Where I live in S.A they are common and very cheap, normal 49s and the wide spools. Virtually no-one fishes them anymore, except the old die-hards. The 500 Jigmasters are more popular as well as the Shimano tld stars however most fishermen nowadays gravitate towards spinning reels.
These reels were used in the 60s to catch Tuna off the rocks in Cape town South Africa, they used to cast heavy metal spoons at fish swimming past the ledges at a spot called Rooikranz. The Penn 49A are extremely common here and are very cheap, mostly unwanted as people see them as obsolete.
You got a great deal on these two beauties! I wish I could use conventional reels but I had to stop because I lost a significant amount of my vision (60%) to Stargardt’s disease. I mainly surf fish and to use older conventional reels in the surf you have to be able see the weight, rig, Or lure strike. If you can’t then look. Out for the bird’s. Nest! With this problem I sold my beautiful conventional reels and began using only spinning reels. Looking forward to your videos on these beautiful reels though.
