Capturing the essence of being Hmong American.
This is so beautiful. My grandfather was a shaman and our family has had generations of shamans. Seeing a younger generation of shamans brings my heart so much joy knowing that we can still carry on our customs and beliefs even after our elders are gone.
It’s amazing to see a Hmong Muslim. I thought I was the only Hmong who follow Islam.
I’ve been trying to find videos on second marriages. Like if a woman gets re married what is the process and how does that look like
This is what happens to true spiritualist in the Caribbean. Some people get sick and it’s because they’re spirit guides want them to work and utilize their gifts to heal/help people. Other times people are meant to pass spirits and this happens because they’re passing different energies through their body like a conductor without realizing it and it creates energetic reactions that their body isn’t use to and so they think they’re sick or had an injury.
Hmong funeral is getting so ridiculous. Everyone wants to do one up the other so the cost keeps getting higher. You need to stand up for yourself or you'll be in debt by yourself. Me and husband are in our early 50's and we have life insurance so our kids don't need to worry about the money. We want a nice clean funeral home which service should only last about 4-6 hours at most. Food should be cater only so our kids don't need to stress about cooking since they are already grieving. There should be no alcohol or gambling going on. The people invited should be close friends and relatives who cares about us when we are still alive only. We don't need a house full of people who never cared about us to attend. No need for casket or burial site because we want our ashes to be scatter at a beautiful site so our soul could travel all over the world and be free. Leaving our kids debt free is what makes us happy as a parent. So, make sure when you're still alive buy life insurance for you or save funeral money for yourself. Don't make your children suffer, embarrassed and or worried.
I'm doing the final project for my Hmong Americans class and am therefore very grateful for this video as a resource. I also cannot get over the line "Jive harder!"
Beautifully done on every individuals part! I did not just totally tear up hearing this tale and the important role of the chicken. It makes so much sense now! Thank you so much for creating and sharing such a significant story! I can't wait to show my grandma this and hear her take!
Wow, Mr. Billy, we need more of this folktales coming. I enjoy it very much with the scenery, which makes it very intense and eager to know more of the story.
This is amazing! I think you should create more of these stories for the youth who grow up not knowing these Hmong folklores. I absolutely love Billy's narration hopefully; you can bring him back and include more representation from the Hmong community to read these stories as well.
❤❤❤ zoo zoo heev heev tshaj li na
Love this!
I love Hmong folklore stories so much. My aunt was a shaman, we'd all sit around her in the evenings and she'd tell us stories about how the world was created, the tortoise and rabbit story, so many beginnings of Hmong stories. I love it and miss it soooo much
🧡
One bottle of Heineken is 137 calories. To burn off 100 calories, you need to run or walk a mile. You got to a party and you drink 4 bottle. That's 548 calories. You also eat, let's just say you ate 1 cup of rice, that's another 200 calories. Your calorie intake for the night is 748 calories. Maybe you dance a lot that night and burned 200 calories. Are you going to run 5 miles after that party? Probably not. That turns into fat. Next weekend, you are at another party, except you're a better drinker now, so you drink 10 bottles. Congrats, that 1000 calories. You're thinking you might go burn that off by running 10 miles but you decide to go grab midnight pho instead. 10 years later, you have diabetes and you wonder what happen. For every drink, that's 1 mile you lose from your life.
Please tell more! This brings back memories of me being small and my grandmother telling us stories. These stories will be lost since her passing. Keep sharing!

Assalamu alaikum🙏
In the 90s i was in a group here in Fresno California they teach us the flute and hmong class
My father served at the age of 14 ... later on he served again as the translator for Asia Times magazine story in 2003 the forgotten freedom fighters in laos... always a soldier n hero to our hmong folks fighting for freeddom.
We’re working on another story about Hmong child soldiers. I would love to speak to your dad about his service.
