I enjoy your video very much been on this train twice coming from Chicago to Washington DC I will do it this year from Washington DC to Chicago then on to Seattle Washington
Interesting video... I was on the Cardinal from Philadelphia to Chicago via DC on the same day. one year later... 2020. .. Arrived Chi late and connected with the Zephyr... Also have video posted of that trip.. Nice coincidence....
I got video of your train on the early morning of the 8th in Ravenna, Ohio. It's in my video titled "January & February 2019 Norfolk Southern & CSX action" around the 17:45 mark. You were likely sound asleep when you passed me.
Great video, fascinating! Through this and other simialar vids I as a Brit whose never been to USA am gradually getting to understand US long-distance train travel, the problems, potential for improvement and so on. In this case I've found something to compare it with. Your route seems to be 594 miles? London-Inverness is 617 miles. Both routes are pretty old but the UK one has gone through frequent upgrading and is primarily a passenger railway. It's basically owned by the state even though the goverments get private companies to run things. That's very different to Amtrak running on a freight-owned railway. Anyway, the difference in journey times is pretty amazing. From the Net I gather that your journey was scheduled to take about 17hrs 40min? London-Inverness (daytime) takes 8hrs 05min. For lots of reasons Amtrak could never match that without building some new sections alongside the existing route. But overall there is huge potential in the USA if there was the will, the money, change of track ownership and so on.
From the picture of your video, why were those spots on the Cabbage Car? It looked alright and doesn’t look like it needs to be repainted. It is also amazing that you could literally place luggage into a de-engined/gutted locomotive. Finally, why didn’t Amtrak concert all their F40’s into Cabbage Cars? They would have been saved from a trip to the scrap yard.
Cabbage is a contraction of Cab and baggage. Using the left over space for baggage was just a convenance. It may have turned out to be more beneficial than originally thought, but the reason for them was to have a control cab for a train with the main power at that other end.
4:13:45 to 4:14:30 just shows the complicated arrangement of rails in Chicago, as you go through the former Rock Island diamond, cross under the Rock Island District, cross over the Dan Ryan Line and then under the Englewood Branch.
Are there still any servicable tracks between Baltimore and the line out of DC? If so, have there ever been any plans to restart another section from out of Baltimore to hook up with the Capitol out of DC, like how the Lake Shore Limited has sections from New York and Boston that meet up in Albany?
That's actually the main B&O line from Baltimore to Point-of-Rocks MD and its where the B&O Metropolitan Branch from Washington Union Station joins it. There are no Amtrak trains along the route. You might check to see if MARC runs a commuter line along it if your trying to rail fan it.
At Georgetown Jct. I remember. I was with the Coalition for the Capital Crescent Trail and with that fatal crash I couldn't see getting CSX to allow co habitation of a cycle path on the Metropolitan Branch between the Georgetown Branch and the Silver Spring Metro station, which was our stated goal. CSX actually requires a six foot differential in grade between such a facility with its tracks if it's within 50ft of their tracks. The same problem I think has probably taken place with the light rail purple line through the area. Metro is considered heavy rail which may allow it to exist at the same elevations and be within 50ft of CSX tracks. Metro also owns the whole R.O.W. in the area is has its tracks. CSX has an easement in it.
@@ronclark9724 That's what he meant. He asked if switching from sleeper to coach (AKA, spending less time in a sleeper so not as much for the room) in the middle of the journey was cheaper. It is actually cheaper from what I have seen, and Amtrak lets you do it at layover stops.
Thanks for the video. I especially liked watching the scenery from Washington DC to Point-of-Rocks. That's a peculiar area. It goes from urbanized DC suburbia to the horse farms of Potomac MD almost instantly and then to running along the C&O Canal and the Potomac River to Harpers Ferry WV. I've always wanted to see how the railroad did it. Thank You. It would be nice to give locations. I find it interesting to know how fast the train is going at times. There are smartphone apps that give GPS speed you could flash the cameral by. I know its a lot of work thank you. If you want to get an idea how other rail fans do travel logs I'd check out YouTuuba Train Odyssey 2 parts 1 -3 he must of done production work before.
I used to ride this train in the late 70's. I think the train was called the Broadway Limited out of DC. Do they still connect the train coming from NYC in Pittsburgh?
The regional train called the "Pennsylvania" now travels the route from Philadelphia to Pittsburg. The Broadway Limited was cancelled sometime in the 1990s. The Capitol limited follows along the Potomac River from Washington DC, actually there is a long section of going through urbanized DC area suburbia then Potomac MD to Point of Rock before following along the C&O canal and the Potomac River. They are both interesting routes. I wish they traveled at more modern speeds. It would be a lot more interesting, but Amtrak does move their trains considerably faster than most freights and they deserve credit for accomplishing that.
Seeing all that graffiti spray painted on the back of buildings, walls etc. is quite disturbing. Especially when its done in the USA Capitol, however I surmise it is a Nationwide phenomena. I know it sounds extreme, but there should be a severe penalty for doing it. If the Police see the vandals with a can of paint in their hands, the hand holding the paint can should be amputated. This was a very enjoyable vdo regarding your train travel.
I really enjoyed your video I wish you success my friend God bless you.
Hello, I really enjoyed this trip. Another fantastic video. Keep up the good work.

