Great info: best video I've seen on this so far. I'm trying to learn more about mixing without having all the stems. It would be helpful to a lot of aspiring artists who can't really afford beats and aren't interested in making their own, to learn how to mix without the stems; this will enable us to record using free beats, without sacraficing too much quality.
Thank you for this video though, much appreciated.

Hey man, I found your video here by chance,...great video, you explained things well, and I forgotten that there's recording software these days (I need to get with the times)! Very big help here! (Too bad I'm not a musician)! But getting a DAW is great advice, thanks a lot! Now...just which one?

#askanengineer: could Al comment on mixing deeper voices? In the vocal EQing process, I know you're supposed to cut as much low as possible and emphasize some highs for clarity. Our vocalist has a deeper voice though and vocals either end up too muddy yet full or too thin yet clear. Would appreciate it, thank you!

Love this. Thanks for sharing. Now I just have to figure out what to buy and from where and how much I can spend. Want a synthesizer keyboard for some stand alone fun as well. If I have a $1000 budget what should I get. I already have an accoustic nylon string guitar and some Bose noise cancelling headphones.

Great video! Would you possibly have any advice for how to record a live preformance with an acoustic guitar played fingerstyle with a baratone range vocal? Also, just as an FYI, I play with just my fingers and don't use any picks.
The equipment I use is a Scarlet Interface with Reaper DAW and two Shure dynamic microphones. I have a Fishman Amp with a Fishman pickup built into a Taylor GS Mini guitar. I don't use any kind of DI Box. I also feel like the microphone gives the guitar a more natural sound than the pickup, but both microphones bleed into each other and I am unable to separate the vocal from the guitar and the guitar from the vocal.
When I position a microphone into the amp to record my guitar, and then run my vocal microphone connected to the DAW it feels like I am getting an uneven sound. I usually like to use some amp effects like echo and delay with feedback. I can get some effects like this by using a plugin like valhalla supermassive plugin but I cannot totally match it to the sound of the amp.
Thanks for any tips or pointers you can give me to help me clean up my mixes.

Is it possible to use the keyboard as a controller for other instruments like bass or guitar for example?

Thanks for such a good video. I have a Windows 10 computer and I play guitar and would like to know which program or DAR to use that allows me to have a full range of amps, cabs and speakers, mic's, and many effects to get the sound of many of the artists and songs they play. I have looked into Blue Cat's Axiom and considering others. I know at some point I have to decide but I would appreciate your thoughts?

You're welcome. I HIGHLY recommend anything made by neural dsp: neuraldsp.com/
One of their products, Archetype Plini, is one of the best sounding most versatile guitar plugins ever made.

Hey, thanks for the video, this video was exactly what i wanted to know 👌i have one question, regarding the controllers, can a keyboard controller be pre-programmed to play bass or electric guitar notes?
To tell you the truth i don't have enough money to buy all the equipment straight away but i would like to start and keep adding equipment as i go along...
I'll check out more videos but maybe a video on how to make beats on a budget would be appreciated, essentially explaining the cheapest way to recreate the song you made here, like maybe all i really need is an all in one controller(if it exists or next best thing) to work with the DAW.
    Thank you for reading :-)

Hey Ali, thanks for the comment! You can definitely program a controller that sends MIDI information to your DAW to control VST plugins. Check out this video on how to start making beats with a computer only: th-cam.com/video/CeyjwezYOCk/w-d-xo.html

Side chain explained please. And identifying instruments etc.

    • @LANDRmusic
      @LANDRmusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      From Al:
Sidechain compression is a technique where you use one track to trigger a compressor, which then acts on another track.
Every compressor has a sidechain, also called the detector. It analyzes the incoming audio and uses that to trigger the compression based on how the parameters (Threshold, Attack, Release, etc) have been set. Most compressors just use the audio that’s being run through them to also trigger the sidechain.
However, some compressors allow you to insert an external signal into the sidechain circuit which replaces the internal audio. This lets you trigger the compression using a completely different source. For instance, you could have a compressor on your synth bass, but trigger it from the kick drum channel using the external sidechain functionality. This means that every time the kick hits the bass will be compressed. This is a good technique for making space for instruments that interact either musically or in terms of frequency range. Another example would be triggering compression on a synth pad from the vocal track, so that every time the vocal comes in it lowers the level of the synth to make room.
A variation on this, which is different but similar, is sidechain EQ. By EQing the sidechain signal you can make the compressor more or less reactive to certain frequencies. A common application is to use a high-pass filter to cut low end from the sidechain signal, which makes the compressor less reactive to low frequencies. This can keep the kick drum from over-compressing a mix on a bus compressor, for instance.
