  • PRIOR INFORMATION: I am an amateur videographer and a simple tourist. My channel has no commercial purpose. I travel very often to Indonesia and in particular to the island of Bali.
As I am passionate about both video and the Balinese culture (Hindu ceremonies, traditional dances and music), I often film the events and shows that I attend. It is my way of keeping memories of my stays and of making known the rich culture of this island.
Legong Semarandhana in Balerung stage, Peliatan, Tirta Sari.
Dancers: Aan Devita and Nitha Suwitri. Recorded the 23th of November 2018.
Context. This dance was filmed at the Balerung stage, in the small town of Peliatan (near Ubud, Bali), where the world fame of Balinese dances and gamelan music began. Indeed, the first international tour of Balinese artists in Europe and U.S.A, which took place in 1952, brought together a group from Peliatan and led by A.A. Gede Mandera. Since that time, Peliatan has remained one of the historic centers of Balinese dance and music. Two heir groups of the famous troupe of 1952 are Tirta Sari and Gunung Sari, which give show for visitors every week. Tirta Sari at the Balerung stage on Friday evening and Gunung Sari on Saturday.
Many of the best dancers in Bali learn their art in Peliatan.
Legong Semarandana is a dance that developed in Balinese royal courts. At Peliatan's Balerung stage, this dance is sometimes on the program. The narration refers to a long Javanese Hindu poem, a myth about the origin of love and passion between humans, embodied by the couple in love, Semara, god of love, and Ratih, goddess of the moon , interpreted by two twin dancers who perform a choreography symbolizing their harmony. Shiva then intervenes, who is furious to have been disturbed by the couple in his meditation. Semara tries in vain to pierce him with arrows. Shiva who has taken on the appearance of the terrible Rangda curses the desire that forces him to create the mortal world and will reduce the two lovers to ashes.
I apologize for the inaccuracies in the story and thank in advance anyone who could correct or complete the explanation.

I just love when youtube randomly throws cool things like this my way. The music is so haunting and atmospheric, the combination of stiff and smooth motions harmoniously coinciding with that unusual pace; the eye and hand motions, the subtle head shake to flutter just the edges of the flower headdresses. Never seen anything like this!

@Pauly-Wauly Doodlealdaday years to master because the postures when they maintain their wrists and hands at a perfect 90° angle when moving their arms isn't naturally possible, they have to force their bones, ligaments, etc.. during years to be able to do that and have to work like crazy to be able to contain and control the twist their forearm's bones do when moving (it's just like the ballet dancers who spend years in training before going on pointe, being on pointe isn't naturally possible, they have to deform their joints with hard training to be able to do it.)

The story this dance is based in is taken from Smaradahana (Balinese/Javanese: ᬓᬓᬯᬶᬦ᭄‌ᬲ᭄ᬫᬭᬤᬳᬦ), a 12th century poem which is a Javanese adaptation of the myths surrounding the incineration of Kamadeva and his wife Rati by Lord Shiva. There was no repetition, the whole dance sequence was learned as a whole. That’s nearly seventeen minutes of dance, in duet, from head to toe for nearly all of it. Astonishing. I was very fortunate to be in Bali for a cple of months in 1972. I was 21yrs old. I stayed at "Muries Lasman" not sure of spelling. It had small units side by side built in a circle . It was surrounded by a tall private fence for security. The owners daughter was Murie who did her chores on a large concrete platform unded a vast palmtree roof in the centre of the propery. She would go round every night and bless each room wit inscence and pray. Outside this domain was a small side street that lead to a concert arena and I fell asleep listening to Balinese music and beautiful dancing girls telling a story thru dance. It was called Ramiani. Once again, not sure of spelling. I will never forget.it was magic. I'm 71 now.

40 years ago I 'discovered' Bali as an optional stop over from NZ to London. I stayed, coincidentally, in Peliatan for a week, and will look back on that as one of the most perfect times in my life. This dancing brought it all back to me, plus the pitch black walk back to my 'homestay' in the warmth, accompanied by fireflies, the smell of frangipani and the sound of distant gamelans and barking dogs. I was charmed then - and remain so.

Good thing I kept my book lol
I believe this is called "Gamelan Gong Kebyar" and it comes from Bali, Indonesia.

Indonesia is a nation of many different ethnic groups. The one with the most beautiful traditions and culture o all the ethnic groups? The Hindu Balinese. The Balinese are the most original of all the ethnic groups, including the dominant Javanese and Sumatrans. They are the only ones that have remained Hindu. What a beautiful and unique culture and religious tradition.😍❤👍👍

@@irwan7770 one day! It's one of my top places to visit before I die and every place becomes a technological wasteland. Every picture and video I see of Bali reminds me of how important nature is to humans. It's no wonder tourism is thriving in Bali. The landscapes are beautiful, the ocean is vast, and the people seem friendly, even towards non Balinese speakers.

Such important occurrences and portrayals of the Sanātana Hindu kathās still being upheld with grace and pride in an classical authentic form simply is incredible! May Mahādeva's blessings be unto all these fantastic artistes regaling in his pastimes 🙏🏼❤️ Śaṁbhō Śaṁbhō 🔱✨📿
