    Hey all! I have a bit of clarification regarding the Libra Color's speed. Even though the website doesn't list the device with an E-Ink Carta 1300 display, I read that this was confirmed via another news website. To be sure, I've messaged Kobo directly to double-check and will update my comment once I hear back. Secondly, this device also has a Dual 2.0 GHz processor, which definitely helps with the speed. I should have mentioned that in the video!
    EDIT: My contact sent me a fact sheet, which contains the same specs listed on the website (no mention of Carta 1300). I've asked to be put in touch with somebody in engineering to discuss this a bit more in detail, but not sure if that will happen.

      Can you mark up sideloaded ebooks that aren’t purchased from Kobo? That’ll be a deal breaker for me as I’ve got a lot of Kindle ebooks that I’ll need to change the file format on Calibre and sideload onto the Kobo.

    Thank you very much for this review.
    You are the first to show the Libra 2 and the Libra colour side by side for a black and white comparison and that's what I was waiting to see before making a choice. I do think that the colour feature is very cool, and they seem to have nailed it very well. But since I only read text, I will wait for the Libra 2 to come back in stock to upgrade my old e-reader (Kobo Aura One). The colour book covers look genuinely nice, but what I'm looking for is that black and white text crispiness and that very white background.
    Again, thank you for that honest review.

    • @Maneetpaul
      @Maneetpaul  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      For black and white reading, I agree that the Libra 2 is a better choice. These new color devices are awesome, but aren’t needed for most people. The crispness isn’t quite at parity yet.

    I got one of these for my birthday recently.
    I can see how you might think it feels cheap, given you might expect metal or at least a stiffer plastic for this price. I kind of felt that way, too, until I got it in a case. A good case makes it feel more solid.
    There are two things that I think are important to point out:
    1) You aren't limited to the Kobo stylus if you want to write. You can use any Microsoft Surface-compatible stylus. The one I have cost less than $30. The erasing procedure involves a button instead of the back of the pen, which is a bit less convenient, but to save $40, it definitely works.
    2) Be warned that if you use the stylus a lot, it'll drain the hell out of your battery. Writing is a much more intense activity than reading.
    In general, I think the biggest negative about the Kobo Libra Colour is the battery. You can't expect Paperwhite battery life out of it. But then again, it's doing a lot more than a Paperwhite does.
    All in all, though, I love it. it's color, and you can write on it. It's part Scribe, part Colorsoft, and les expensive than either one.

    I've waited almost 2 years for amazon to come up with a mini Scribe, waterproof, with page-turn-buttons and the ability to write directly into the books... colour is not even that important to me. This is exactly what they should have done! So now i'll switch from Kindle to Kobo (not completely because of my very large kindle library) and see if it will do for me.

    New subscriber here and a new member of the Presently Reading community. Thank you for an articulate presentation without a lot of filler words. I have owned nearly every Kindle since they first came out, with the exception of the Voyager and the Scribe. I have over 1,000 books on my Kindle and it would take forever to transfer them one by one to the Kobo. I read mostly history so color isn’t imperative but it would be helpful for reading maps, charts and photo’s. (I usually pull out my 2018 iPad when I run across a map, etc. that needs to be in color or in a larger size.) The 150 dpi when using color is a deal breaker for me. Fingers crossed that Amazon finally comes out with a color version of the Kindle. Nice to see that you have some Ryan Holliday books in your collection.

    I notice the color libra offers the ability to play Kobo Audio Books. I wonder if it can play other audio books I download from Libby or Hoopla via my local library. I already have a 1 year old black and white eReader from Kobo but of course it does not offer playing such audio books so I listen to them on my cell phone. Instead of the new color Libra, I wonder if a cheap android tablet would offer more function at equal or less price than the Libra to play my borrowed audio books? GREAT VIDEOS... thanks!!!

