FIX KIA Sportage QLE Mk4 Notchy Steering rack issue

  • Mk4 Sportage's are renowned for developing notchy steering (especially at motorway speeds) and it’s normally due to a lack of grease in the steering rack/box.
    This videos shows you where the dealerships add grease for the technical bulletin.
    only the smaller undertray/shield in the middle of the car needs removing (4x 10mm bolts) and then you'll need a 10mm ring spanner to remove the 3 10mm bolts on the steering rack/box cover which sits just on top of the subframe under a heat shield (it's tight but there's no need to remove the heatshield).

    Thank you. I will admit I was sceptical, but your process was so easy to follow and really worked. All sorted now and the car is driving like a dream. This will be added to my annual servicing check list.

    Did this job yesterday. My car has 85k on it.
    Totally dry gears. Did the grease job as you suggested. Oh wow. Soooo much nicer to drive. Not notchy/draggy now. You're a star. Many thanks. Such a satisfying thing to do !!!!!

    Thanks mate this is really valuable information! Seems a series fault with those Sportages. Wonder if Kia has a permanent solution for this...

    Ours is a 2016 and when moving away it has a dull knocking noise when the steering is turned. Is that a similar issue and I suppose what I am asking is would this process stop it ? 66 plate with 65k on it.

    Hi. I have a 2016 a sportage. When u say notchy steering can u describe. On my motor. The steering when u have it loaded as in u are half way through a turn the steering goes heavy or locks up/jerks for a second before it allows u to take of lock. Is this what happens with u.

      Hi Malcolm, it normally relates to a feeling when driving above approx 40MPH on a straight road, when you go to apply any correction to the steering as no road is truly straight and generally has a camber causing the vehicle to wander, as you attempt to correct you feel some slight resistance and then the steering suddenly goes light which can cause you to over correct.

    Hi mate,
    Really good to find this video.
    I've had a 2019 model Sportage for a few months now, loving it.
    This exact issue came about a couple of days ago driving from Aberdeen to Glasgow.
    I thought I was imagining it, very subtle corrections at motorway speeds there'd be resistance felt which then gave way with the obvious jerk as vehicle overcorrected.
    Is this similar to your fault?
    The car is covered by warranty until Jan 05 but I used to be a car mechanic, I'm wondering if I may as well try this first to avoid hassle of booking in ect.
    It seems quite widely reported now I'm googling it.
    Many thanks again for the video 👍🏻

      Thanks for the reply mate.
      There's a Kia dealer within 30 mins of where I live so it's booked in.
      I figure as it's under warranty they may as well get their hands dirty.
      Plus it's kind of officially recorded in case it's something more than the grease fix.
      Thanks again 👍🏻

    Hi. We have the same issue so about to take your video to the garage we bought it from (thank you!). When you then drove it on the motorway had it resolved the issue? Ours seems speed related exactly as you describe.

      Yes it’s perfect now.
      Cruising on the motorway it felt like the steering was getting stuck (with the lane control OFF)

      Exact same issue. Feels it's getting stuck sometimes.
      Don't have a pit. Gotta ask the garage. Under warranty

    Just got mine in the dealers today for the second time, first time they said there was no issue. Contacted KIA customer services who forwarded the dealership the service bulletin for this issue but dealership said they never received it (not sure I believe them if I'm honest). I suspect they will fob me off yet again so this video has come around at just the right time. Did you grease a bit then turn the steering slightly and grease, and turn etc or just pack the area with grease? I have read somewhere that the area dries out as it's so close to the exhaust.

    • @DavesDiscoveriesChannel
      @DavesDiscoveriesChannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      I just packed it with grease and then reassembled, I think went lock-to-lock a few times.. Doing it bit by bit would probably be better.

    • @DavesDiscoveriesChannel
      @DavesDiscoveriesChannel  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      More likely to be an alignment issue

    • @ads8831
      @ads8831 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DavesDiscoveriesChannel the alignment is ok. new tires. there is a problem with the eps sensor or there is a wrong factory camber setting. many kia hyundai cars have the same problem without the company finding a solution. thank you very much for your answers, I understand that a solution cannot be found with the messages.
