I've been using some of these techniques and it's working great. It goes like this: The first step is to find a sound that inspires me. Then I start jamming with the song on loop. I don't think about the quality, I just record stuff. In 30 mins or an hour I'd have recorded a lot of melodies and chords. Then I move on to editing. I sit down and chop up stuff and combine ideas. Sometimes I'd even play all the recorded melodies at the same time which leads me to ideas I've never thought of. Separating processes of writing and editing gives me so much freedom in writing and I'm more creative. Also an important tip for writing a better melody is writing lots of melodies 😄
"Separating processes of writing and editing gives me so much freedom in writing and I'm more creative" This is the absolute truth! Thanks for the great comment VINAUX.
This works great to me to, it all starts with a sound you're vibing with - my rule of thumb is if you play a single note and love the sound of your instrument, either a midi sound or the way you have your instrument eq'd, you are going to be enjoying what you're hearing and get more creative.
Yea, Thats one of the beat thing I have learned a few years ago, using a different instrument to create melody makes you into different direction but in a good way.. Because every intrument have different tone texture/timber or whatever that differs the sound from even most closest related instruments from each other..In other words Its like hearing different singer but same melody and in a different way. 🙏😊
These are great tips! I like try to impose melody shape outline and then try to work within it. Rising shape for a section and then a different shape for b section
Thankyou, I wrote a song today but I struggled so hard with writing the melody. I'm loving the "mario inspiration" idea. Going to write every song from now on using SMB lol.
Get Hook theory book part 1, only part one from the app or play store it's the best, it solved my melody writing problem I mean I don't instantly become better but I come to know that why some melody sounds goods and also how to utilize that understanding to make better melodies... and one more thing I can add is writing melody is like playing PUBG, slowly and slowly you will get better if you keep on playing, it's mostly about instinct and reflexes. A Mashup of( Base, Repetition, Predictability, Not Predictability & Surprise)

Thanks so much Rodney.
Great video. I think lyrics can also shape a melody if you start there first. What editing software is used in this video? Thanks.
Oh definitely. Should have included that. Isabelle is using Logic Pro X.
I loved this and I'm halfway into the video
I hope you stayed for the rest!
Moral of the stroy, just play and enjoy the process without expecting to make a hit melody 😂
Coughed up a lung laughing at the melodica bit!
Hahahaha. Glad to hear it.
Coool, some fun ideas to play with. Who is the producer? Great video editing, btw, this was a giggle and a half, plus informative!