    Thanks for the info, I just ordered the Kobo Libra Colour a few days ago. I've always read on my phone, or actual books, and recently started to read on my tablet, but honestly, it's kinda heavy even without a case, not to mention that the screen on my phone/tablet keep me awake, also the devices have too many distractions included like the ability to go online, watch TH-cam, and access other social media. I started traveling for work this year, and spend months at a time traveling, so ebook readers that don't keep me overstimulated and awake at night are something that I need as a very avid reader. I'm a little iffy about the sturdiness of the outer casing, but as long as it doesn't feel cheap in my hands I'm okay with it, I'm not known for breaking my devices, in fact, I've never damaged any of my portable devices, even without a screen protection the worst I've had is a light scratch from my pocket on my phone screen.

      They both get the job done, really the only BIG factor is how you get your books. Kindle has a way better store with basically everything, but Kobo can connect to libraries and sideloading is simpler. Other than that, if you’re still stuck I would recommend looking at how they look and which design appeals to you, and the UI, cases/covers, etc. It matters a lot since your ereader is going to last years, so like a car really sometimes it’s just about how it looks and feels in the end over everything. I got a Kobo Libra for the buttons, better UI imo, and my preference for the feel (the Kindle PW felt a little too much like an iPad vs the Libra)

    It is nice that Kobo has finally created a usable reader with a fast and usable highlighting function. Sadly, after years of patience, I decided to switch to a Kindle Paperwhite and a Supernote A6X2: the last reader I bought from Kobo was the Clara 2E, and it was nearly impossible to highlight texts on it as it was too slow. Colour screen? I do not need it when I read a book supposedly made of black characters on a white background.

I've been reading some very old Sikh history books that aren't in print anymore on my cell phone and it's time to get a e reader! Your reviews are great and are helping me narrow down my search. Any thoughts on a refurbished Kobo ? They are available on the website.

    Hi, Maneet. I'm in Canada, and thinking about moving from Kindle (Scribe and Paperwhite) to Kobo. What do you think about the Sage vs Libra Colour? I'm committed to stylus input for highlighting and annotating, but not overly concerned about colour vs B&W. I wear glasses, so 8" vs 7" is a plus. Also, I see that the Sage has a quad core processor- how does it's performance in terms of ghosting, page turn and stylus lag compare to the LC, which has a slower CPU but newer firmware and the faster Carta 1300 panel?

    • @steverolfeca
      @steverolfeca 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Never mind... Been reading a lot of negative comments about battery life with the Sage, and also discovered that it hasn't received a firmware update since April 2023. Doesn't seem like it gets a lot of love from users, or from Kobo these days. Add the fact that it won't be covered under the new repairability options, and the Libra Colour starts looking more and more attractive.

    I purchased this as an upgrade to my Sage. The Sage is incredible, but the writing can be laggy. Constantly requires me to refresh to see what I’ve written. The battery is too small and the processor too powerful for the battery to keep up properly. I understand the design choice, but it’s a poor tradeoff in my eyes.
    The Libra Colour having a *much* bigger battery with the same handwriting capabilities was what sold me. The processor having a slightly higher speed but curtailed to a dual core was a smarter decision, I feel. It won’t stress the battery as much, which should improve performance gains.
    I look forward to it!
    (Also, being in color means I can read comics more easily; I don’t mind physical copies, but I worry about damaging them and my hands have limited dexterity)

    I had the chance to look at one of these in person the other day and I am disappointed as well with the build quality. I also noticed that the demo model, which had only been out for two days, already had a number of scratches in the plastic. I understand that a number of people will put these in cases, but the cheap plastic feel really takes away from the overall quality of the device

    • @Maneetpaul

      That’s a hard choice. The color tech is cool and using a newer device is usually preferred. But I will say that the Libra 2 is sharper and feels more comfortable for black and white reading. I haven’t tested it yet, but the new Clara BW will be a great option for a lot of people.

    Libra Colour doesn't use carta 1300. That's Clara BW. Libra and Clara Colour uses Kaleido 3. The reason it feels quicker than libra 2 is because it uses Dual core 2.0 GHz processor. Libra 2 used 1.0 GHz processor .
