Messier over Gretzky is an atrocity. Gretz is respected league wide, even by Flames fans. Mess can't say the same - in fact, he's hated by quite a few fanbases, especially in Vancouver.

Unfortunately, a lot of people now don’t know the history of the league. I’m 23 and I arguably know more about hockey between the 1950s-2010s than now lmao
70s islanders is still arguably the best dynasty in history. The ‘85 oilers is EASILY the best team ever. But I still argue the 70s Islanders were the better team year to year.
Nowadays, people just look at Crosby and McDavid and somehow think they’re better than all the original players from the golden age of hockey. Sad.

Gretzky is rated too low. He is actually #1.
They call him the best player, but what makes him the GOAT? He was talented, but guys like Orr or Lemieux arguably could match his talent.
He was smart, but Lidstrom probably almost matched his smarts.
It was his leadership that earned him the status as GOAT. When he was on the ice, his whole team got involved, that's how he achieved so many records, he benefited off Kurri and Coffey, who had in turn, benefitted from him giving them they puck and showing them where to skate and shoot and when.
Oh, and he did raise up other future captains among his teammates, including Messier, Blake, and Lowe.

It is a joke that crosby is on here after all his antics like neglecting to shake hands with certain people in the handshake line after winning the cup or spearing ROR in the groin or smashing subbans head on the ice or slashing stetcher or literally throwing fehevary into the boards. These are plays where it easuly could've been suspension but the NHL was always too chicken to do so on all these cheap shots and antics. Plus, he is a whiner. It is also a joke that stamkos isn't on here! So leads by example both on and off the ice whether he is injured or not cause as we all know although he's been quite durable, he's also has a handful of significant injuries and despite this he continues to be a strong vocal point in the locker room. And of course he lead his team to 4 stanley cup final appearances under his captaincy, won 2 and lost 2 and 2 in a global pandemic and whether he is on the winning side or the losing side he's a true champ and doesn't neglect shaking hands with any opponent and rarely makes any cheap shots
