As a developer, I'm really impressed by they way you're explaining technical information to non-technical audience. Most people would either use a too simplistic analogy which breaks down, or will convey too much details which are just confusing for the non-technical people. You manage to avoid both of these pitfalls.

I think the DDOS analogy was a bit over complicated. Suggestion: describe it in percentage of server capacity.
Example: Company X has a average traffic of 150 Mbps, and a peak traffic of 300 Mbps. They build their server to handle 500 Mbps for future proofing. Anything more would be wasted resources. When they are hit with even a 550 Mbps attack (110% capacity), it effects their customers. A 1.25 Gbps attack would be 250% their capacity and makes the server unusable for actual customers.
No need for converting to sips of soda.
    Otherwise great content.

my journey into the future has just begun! I'm a first year Engineering student and I really just would be happy to be a part of something so unifying as becoming a loyal team member. I know how to accomplish a mission a team is driven towards and follow orders, i'll never leave a man behind and will carry my friends during the times they were it was my turn to pull the weight. I will learn quickly because i'm open minded and not afraid of failure. Anyone need an apprentice? I'm not perfect, but each day I progress because I get what I give. Who ever is the Shepard lead the way for me to follow!

Only time can tell, Microsoft makes money from open source, and their Azure host tons of Linux OS and container. But will they open source Office, IE (no one want it even though), Visual Studio, MS SQ Server? I don't see them happening. Did they make duo boot linux from UEFI easier? No, if it is not the opposite. Do they still charge Microsoft Tax on PC to depress Linux? Or do they refund you money if you delete Windows when buying Laptop? Not seeing that yet. So, yeah, Microsoft loves linux, but it is like Cat 'loves' fish type of love.

This acquisition is coming on the heals of Microsoft buying its way into the Linux foundation and is a clear sign that the embrace extent extinguish mantra is a live and well at the "new" Microsoft. They have even created their own branded Linux distro for IOT devices. The current popular FOSS tools are about to be either destroyed outright or tarnished severely. But the silver lining is that the FOSS movement will just start moving platforms and forking projects like they always do.

"You're Microsoft, you're trying to be a monopoly, you don't support FOSS, you don't like Linux"
*Fires CEO, embraces Linux, starts being open and inclusive with developers*
"You're trying to take over Linux and open-source!"
I think you're overreaching here. They've noticed that being open and interfacing with independent developers GROWS their business. At this point in time, 'extinguishing' Linux and Github would destroy their entire business and lose them the entire industry. I'm curious, what could they possibly do to earn your support? (Not trust, never trust a business, we should constantly check them and give support when they perform appropriate actions)
Develop an opensource code editor? Oh wait... github.com/Microsoft/vscode
Release the core that runs Javascript in their browser? Oh wait... github.com/Microsoft/ChakraCore
Be open to community feedback/developers? Oh wait... they use UserVoice where you can submit feedback, vote and comment on ideas for their various products... ex. todo.uservoice.com
They have 1,845 repositories of open source code. That looks an awful lot like they're serious. When they actually do the right thing you need to give them credit to encourage them to do that more.

Sure, pick a few cases where Microsoft looks good. But that is ignoring all of the BAD. Like their spyware they included in Win 8 & 10, the backdoors they included for themselves. Their long history of opposing Linux, to the point of wrangling big names away from Linux, unfounded slander, and the many cases where they have made direct statements against open source.
So they make their own Linux type Windows, which still has a BUNCH of closed source code in it. Their way of being "hey we are supporting open source". But open source means ALL code, not just a portion of it.
Take in the whole picture, not just a few small bits. Micro$oft is very clear on their lack of care towards user privacy and their obsession with closed source platforms.
Microsoft is a HUGE company. Having 1,845 open source repo's doesn't mean much, as it ends up being a small percentage of their total output. Sure.. I saved 1,845 lives last year, but ignore the several million that I took. ?? logic?

Comparing Microsoft products I've used over the years to today's alternatives, I'm not all that impressed with MS at all anymore, especially when I compare how easy it is to use their products and how well they work (cost vs free aside). I don't think Microsoft will improve GitHub--I think they will make it worse. Example products would be workplace communication tools: MS cloud mail and chat (Outlook and Teams) versus Google's (gmail) and Slack. Those MS tools are extremely painful. Also, I don't think Skype (an acquisition) has evolved much at all since MS bought it. I think their OS (bread and butter) is heavy and limited compared to GNU/Linux for both servers and workstations.

If you think Microsoft cracking open the cheque book to cut a $7.5B cheque is them being more open source friendly, then you're missing their very long history of "embrace, extend, and extinguish". It's far from clear exactly why Microsoft is splurging a big balls of cash on the biggest web frontend to git. That's left a lot of open source developers very nervous about the uncertainty over why exactly Microsoft is throwing its cash around to elbow their way into authoritative positions (including the Linux foundation) over their projects and communities. Corporations aren't exactly known for big spending splurges out of the goodness of their hearts, after all. But, it was a very good rundown on the Github business history, regardless.

Microsoft has always invested heavily in their developer community. Github fits pretty well in their portfolio, they can provide a lot. The big issue MS faces is that github is designed to work well with non-MS software.
Microsoft today is very different then they were in the past, but many developer still view them with suspicion. They will monitor every move and jump on any perceived improper conduct.
So the challenge for MS will be adding Microsoft centric features without alienating the open github base. For example, they will almost certainly integration Github with Azure, their cloud computing platform. If rolled out properly, it will allow developers to choose Azure among other products and demonstrate their value, but not force them to (or annoy them into doing it).

