  • It's actually way easier than it looks! You just gotta know where your tipping points are and how to maneuver in turns. Have you ridden any sidecar bikes yet?

    You have to take a class to ride a sidecar?

      In Virginia, we've just recently switched to an M2/M3 endorsement system. Those with an M on their license are grandfathered in, but I only had my M2. After passing the M3, I'll be upgraded to an M and legally be allowed to operate both.

    Woody, glad I was able to help you. Big difference in the operation of bike. Never been accused of being a scholar for stating the obvious but to me when you don't counter steer, don't lean and damn sure get a different reaction when doing right turns it goes from riding to driving. And yes I have done several thousands of miles with my sidecar although wife doesn't like it because she can't see scenery to the left. Those are the reasons for my comment that you drive not ride a sidecar. Ha

    The problem is that while initially learning the old habits kick in. When I picked my bike up from the dealership it took longer than anticipated due to further adjustments of the Pingle electric shifter I had them install. that went from a 4;30 pickup to 6pm and the sun had set. So it was dark, on a totally unfamiliar bike since a Harley hand controls are a different layout. So two new things at once and it was 40 degrees and the temps were falling and I had like a military wind parka on and summer gloves and half helmet. Instant popsicle. So I'm keeping it slow holding back traffic driving 40-50 on a 55mph 2 lane state road with my wife as the chase vehicle. So I'm cold and stiff and get to a right sweeper at around 55 and realize that I'm 1.5 feet from the center line. I'm realizing that I'm not tracking well in the turn. DUH I was trying unconsciously to lean the bike and of course it was not responding and the sidecar felt light even though there was around 75 lbs of sand in the hack. The last thing a noob wants to do is turn the wheel further to the right which will increase the angle that the chair is on but that was what was needed. That was a scary first experience. I have to consciously remind myself to use those huge tiller bars to steer instead of subconsciously counter steering by instinct that has been ingrained after 40 years. I went with the sidecar because 6 months ago I had to go from a below the knee amputation to above the knee and lost the ability to use the heel and toe shift and felt the leg may not always be strong enough to support the bike getting off the side stand. Aside from that I have no way to put the side stand down. Time will tell if I ever get back to 2 wheels, perhaps something lighter, a sportster or scout if I figure out the side stand thing. I know they make some gizmo with deployable training wheels that are electrically deployable but cant get with that concept. That's a bridge too far.

    I strapped a Velocette side hack to my 2001 Roadking when it was new so we could bring our son along for the ride, it served it's purpose but I would not want to ride one all the time. If and when I get to the point where I can't ride a two wheeler then I would consider a trike over a sidecar.

    Hi. Clarification. I know others have asked the questions. You mentioned you took the course in Virginia. Does the MSF offer this M2 and M3 option at the same motorcycle training facilities? I already have a motorcycle license; also took the Motorcycle Safety Class. So if I plan on a two wheel motorcycle with option of side car, do I need the M2 class or M3 class? I am also in VA. Thanks. Kam

    I know this was an older video. But thanks for making it. I’m looking into a sidecar rig after 27 years of solo motorcycle rides. My kids are big enough to drag around and a sidecar seemed like a fun way to do it. Did you ever buy a sidecar?

    • @InvictvsNox
      @InvictvsNox  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, unfortunately I don't have a dealer near me for Ural motorcycles, which was my primary interest in learning.
      Since recent geopolitcal happenings have changed the global market, I don't think I'll be supporting Ural Motorcycles in any way any time soon.

    Where did you get the side car ? Are. You planning on riding a passenger in it. Using the 250 ? It seems to me that would be pretty undersized of a bike to do that not just power but overall weight etc ? Years ago i had a 400 that i thought was way too light to ride my girl behind me even though she always wanted to go on the bike BTW we lived in South Florida at that time so we typically had the weather in our favour

    • @InvictvsNox
      @InvictvsNox  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the classroom provided bike and yes, it's quite small an engine. Honestly isn't bad at all power wise though. You don't want a whole lot on a sidecar rig anyway.

    I've been riding outfits for years, the bigger the better, in England the chair is on the left. Went round a left turn,with adverse camber, it was very sharp, chair came up,scraped footboard on right side! (Harly Rd.King) It got a bit wild for a few seconds, but gave my appo. Behind a good laugh! BUT it does help if you put ballest in the chair, I found a fat blonde best.

    So... Why did you take a 3 wheel course if you already have your M endorsement? Do you have to have an additional endorsement for 3 wheel in your state or was it just for the giggles?

      Unless you plan on doing serious off road riding don't get the 2 wheel drive gear up model. Get the single wheel CT Ural. The CT is faster and the handling is more predictable because you don't have that spinning drive shaft connected to the sidecar wheel. Also when you must remove the sidecar to service the bike it's a lot easier to take off and put back on.

    • @tp6498
      @tp6498 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@n4zou thats great advice, thanks so much. I dont plan on doing any off road riding whatsoever so it sounds like the CT model is the way to go for me. Thanks again, take care.

  • @Lee-70ish

    These are not real outfits they are motorcycles with chairs fitted .
    A proper chair out fit has a separate chair brake pedal so when riding the bike around the chair you can add drag to the chair which increases the turn speed a heck of a lot reverse is handy but not common as most chair bikes were standard solos.
    My old Matchless with Garrard zeppelin chair was great fun specially in the winter ....drifting is not a new thing.
    Biggest side car problem is eventually it will twist the bikes frame due to the constant side loading.
