no go zone we should never have ventured into. The Holden V8 was a proven performer. Please do us all a mammoth favour, rope the Old Man in & give us an episode where you guys give us the inside line on the transition from Holden to Chev powering our ATCC & Endurance Championship Race Cars. Many of us still run our much loved Holden V8s. Even my busted arse rooted old 60 Series LandCruiser Rust Bucket is still prowling around leaving a trail of Japanese rust while her 253 Holden powerplant just never quits. I think the old heap will one day break in half & all I'll have to do is knock her into 4 wheel drive & I'll still be mobile while the Holden V8 continues to propel the rusted off front half! Long live the beautiful local Holden V8!
Jack thank you for these episodes on the rebuilds I just love your passion and enthusiasm for these cars - can you tell us what kg weight you think the 94 car will be including fluids plus what you expect the max power and torque of the engine would be ? Thanks Stephen
Yeah it should be about 1325-1335kgs with fluids but minus driver. Will publish this information on our facebook page when we drop it on the scales. Or we may be able to do a video. The engine was dyno'd some time ago, i'll have to find the dyno sheet. Cheers
Thanks for the start up vid Jack, sounds trick,Glad you've got a seat in the endurance races later in the year,When do you think the Commodore will have its first run ? Hope the cameras are there, can't wait to see this beast out on the track where it deserves to be,Thanks again Jack
Hi Jack, great to see these old girls still alive. A couple of questions, when it’s on jacks do you put it into gear to run the driveline and what do you enjoy driving more between these older cars and the more modern ones?
Thanks! Yes we do sometimes, you might've noticed the trolley jack under the diff, that's to get the rear axle at ride height so that the tailshaft runs true if we drop it in a gear, take some unnecessary load off the uni's in the tailshaft. I actually need to bleed the clutch again and then set it up off the stop as a "final" set up before I do that run up in gear but its a 2 man job lol The current cars are basically a purpose built race car, so they are quite refined. The older cars are based on a road car and beefed up to become race cars. I would love to build an older car with some of the current technology, in terms of suspension, brakes, some aerodynamics, engine and tuning etc. etc. It wouldn't be that far off the pace. Cheers!!
@@perkinsengineering PERFECT! CAN YOU PLEASE MAKE IT A REPLICA OF THE DAYGLOW LARRY VKS WHICH CLOBBERED ALLCOMERS AT BATHURST IN 1984?!!! Please, please, pretty please!
The old man would of loved that caravan ! Dont know about the tucked in skirt , tight jeans , moose knuckles galore & with those caramel boots 🤔 . My main observation of the video though was the angle of the radiator , is that different with the oz & chev motors ? Thanks
Yes the caravan is very nice. Haha I'll keep that in mind for future episodes!! No the radiator is actually identical to the Holden one, just the water inlet and outlets are in different position. So identical radiator and same mount etc. so angle is the same. Cheers!!
Would be amazing to hear a side by side of the 93 and 94 with some high quality mics from the front and rear so we can hear the differences between the Chev and Iron Lion
Yes they would sound similar in a way, especially at the tail pipe end in the workshop because the exhaust and muffler system is identical between the two. Probably more noticeably different on the race track and the induction noise could be different too. Cheers!
Jack love ya PE vids. Cant wait to see the shakedown laps at calder. Ill be watching Maybe u should take the 93 Holden powered VP n do some comparison runs with yr dad. That would be awesome Btw l was at Bathurst last year to see yr dad do some laps. I loved it. Is the 1994 Chev powered VP taking the trek up to Bathurst as u did with the 93 car.
Yes it would be ace to have both cars out on track at once! I don't know if there's any plans to take the 94 car to Bathurst this year, it would be cool to have it up there! Cheers!!
I'll have to dig out the build sheet, the bottom end isn't miles away from the Holden to be fair, I think the first Chev Crankshaft was actually sized to Holden big ends to see if they could use the Holden Conrods!!!
Good question! It's the over flow/breather lines for fuel fillers and brake/clutch reservoirs. Period correct of course, but not likely to be done the same way today!!
This is a good question, bit tricky to answer. I guess a lot of the Holden parts were getting supplied FOC (or falling off a truck!) but eventually they had Carillo Conrods, JE pistons and so on, so those parts ultimately cost money and the Chev required the same parts, maybe with a bigger window for R&D and performance increases. Ultimately they stopped making the Holden stuff so Chev became the cheaper alternative and the other parts generally see the effect of market force.
Jack, I have been a loyal subscriber- but I’m sorry but for you to go to the team that starts with the f&$@?n letter F is disappointing! Is your dad still talking to you? Sorry mate. Obviously there is a reason, just disappointing for us that have supported you in the past.
Unfortunately there's no Holden's to drive any more at Bathurst! I actually raced a Ford in 2010 and 2014, so it's not brand new. Dad raced with Dick Johnson in a Ford Mustang in 1985! I'm excited to be back with James Courtney, we both had success together at the Holden Racing Team and now we are with Blanchard Racing Team and hoping for more success! I'm a Holden man, but I'm lucky I can't see the Ford badge when I'm driving the car! Cheers!!
@@perkinsengineering Please feel free to bring us some early Blanchard Racing History. Graham raced Holdens way back & was the operator of a beautiful Red Motor powered FE Holden Sports Sedan which was restored back to Group N spec & has raced Historic since the very early '90s. Think you will find Brock Perkins Moffat Lowndes Dick and others have driven other manufacturers at some point in their careers due to opportunities...
This is precisely why we all love V8s. Great video Jack, thanks for tantalising our eyes and ears.
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers!
A natural at talking off the cuff, car looking and sounding great too!
Many thanks, Cheers!!
Great video, Jack, and thanks to Snowy River. Looking forward to Calder!
Yes should be fun!! Cheers!
Nice one Jack, takes me back. Thank you
You're welcome! Cheers!!
Love looking at real cars.
Thanks for watching, Cheers!!
Love the sound of that small block! Great job the car look as amazing as the first one.
Yes it's coming along very nicely!! Cheers!!
Great hookup with the caravan! You and James are getting to the stage to be grey nomads🤣 see you on the highway.
Hahaha yeah we aren't far off!!!! JC has a few more greys poking through lol
Very different engine to the ol GMH 5ltr Eng but the 18 degree eng was certainly a favorite. 👍👍👍
Yes it became "the" Race Engine in Holden's for many years! Cheers!!
love the old roll of tape to keep the door open trip race tape roll works better lol
Haha probably could make a nice neat wedge out of nylon or something but the roll of tape works all the same!!! Cheers!

What was the power difference between the last of the P.E. Holden engines and the '94 Chev engine?
Had been interested in that question myself
I'll see if I can dig out the numbers actually! Cheers!!
Very interested
very interested to hear this too.
Great vid!
Congrats with SRC comming on board too👌
Thanks! Yes hopefully we can bring more content throughout the year! Cheers!!

Good question! It's the over flow/breather lines for fuel fillers and brake/clutch reservoirs. Period correct of course, but not likely to be done the same way today!!
Is the passenger side valve cover upside down on purpose, to have the breather at the rear I assume?
More likely the fabricator put the oil squirters in without looking at the logo
So cheaper to race the Holden or the Chev of that era?
This is a good question, bit tricky to answer.
