As a megadrive and snes owner back in the day who had both games on both systems, its hard to deny the SNES version is superior in terms of graphics, the intro is more high end, the sound is more orchestral.
    BUT.
There was something VERY SPECIAL about the Megadrive version to me personally and I personally preferred that.
Sound, atmosphere, game play, difficulty, it was all very raw.
In fact this year its my nerdy aim to go out, and buy a megadrive and snes and select few games and build a little man cave and play them on an old tv like I did as a kid.

I'm of the mind that these are games that should not be compared because they are completely different. For its time, the Genesis version was a great arcade type game. The Snes version was a good simulation type game with different tasks to complete. It got a bit boring for me after a while. That being said, Alien 3 on Snes was a good, if not great game that did a lot of things right, but at the end of the day, the charisma and masterpiece music of the Sega Genesis version of Alien 3 wins for me.

The SNES could not have managed the Alien 3 game as a port so made a new game by necessity. It stands to reason the design is lacking in comparison. Alien 3 was on all the 16 bit microcomputers but the SMD was easily the best version. SNES A3 feels like Jurassic Park 2 in space. Very week sound as to be expected from the SNES.

Alien 3 on Genesis had much more basic gameplay and a Matt Furniss soundtrack. The SNES was a mini-Metroidvania with an ambient style and feel, with conveniently mapped weapons for different buttons. Back in the 16-bit era, the Super NES version was beloved and widely considered to be the superior version of Alien 3. The moody graphics and clever use of lighting put it ahead of Sega’s version. The Genesis version is good, not great but solid, and a quality action-shooter. The SNES version, however, has a far greater sense of dread, as you are walking among shadows. But this is typical for Acclaim, who were usually more successful on Nintendo’s system. That said, both videogames are very good and fans will have a fun time.

    • @Godaikun
      @Godaikun 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Great summary, Daniel. Hardcoregaming101 wrote a nice article going into great detail as to why the SNES version is better. The popular opinion has always been that the SNES version was the better game, but that both of them were worth playing -- especially for Alien fans.
Neither of them hold a candle to Alien: Isolation though, which I just finished this past week. Like the movies, you don't run around blasting adult Xenomorphs left and right. You try to get away. AI does that, while these 16bit era games treated them like Goombas from Super Mario Brothers.

I grew up playing this on the SNES and got the Genesis version about two years ago. I prefer the SNES mission based gameplay vs the Genesis "Item" hunt, or in this case, prisoner hunt. Instead of finding and completing the objectives at your pace you are up against a hard clock and the game comes down to memorization and massive amounts of trial and error.

The SNES version was better. The sound effect, music was much more Alien and atmospheric. on the SNES, when you kill a xenomorph or facehugger, you get a nice scream. The faded black edging on the SNES also made the game highly suspenseful and engaging in the right kind of way as you were always on edge moving around, like you should be. The graphics are better on the SNES, they are more muted and smoothed, which suites this setting and atmosphere.
The SNES is a better version. One of the few times the SNES beats out the Genesis.

I think that it's great that their is two different versions of this game for two different systems. Now when games come out on Xbox One and Ps3, they are practically identical with very little differences. That's a shame!!!

    Genesis: 4 Mb
    SNES: 8Mb
The answer seems obvious, in what is graphics, variety of enemies and sound, SNES wins. On top of being more new console, the game had double storage that the version of Genesis, who depended more megabits because besides always use higher resolution.
What SNES lost in the speed game. Ripley looks floating in space how slow jumps and moves, like the aliens too. The game has a slow and rough gameplay, because it uses a switch to crouch, it is very confusing and tedious shoot that way. Among this way of shooting, the low speed of play, and the predictable appearance of the aliens make the game boring.
Its music was good, no more.
The attack of the aliens are more realistic in Genesis, since they appear suddenly, causing a small jumpscare even if you are focused on searching hostages and take some time without receiving attacks.
Its music was epic, and although the sound effects were not very varied, were efficient. Perhaps they missed more variety of enemies by the lack of storage.

I've not heard someone try to make the 70 less pixels an bonus point for the SNES. It doesn't work like that sadly. Most SNES games used up their cart space with (low bitrate) PCM instruments and 15 bit colour.

No caso desse vídeo Mega Vence.

Background graphics on the SNES version are better (although the Genesis version is poorly represented here). The Ripley sprite in the Genesis version si vastly superior. I loved the Genesis version, but the music seems completely ill-fitting... good music in any other game, but completely inappropriate for an Alien game.

The Snes was a handsome and muscle power guy, but the Mega Drive was a wise master of the most powerful martial arts, at least in this stage. Probably the Mega Drive version, because it's a more fun and balanced game.

I've played both. The SNES wins this one in every single way. It's too bad this TH-camr couldn't be bothered to learn how to play the game competently. You have a different button designated for each of your three weapons and you usually want to crouch and take things slow in most areas.

  • @kanzenchowa9868

I think both are good in their own way, for different reasons.
The MD version (which I owned) has a darker more menacing vibe. It feels like an "action/horror" game.
Also the music on the MD version suits that horror aspect. The title music on the Gen is still highly memorable, it's "mesmerising" in a rather odd way. You can't forget it once you hear it or remember it from your childhood.
The snes version on the other hand, is more fun and action packed. The music, and sound effects gives a more action themed atmosphere + the cutscenes drives the game's story more.
If you owned both versions of the game, you actually would have alot to gain from it, because unlike most snes vs genesis ports.. these two games are actually very different "interpretations" of the same game.

The Genny version looks to be an okay game, but the SNES version blows it out of the water. In terms of presentation and music, it isn't even a contest, SNES kills it. Not a fanboy of either console, I love both, but in this case? The SNES version is the better game hands down.

Yup, no ports here. Two completely different games both in presentation and gameplay. The SNES version was more cinematic while the Mega Drive version is the more arcade action game with awesome parallax scrolling. Basically a 16 bit version of the 8bit games on Master System, C64 and NES.
