Very interesting. I saw this when i visited Zanzibar and Tanzania too. Does anyone know what made the Indians in East Africa speak Swahili but this is not the case in Zimbabwe, Zambia or Southern Africa in general. I just think it makes thinks much more amicable and friendly when people who live long term in a country speak a local language.
From the Kenyan perspective: most of them were born in East Africa and they also attend the normal schools /education system in kenya where kiswahili is taught in school and its a compulsory subject. Some of them also know how to speak the tribal langages here. I hope this provides part of an answer to your question.

Ro word of advice from a Kenyan, don't buy your motorbike from an Indian, they're notorious for doubling their prices when they see tourists. So look for the motorbike you want, then leave and send a local kenyan out there to pose as the buyer to the same item and negotiate the price down for you without you being there and the seller having no knowledge of your involvement. Then show up and purchase at that low price. You'll get a better price.