Looooove your video &Amtrak, keep them coming 😊👍🚆🚅
Very cool detailed video 👍
Awesome video !
Terrific catches/power/meets!
I'm really surprised the Capitol Limited only has two coaches, seems like there would be one more on there! That's one route I have yet to ride.
WOW. Did not expect that

haha most likely
It's almost like Google Street View for the NS Chicago Line from Northwest Indiana to Chicago. Thank you.
I wonder if it's the same NS line former Conrail that goes to Chicago threw Hammond and Whiting station?

I assume it was cheaper to switch from coach to full sleeper partway through the trip, rather than sleeper the whole way?
37:29 I’m usually somewhere at that station, Washington Grove, Sadly I missed this train with the Downeaster unit.
I like how this is kind of feels like a vlog😂all in all nice video, will you be posting more Chicago “L” action while you are in Chicago?

My only guess is that they got more money from scrapping them.
@@beanovids2342 This NPCU 90224 however got a fresh coat of paint and ended up going back into service.

So they told you you have to be in coach?
That was a good ride.

Did I hear correctly at the beginning of the video that each person has an assigned seat.
On long distance trains, yes, the train staff will give you a seat number when you board.

It’s a nice ride!
You were on the train involved in the silver springs collisions despite this was made 1 week prior it's 23rd anniversary

I’ve been on the Capitol Limited before! But it’s not reliable going to DC from Chicago! I remember this train was delayed
What is the timeline where the train passes through Toledo Ohio?
When I rode the Capitol Limited, there were no NPCU's, but one of the P42's was #42.
Can you a Amtrak ride from Chicago to Washington DC
@@HMMRNMN2RI He meant the opposite direction.
Nice!
Where’s the video of the NPCU???
Why did you only go to the sleeper at Pittsburgh, is that a way to save money?
Just the opposite, sleeper accommodations are MORE EXPENSIVE than riding in coach... Duh...

I really like that area of Maryland and West Virginia. Pretty up there outside the suburban area.
Like leaving Montreal by train long ago.

You should ride the r179a train to lefferts Blvd
Marc actually runs all the way to Martinsburg!
Why did he say Point of Rocks lmao
Personally I missed the days when long distance trains would be pulled by a genesis and 2 F40s
I was on Amtrak
cool
Paying attention again at the 45-minute mark; sounds like the cranky baby finally settled down (or parents took the child elsewhere on the train).
no.lie I was on your train I was behind you

Amputating hands for graffiti would be cruel and unusual punishment and violate the Constitution.

really? 4 hrs of boring countryside? what knowledge did I gain?
Really? You came here for knowledge? What a joke.
you gained nothing stupid fuck
Well why did you watch? I enjoyed it. But I got a good laugh out of your comment. Some of us don't want all that commentary BS.
@@FanRailer Thank you for the video. I enjoyed it.
