I have been so lucky to see Lyle around 17 times or so and will be seeing him again this Thursday. He is one of the greatest performers ever. My musical taste runs more towards rock - Rush, Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons and Steve Vai to name a few - but Lyle is one of a kind. I will so miss it when he stops touring.
saw him at the cambridge folk festival 25th year. didnt know who he was...blew me away, him and nanci griffith changed my life that day...simple as that...one of those gifted, naturally talented performers..great Lyle, thanks..
I was introduced to Lyle's music in the late 80s by a dear friend, Jim. Soon after, Jim took me to see Lyle. His music became the backdrop to our relationship. I will carry these memories to the end of my days.
In the late 80's I was on a flight from Atlanta to Dallas and as I checked in at the gate there checking in beside me was Lyle Lovett with his guitar in his hand, hat on. No one else seemed to know who he was. I told him I liked his music. He just smiled, "thanks." I think he was by himself riding business class, maybe first class.
Saw Lyle on TV last week and he was saying how he has never had a "HIT", which is very true.He is just this 'great little secret', that if your're lucky, someone introduces you to... In the meantime... he is a genius at living his own life, making a living, doing what he loves and managing to be anonymous, too! I think he is BRILLIANT in so many ways...
He is a major talent.G he is so great.I am a former Texan so I will keep him as 1 of my favorites. He totally amazes me and I know many of those Texas musicians and he remains at the top.
I have worked as a professional musician......beyond a doubt.....one of the best acts out there....His shows has the most class......He has the abailty to bring the audiences up to that class of respect and well ....well worth the ticket.... Gig-Em 👍 Lyle
If you EVER want to know what a band of pros sounds like, look no further than this album (Live In Texas). Lyle Lovett is one of the great contemporary American songwriters-up there with the likes of Steve Earle, Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp, Randy Newman, Warren Zevon-anyone you care to name, he's in that rare company...he writes beyond genre, and, at least to me, captures a mood and lets you share it with him. And that, my friends, is no small feat.
stewie poohie yes, John Mellencamp. The thing about personal taste is that it's just that-personal. Dan Fogelberg is another fine artist; the list I made wasn't all-inclusive by any means. James Taylor was a more glaring omission.
You know when you are young you just listen to the music... now much older I listen to the words! I always new of him but never appreciate it him... until a couple of days ago while listening to Keb Mo doing a duet with him! I was floored I was more interested in knowing who the other guy was! Now that I'm older and wiser this man is unbelievable!
DO see them if you can. I've seen 'em once and will have the chance to see 'em again at the end of June...they're unreal! I see your note was from three years ago...hope by now you've made your goal!
F Me runnin naked on roller skates! This is a most surreal and beautiful anthem to the institution of Bar life! I worked both sides of the bar for close to 30 years, and man does this take me right back home! Thx for posting!
He's also a very nice and humble person. I got on a hotel elevator with him one time and he held the elevator for a woman who was hurrying with a suitcase. My daughter and I were in Louisville for the World Equestrian Games, and he had a horse in the reining division, and he asked us if we were there for the games, etc. Such a really nice guy.
Your right. I was always drawn to people like Lyle, Tom Waits, Jackson Brown, Jesse Winchester, Johonathan Edwards, John Prine, Etc..not really hit makers but write and sing beautifully and I have covered them for 20 years. Just bringing back one of Jesse's songs now...Closing time..love to sing it.
I'm taking a walk... to go see Martha! I know that all guys on the corner think that she is fine! Though she is a Jersey girl I meet downtown on a train... I wasn't hoping that I just fall in love with her... I told her to hurry up... soon it will be closing time! The night ended and I just wave bye bye!
If more "country" bands would play from the heart and sound like they're in it for more than the money I would enjoy country more. "Country" singers today are a bunch of top-40 posers for the most part. :(
The night she is a true companion They shuffle in They hear the sound But by night's end It's night's abandon You look across the floor Ain't anyone around Closing time Unplug them people And send them home It's closing time Now Kenny he's been mixing sound all evening Sometimes I think that boy He ain't got no ears And Kathy's laughing Kathy's always laughing Well keep on laughing Kathy Just make it out of here Closing time Unplug them people And send them home It's closing time So stack those chairs upon those tables And stack those empties upon that bar And count your money And count my money And hear those bottles ringing You know where you are Closing time Unplug them people And send them home It's closing time The night's all that's left behind You take your part and I'll take mine And go on home It's closing time
I first heard this song covered by the only other living human who could do it right, Lacy J. Dalton. She used it as the closing track on one of the best damn country albums ever, Highway Diner.