    Great analysis as always Tom.
I think buying GitHub was a good choice from MS, computing and programming as we used to know it is evolving, now most of the code written transits at some point on github. Either MS places itself early, or it will lose relevance since Azure isn't really popular among devs.
Docker made it easy to deploy apps and OSes no more Windows dominance, Tensorflow is very popular, AWS is a better cloud solution, what does MS have? Now they have github.

For non-software based companys Githubs a growing secret to keep evergreen documentation either through git, email,or custom wikis. Even for enterprises that aren't open source. For example customers can supply edits to an article to correct outdated information, the Github UI|api then lets them request it be added to the knowledgebase with a clear indication of what's been change by who and when along with tools to revert(undo) changes. Microsoft themselves started doing this process around
with docs.microsoft.com to get control over the sheer scale of documentation that went obsolete every day.

Not gonna lie, 7 billion is such a sweet sound, I don't even blame GitHub for selling out. I would have if I were in their shoes. So it's good there are alternatives. But power centralizes. Centralization is a matter of when, not if. So we'll see how long GitLab lasts before selling out. But at least we have it how it is today until that time.

It's no different for me as a regular user, compared to pre-acquisition. I do like though that they now offer (post-acquisition) free private repos. But BitBucket and GitLab (and a few others, including MS's own Visual Studio, and Perforce's Helix Team Hub) have done so for a long time, GH was just catching up in that. But there are tools/connections specific to GH to make it worthwhile as a git remote over BB , GL, VS, or Helix. AWS and Google also offer the free private repos for individuals, but use nonstandard intferfaces (it's not easy to get one's public key to the remote for pushes/clones etc,, as it is on GH, BB, GL, or VS).

Positive effect for Microsoft briefly touched in the video: in developer circles Microsoft had a very bad reputation for a long time, but with recent moves (e. g. open sourcing .NET core, VS Code) they've clawed their way back into developers' hearts. It feels like they stopped dragging you into their ecosystem (Apple approach). The acquisition of GitHub just reinforces that feeling. So far developers' resonance has been quite positive, though some concerns remain.

I really hope you are right and Micro$oft is changing for good. Because having them in the FOSS world after such a long time being against it makes most people feel suspicious about them. We know of their Embrace Extend and Extinguish modus operandi. If they really love Open Source, they can prove it overnight: if they Opensource Windows Office, NTFS, exFat, etc, (even a 20 yearold version of windows woud do) , then there you are, otherwise they just use Open Source and contribute to it for what they need, nothing else, when it's convenient for them, otherwise they stop supporting, Tthey only use Open Source and contribute to it for their own advantage and interests. Their love is an interested one.
Let's hope they do as they promised and they won't change the rules because freedom is not true freedom anymore if they can say anything about it.

They are the biggest user of Github and in fact helped Github develop architectures and features for them, features that are beneficial for other users and companies that have been merged into the core. Not only was the acquisition great for Github (saving them, most likely), it also is self-serving for Microsoft to keep the service they use working. You're absolutely right in their long term strategy. I was skeptical on the Wunderlist acquisition by Microsoft and they took the core of the application and rebuilt it as To-Do, now it's integrated with O365 and nearly has feature parity with Wunderlist (which they've kept running just so you wouldn't lose features in the meantime). I love this deal and have been seriously impressed with MS since Satya Nadella took over.
People keep complaining that Github won't be open source anymore (hint: it's not, it just hosts free code) and it will be a subscription service now (hint: it already is for business users). It will stay exactly how it is now, which is pretty much how Microsoft products already work, like how there's free Outlook accounts and there's enterprise grade Exchange services.

Honestly I don't think I have much to say this go-around, but I'll give it a shot.
First-off good on em for bootstrapping and doing so much while also keeping such a massive chunk of their business. I will certainly be following as much of their blueprint as I can to have similar success. I especially love the idea of having a top-up option for my future investors. I imagine that must be a very attractive opportunity especially in companies where they expect such a high return (though I wonder how many people expected that kind of a payday.)
For the sake of advancement I truly hope Microsoft doesn't bury this project. It would be a shame to know that a service with so much potential got buried because 1) the executive team exited presumably for the money 2) Bill Gates wanted to snuff out the competition. Absorb them, but please, don't just kill it.
Culture is so very important and its clear companies like Uber and Github (even Chipotle for that matter have failed on that front). To be honest I'm still a bit weary having anything to do with Amazon as well. They now have three strikes in terms of being an honorable company. I of all people understand having a set of principles that seem rather fluid to outsiders, but I truly wonder where Jeff Bezos's line of integrity is. Different problem, but still possibly a problem of culture.
I think I've basically covered my thoughts on this video. Hope someone got some use out of today's response.
Also, added three new subscribers to your list today. I truly hope they keep up with your videos as a whole.

Great case study Doc - the technology portion of many of your case studies is often times over my head (I pound nails for a living) but your examples of the business concepts and lessons learned always teach me many things. And, your presentation style is super enjoyable and digestible......especially when you put into non-techno-geek terms that I can understand like drinking my favorite ice cold beverage. Well done and thank you. Cheers to you from Wisconsin.

This is awesome. It was like having ancient Greek characters explained, and I actually walk away knowing what was said
