Sonic 2 fixed some of the issues you talked about, like not having enough things from Sonic's world, we have Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Super Sonic, the Master Emerald, a lot more of Sonic's world was put into the sequel, another thing is that the Sonic Movie does references as something only someone with a keen eye can spot, meanwhile the Mario Movie shoves those references so far down your throat that it honestly turned me away from watching the film.
Absolutely. I get why Mario's approach would turn you away, it's very on-the-nose and at times does feel quite forced, and although I didn't talk about the sequels in this video, I agree. Sonic 2 is hella enjoyable because of it's increase in game iconography.
As I said, it really depends on your preference, it's all subjective.

As much as Sonic 2 was an improvement, I still can't stand that the series is trying to be a comedy every chance it gets.
And I have no idea ehat people are complaining about with the mario movie having a basic plot. I was pleasantly surprised by enough twists and story beats and didn't find it predictable at all although I did notice some similarities with sonic 2 towards the end.
Sonic 2's biggest weakness is definitely it's comedy. It's comedic pace is a bit shaky, especially when the jokes are flat out bad 80% of the time, I definitely agree.
I can see what you mean with the Mario movie. I think people's annoyance with it is that no character 'changes' in a significant way from the beginning to the end. Which I can understand. Personally I'd still regard Mario's plot as a tad thin, but it's nowhere near as bad as people say it is.