I have been blessed to have seen Lyle twice and his shows are heartfelt and peaceful. a touch of sadness. a pinch of brilliancy and pure joy.
Plus he’s a real gentleman. Truly a nice person.

a friend of mine, played. some songs from Lyle Lovett back in 1988-89 through our military duty.
I have been a fan of Lyle Lovett since.
Love this song. Takes me back to a nice summer day sitting on a porch reminding myself of what once was.
He is a major talent.G he is so great.I am a former Texan so I will keep him as 1 of my favorites. He totally amazes me and I know many of those Texas musicians and he remains at the top.

+Bob Noxious John Mellencamp?? I'd substitute him with Dan Fogerberg for my list!

The perfect song to end an amazing set. Lyle Lovett and his Large Band are on my bucket list of bands to set.
Bill McFall you won’t be disappointed

Lyle Lovett speaks to the heart of a city dweller living vicariously thru his vision love life and challenges of daily experiences
Grande Lyle Lovett ( Salerno - Italy)
I want this played at my funeral.
he's by far one of the most underrated singer/songwriters of our time
How is he underrated
He sang for Johnny cash in front of Bill Clinton.
That is not being underrated.
I just discovered this song and the beauty of Lovett's music altogether. Thank you for this.
F Me runnin naked on roller skates! This is a most surreal and beautiful anthem to the institution of Bar life! I worked both sides of the bar for close to 30 years, and man does this take me right back home! Thx for posting!
Fantastic voice! Such soul. I was a performer for 30 years and I know exactly what he means by this song.
I just heard him sing this song live at Fiddler's Green tonight. That was a really good show.
I love this man and his music.
great song and what a good voice he has so many good songs
What a song...

OMG! We have a lot in common when it comes to artists! Tom Waits one of my favorites! I do cover of Martha! I love him in the movie Smoke!

now why does it seem to me that lyle's live performances are one step above his studio album recordings (which are already great)? this is awesome
That's always the case with the great ones. They love and care about their craft. It's not just a paycheck.
Makes me proud to be a Texan.1 of a kind..the best kind.
New song for me. I like!
The first version i ever heard of this was by the hippybilly Goddess herself, Lacy J. Dalton. That was superb, this is as well.
Yes, Lacy's version is just as heartbreaking.
he's the best

Unplug them people.......
Genius!
The night she is a true companion
They shuffle in
They hear the sound
But by night's end
It's night's abandon
You look across the floor
Ain't anyone around
Closing time
Unplug them people
And send them home
It's closing time
Now Kenny he's been mixing sound all evening
Sometimes I think that boy
He ain't got no ears
And Kathy's laughing
Kathy's always laughing
Well keep on laughing Kathy
Just make it out of here
Closing time
Unplug them people
And send them home
It's closing time
So stack those chairs upon those tables
And stack those empties upon that bar
And count your money
And count my money
And hear those bottles ringing
You know where you are
Closing time
Unplug them people
And send them home
It's closing time
The night's all that's left behind
You take your part and I'll take mine
And go on home
It's closing time

@wow13d lol they werent hatin on him, they juz thought it was a weird song choice lol
once i heard it i started laughing but i like it, good song
* I by no means meant Mr. Lovett in my little rant !!!!
You have got to here how he was inspired to write that song. Hilarious.
Kenny Mayne is just jealous of every one!
