Nice video. My son just about to go fifo again as a fitter. Loves it. I'm a 16yr fifo wife. Guys, if yr wife is needy forget fifo. You have to have a level of independency. I have my own career so it works for us. You have to as stated run the house while partner is away. I've renovated 2 houses basically by myself. Yes, I'm deadly with power tools, and girlie as you can get. I keep home dramas for when hubby is home. He needs to have his mind on the job. Accept they won't be home for your birthday or Christmas. We have had 2 Christmases off in 16 years. Moved house 4 times without hubby. And lastly for the young ones, don't get sucked into buying the toys. We retire in 4 years time, 10 years early. Can't wait. Oh and one last one. When your fella is coming home. He has just done 14 days of 12 hours a day. Make sure there is a beer in the fridge and nibbles. And have house spotless. It's the least you can do. But that's just me.
Thank you for sharing Caroline! You’ve added some great input here that hopefully some folks will take note of! And you’re a tough cookie to boot - kudos to you, massive effort moving house solo so many times!
Hey Keithy, stumbled across your channel while lookin up what FIFO life is like on youtube. Have to say mate Ive learnt more about what its really like from you than anythg else ive seen. Really appreciate the info you give out and taking time to answer all the questions you get. Top bloke. All the best mate.. Shane from NZ.
Hey keithy love the work. If you can take your time maybe a few minutes it would be muchly appreciated... I’m a yr11 student with no hope in school. Contemplating on leaving to gain an apprenticeship in the mines. As I enjoy practical sides of work far more than theory/office.. My vision right now is saving my money from the apprenticeship for a deposit for a house. Once I pay that house out from working full time once I have finished my apprenticeship... renting that and going for another house. Pay that out and rent it out. Now I have two houses paid out and renting using that money to semi retire using my cert 3 in fitness to work in a gym. Again greatly appreciated for your opinion. I am aware of the amount of hours but I am able to withdo the amount of hours in labour. Cheers keithy
G’day mate, you’ve definitely planned this one out thoroughly! I reckon you’re being a bit hard on yourself about the hope in school, you’ve worded this out great, your grammar is right up there and you have the smarts to see what you’re after in the future. Send me a message on the Facebook (chilling with Keithy) and I’ll send you a detailed response there mate 👍
G’day mate, you most definitely need to vacate the site once you’ve done your time. In some remote mining towns the company can subsidise rent costs, but they do not allow workers to remain at camp for their R&R
Thanks mate. If that’s what you’d like to do, then go for it 👍 I’m not a career or financial advisor, nor do I know your circumstances, so I can only offer an opinion 😁
G’day Natalie, cleaning jobs are usually easy to come by for those without experience. It’s a busy job on the days that workers fly in and out, but gets steady in between.
Hey dude. Just letting you know I’m really enjoying your videos. …. I’m just about to start a truck driving job in WA. I’m single and I’m 47. Am I doing the right thing?, I guess I’m just wondering is it worth it. Thanks for your time.
G’day mate, thanks for the kind words 😀👍🏻 I appreciate it! Congrats on the truckie job, that’s a good job to be in. I guess you are the only person who can determine if you’re doing the right thing. Do you have kids or a dog waiting for you at home? The hardest thing I find is missing the offspring! Being able to do things like FaceTime/video chat after work makes it all worth it. If you don’t have kids or a Mrs, you’re free to do as you wish! Cheers Keithy
@@Keithy_W well that’s awesome..I have children but all grown up and no animals…sorry no pets 😂.I do have an awesome granddaughter but I only get to see her every 3 weeks or so … thanks for the insight it helps and I’ll keep watching your videos. Thanks again.
G’day mate, it varies with each mine really. When I first started where I am it was only Optus, but now Telstra are out there. Other mines only have Telstra, some only have WIFI and no mobile coverage. I think Vodafone fly their own flag from memory yeah? It might be touch and go with them on a mine site.
G’day mate, they are very unlikely to hire anyone for fly-in fly-out overseas. It would cost the company too much money, and given the spontaneous closing of some international flights, this would be a risk that some workers won’t make it back to work after their R&R - a very big liability to a mining company.
Depending on the company you are employed by, yes. Contractors usually negotiate their conditions, including off-site pay. Working directly for a mine, pays are calculated including the time away from work.
Hey mate just got some concerns about bullying in the industry, dont want to make the jump just to be miserable. Any chance you can shed some light on that and if its a bit overblown
Bullying can be a thing in any workplace, but in the mines it’s treated with a swift punishment. It’s frowned upon on any site and you can go to supervisors and safety appartments to have it escalated if necessary. I’ve very rarely seen bullying in over 18 years.
I’d definitely not say that it hasn’t happened, however, the media will cling to a one-in-a-million story if it will make them some money. It’s not a case of “every workplace has it”. That kind of mentality left in the late 90’s.
@@Keithy_W thank you Keithy for your perspective. I'm wanting to move soon as a geo but being frank the stories put me off. I'm there to do an honest week of work and earn my money just hoping I don't get unwarranted attention it shouldn't be like this in 2022.....
If you live to focus on the negatives, you’ll never take the plunge! One news story is exactly that - one news story. To generalise and say that every mine has sexual harassment is not fair to the industry or to the majority of mines around. What you’ll see on the news is minority news. It’s not good to see, but it’s not everywhere.
Hi mate Very good video I want to ask you something. I'm from Chile and I've been working as a diamond driller for 12 years. Si do you think that I can go to Australia WA and get a job in my position ? or for a foreigner that is something impossible. I am going to study online for my Australian Drilling Certificate next month.
G’day Peter, do you mean as in roster breaks or smoko breaks? Roster wise, a lot of different rosters out there, varying from week on week off, right through to the three weeks on one week off rosters. Everywhere has a different version or name for them. A large majority are even time rosters these days.
G’day mate, I can offer my opinion but can’t guarantee a job. The best advice I can offer is to have a look online to see what is available that might be suitable for you. I’m unable to offer info on visa requirements also, I have no idea about that. Cheers Keithy
G’day mate, it sounds like you’re ready to go. I’m not familiar with the process for coming in from overseas regarding visa, etc. so I can’t help there too much sorry. With regards to seeing what jobs are available, there are a few websites (seek.com.au is one) where you can see what’s available at the moment. Cheers
That seems to be a common problem I’ve heard from our international brothers. Persistence will pay off, it can be hard to land a job, but there will be one out there for you.
Hoe's gonna hoe bros, FIFO the fark out of it, then just rent what you need cheaper in the long run, upgrade to a better model whenever you want AND you won't get done over when you come home one day no longer have a house and lose everything you do have

Absolutely.

do you get paid for your days off at home?
Depending on the company you are employed by, yes.
Contractors usually negotiate their conditions, including off-site pay.
Working directly for a mine, pays are calculated including the time away from work.
I'm working in the foresty in NZ atm and looking to make the move to Aus late next year so keen on learning as much as I can about your industry
And usually fortnightly paid?
They all differ between mines. I’ve worked at mines with a bi-monthly (basically fortnightly) pay, and mines that pay monthly.
Hey mate just got some concerns about bullying in the industry, dont want to make the jump just to be miserable. Any chance you can shed some light on that and if its a bit overblown

@@Keithy_W and treatment of women on the mines? There have been pretty horrific reports published recently regarding harassment.

Are U allowed a few beers or is it zero tolerance for the whole roster
We’re allowed to drink after work, but we get the breatho and have to blow zero in the morning. It’s instant dismissal if you blow over.
