One reason that hmong women graduate more is because they are supported by a man who works a 9-5 job. Never heard about a women who works a 9-5 to support a man so he can pursue higher education.
Completely inaccurate. Literally all of the Hmong women I know who graduated college all went to school on their own, single, and unsupported by a man. I know this is not true for all Hmong women but the majority of Hmong women bust their butts without a man in sight is my point (including myself). I think what you said discredits Hmong women for their hard work and sacrifice and is an entirely unfair statement.
@@txhia.xyou didn't comprehend what I stated. I gave 1 reason why there are more Hmong woman graduates than men. You're assuming that all Hmong women need a man to graduate. Technically it is also true that Hmong women need a man's support because without your father supporting you, you would not be where you are anyways.
@@CrayZJo3Davola that is your assumption, not mine. "Technically", it is not true that Hmong women need a man's support because I joined the military in order to pursue my education and received my education without a dime from a man or my father but through my own hard work. You must be old bc every gen z woman that i know attended college as single women (including me, single and in school and work full time). What youre saying was probably true in the 90's and early 2000's, but that no longer applies in this day and age as many hmong folks are not getting married in their teens anymore.
Lots of triggered men in the comment section. Hmong women are getting a higher education and choosing higher standards, which means wanting better partners who aren't gonna subject them to stereotypical nyab life when they already eat last and usually don't have a voice at the table.
One reason why hmong women graduate more is because hmong male is busy pushing overtime to support hmong women in college. And when the hmong women gets her degree and a high salary job she leaves.
Thank you for creating this video. It was informative and I believe will inspire others to further do more research on this topic. Overall, I am proud of our HMong people - no matter which gender or non gender conforming - and our pursuit of higher education or vocation. It is great to see the number of HMong people obtaining a degree increase every year. Looking forward to more videos from you.
Yes, HMong girls were able to see the potential for equity that higher education could give them, but they were able to see that because there were programs funded specifically to help them achieve that. Now, let's focus on our HMong boys, they need just as much help in today's American society to navigate their educational and career pathways.
My two cents is that a lot of Hmong men are pampered in the home growing up due to the patriarchy that exists in Hmong culture. This becomes a disservice to Hmong men by their parents and in turn, Hmong men foster a lackluster for personal growth and development due to their male privilege. Because Hmong women are historically at a disadvantage in comparison to men, Hmong women are driven and empowered by their struggles and embody a stronger motivation to succeed. None of this is anyone's fault; it is just how we have all been brought up all of these generations but now it is up to us to change that narrative for ourselves and for our people.
I know more Hmong men who are in trade schools (welding fabrication, car mechanics, airplane mechanics, electricians and carpenters) than traditional colleges. In the Midwest there are a lot who join the local unions as apprentices and become journeymen. Another path a lot of young Hmong men take is joining the US Military. A traditional College degree and being in debt for a long time isn't for everyone. There are other options out there besides going to college.
High value men avoid women with Nursing degree. Remember that!! You're gonna end up with a low value man or buy a dog and die alone. Facts!!! Great men are not attracted to independent women.
Because hmong boys have easier life than hmong girls. Everything is pretty much given to the hmong boys from the parents. Hmong girls have to work hard to get what they want, so they have the mentality of working harder and studying harder.
Agree 500%. Blind fold and hand pick any Hmong family with an equal number of girls and boys. Guarantee the boys are treated better than the girls and Hmong parents expect more from girls when it comes to life skill labor compared to the boys. Girls are taught at a very young age to fend for themselves aka to take care of the house, family, siblings, etc. while boys still run around playing with their friends even after high school. The fact and truth hurts, but like I said, blind fold and hand pick any Hmong family and the facts are there.
Those studies that you cited do not control for external variables. Had the authors adequately control for external variables (majors), the disparity may narrow. When you use the term rate, what do you mean? Rate constitute a time component. Is frequency a more appropriate term?
Hmong women don't have the cultural expectations like boys do. Sons have to show up to events usually those are on the weekends. That could've been study time. For the love of our parents we ganna spend those nights at funerals, late at weddings. hmong men are so capable but it's the battle between 2 different cultural responsibilities. Hmong men are capable.
This video was too short to explain the question in your title. I think you should've also done interviews with the Hmong community as to why they think girls are succeeding academically more than boys. What are the two genders prioritizing more in their life? Prusuing higher education, starting a family, going straight to work after high school?
Bad idea to leave out the poverty aspect in this video. I'd say the main reason why their graduation rates are so low is because of the disproportionate rate of poverty for Hmong people. Hmong families live in poor areas which means they go to poorly funded schools that didn't prepare them at all for the rigors of a university. I know because I was one of the ones who did very well in high school but ended up having to take remedial classes in college. The ending of this video made it seem like this is a personal choice where Hmong boys just need to make better decisions really rubs me the wrong way. This is a systemic issue that affects everyone including those not in the Hmong community, not something that can be resolved by simply changing mindsets. It's multiple variables like poverty, cultural expectations, and pressures all come into play. Also, could it be that their graduation rates are stalled is because Hmong boys are expected to support the family by also working jobs and go to school at the same time? A lot of my older relatives who made it to college but dropped out told me about the cultural pressure they endured from their parents to "find a nyab" to support the family and start having kids already. In contrast, Hmong girls are expected to do more traditional tasks like taking care of their younger siblings, housework etc. which gives them more time to study. I don't know because the study didn't go into that. Just listing some possible reasons.
Here's a different view: Women are attending college more than men across the board, it doesn't matter what race you are. But the problem is women are getting useless degree such as Gender Studies, Business Degree, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Graphic art, Social Studies and so on. The average woman owes $40,000 to $80,000 dollars in college debt. And as soon as they get marry with a kid, they'll throw those debt onto their husband. AVOID WOMEN WITH USELESS DEGREE AND HIGH COLLEGE DEBT. On the other hand, men are attending trade school or learn a trade skill - mechanic, electrician, air condition, plumbing, CDL, construction, chicken farm and so on, which produce an outcome ($$) immediately. And those men who do decided to go to college tend to major in the science field - doctor, dentist and pharmacist. Take my ex-girlfriend for example, she has a master's degree in social studies and owe $90,000 in college debt. Just because you have a degree doesn't make you intelligent.
Don't take the free ride for granted if you have it but since we are focused on financial stability, lotta graduates are struggling in debt, making the same income as the "uneducated" who went to trade schools or have experience. Seems like college started out for the rich kids with connections and now the bandwagon is no longer a guarantee you'll be well off.

I completely agree. The patriarchy and misogyny runs deep in our blood and is very hard to unlearn.
