It's from an album called "Deadicated" which is various artists doing their renditions of Grateful Dead tunes. This is one of the best cuts on the album to be sure. Los Lobos' "Bertha', Bruce Hornsby's "Jack Staw", Suzanne Vega's version of "China Doll" and Elvis Costello doing "Ship of Fools" are all good reasons to search out this cd.
Back when I would take CDs to work, "Deadicated" was one of the two that were stolen twice (probably by the cleaning crew). The other was the dance mix of Madona's "Don't Cry for me, Argentina" dance mix. After the second time I ripped them and burned them to blank CDs, which had cryptic labels: "Dead" and "Dance."
Just waking up on a foggy Sunday morning before 8am. Drinking my coffee and listening to this version for the first time! I’m spellbound. What else can I say. It’s Dead beautiful start of a day. Thanks for posting.
Unfortunate that the Dead ceased writing songs like this one--that would become standards--twenty plus years before finally disintegrating as a "songs" band. Great version. Thank you.
My favorite also. Glad I could find it here. I'd love to get it into my "Deadicated" playlist as its the one i wanted from that compilaation the most...Thanks.
Besides The Dead (obviously) this is the best version of the song. I'm really feeling this. Very mellow, laid back, type of cover. Good job and thanks for sharing this with us.
@DeanAllman That must have been beyond awesome. This is a great version of this tune. I can only imagine the reverence of the crowd that night. And at Red Rocks? Insane!
if you find that live version somewhere here pls let me know, i love live versions with vids, it feels as if you were there, you even clap your hands for your pc in the end lol
I have this version and love it. I also love the live version at Red Rocks from the Grateful Dead covers program on tv called 'Deadicated'. It was on You Tube but was pulled.
Tribute the Grateful Dead CD called "Deadicated" a real classy piece of work, the whole disc filled with wonderful interpretations of Grateful Dead songs.
So where can I find this, it IS AMAZING! I had not heard this before and now have listened to it four times one after the other. Any ideas? I looked on itunes and nothin" Bummer
I have it in an mp3 format, I just don't know how to send it to you.... Somebody? Or I hear you can download it straight from TH-cam but I don't know how to do that one neither... try google?
Langhorne Slim does a hell of a version, more fast-pased and less soulful, more folkey. But still, its hard to do a bad version of this song, its so awesome lol
Man... I soooo wanna like this. Great song covered by a great singer and musician, but this cover is an injustice to the spirit of the song. The elevator music version....
Yep, my favorite too. Sweetest guitar break on earth!
Lyle Lovett really nailed this song. It's my favorite cover of this song.
correct.
I used to listen to this song with my mom in the car I still listen to at 17 when I’m hurting and need some sort of comfort.
I love how this song morphs from its acoustic start and develops layers of tone and texture and the tempo is perfection

I think "Deadicated" is one of my favorite CDs of all time. And, tbh, I am not a big fan of the Grateful Dead.

I also love Chris Smithers' version - just a banjo, an acoustic guitar, and a fiddle.
This is on "Deadicated", which is an out of print album full of Grateful Dead covers. I bought a copy second hand on Amazon. Check it out.
knotheadusc i have never found a new copy either. Got mine used way back early 90's at a used record store. Love it!
My dad has that one. Maybe I'll listen to it.
Also Indigo Girls version of Uncle John's Band--delicious!

@RMMEYCA Yes, its pretty old, i love it too.
thank you for the comment
blessings to you all
I like this one, but Counting Crows also did an excellent cover of this song.
That one is pretty damn well-done, but this one fits the tone better (though only by a narrow margin)
So where can I find this, it IS AMAZING! I had not heard this before and now have listened to it four times one after the other. Any ideas? I looked on itunes and nothin"

Man... I soooo wanna like this. Great song covered by a great singer and musician, but this cover is an injustice to the spirit of the song. The elevator music version....
Kacey Musgraves' "Burn One With John Prine" sounds a lot like this song. I thought she was original... shame