@AcrossTheMountains i would love that he could share his story but he passed this year ... n reason I'm sharing bc he was a very private person n may not have wanted to share his stories .... even with his mission he did in 2003 for asia time magazine he was quiet about it.
Another thing that is really stressful and frustrating is when your family is not really involved in your clan events. Your clan will not want to help you and will give you lectures and demand everything to their likings and if you dont do everything as they say they will not help. In terms of demand, they will demand many things very expensive and make everything super big and nice so the clan leaders will have face when people come to the funeral.
One reason that hmong women graduate more is because they are supported by a man who works a 9-5 job. Never heard about a women who works a 9-5 to support a man so he can pursue higher education.
Billy, I'm been a shaman for almost 20 years, but I never shake. I know life as a shaman is not an easy road to walk. Especially for those who don't follow the traditional ways of being what the elders always do from one generation to another generation. People may say things to us just because it go their way, or disrespect us for doing things not your average way of ritual. They have not walked in our shoe or taken the path that were meant for us or given to us. Out of all my half siblings, I'm the only one who is a shaman.
The world is constantly evolving, so neeb is evolving as well. Stay strong and don’t let those negative things affect you. The hardest tasks are given to the strongest and most capable. Best wishes to you on your path and journey. ❤
Thank you for sharing this video and doing this interview. What an eye opener and inspiration to us younger folks who may have no idea how to understand or appreciate the traditional religion and shaman men/women.
Hemp has been used as clothing and other things for thousands of years by many cultures.
My grandfather was a shaman. It was always interesting to watch him but at the same time i was scared. I was only scared cause i was ignorant. Now that im older, i wish i had the opportunity to speak to my grandfather about it.
I really appreciate how you explained your journey. Also your shaman teacher is very wise.
I remember the HCC growing up, 20 years ago. As a child in the 90s, I used to attend the classes in an ancient building above a grocery store with nowadays what would be classified as a shady alley.
My dad became a shaman at 10 years old
My mom sister is one and she got so scared when she was doing jell bell on me for my soul was yelling
$31K is not accurate. Average costs is about $80K to $100K
Shamanism is not a religion like Christianity. Shamanism is a Hmong culture. Don’t divide and be mistaken by the the two. If you you even think Shamanism is a religion then you my friend have lost your Hmong culture. At that point, don’t call yourself Hmong anymore. To be honest, Shamanism doesn’t even resemble Hmong culture. It’s much more complex than that.
Very good video! I love it. All of us who are still practicing the old tradition need to band together and strategize a way to reduce these ridiculous costs. I love the many ideas here. Shorten the length of the funeral will reduce a lot of things that equates to money. Yes no more catering to so called VIP guests. I agree with just 1 full day and 1 evening is good enough.
John 8:31-55 The Truth Will Set You Free 31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” 33 They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave[a] to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. 38 I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”
All these spiritual guide are white elf. They guide you through the realm of the sick person.
The Hmong in the States thinks of themselves too highly that they are pressured to make a funeral for a king and queen (ironically, the similar thing is happen to Hmong Laos and Vietnam in weddings today). Sometimes it's the fault of the parent or relatives, who demands certain requirement. When the Hmong were still in Laos and Vietnam, the average person had less than the value of $50 USD and everyone can make a funeral happen. I can understand $10K-$15K in the States, but you shouldn't need to spend over $20K (even with inflation) as a baseline requirement. The rich ones will say, we need to do it, but never think about the poor families who can't afford to spend more than even $5K without going into debt. Your loved one just died, why give yourself more burden with debt. We all know, it's about saving face. But the truth is, at the end of the day, nobody cares because most of them, 90% won't call you, won't ask about you, won't help you pay your debt. But hey, at least they'll be there again at your funeral, right?
You're so right on the point. That's why Neng Chue Xiong yelled out, "Malaqapi" to the other guy, who demanded a bigger cow for the deceased person. Also, there is not need to invite the "leaders" or VIP to a funeral. They offer nothing to the family of the deceased person. Thanks to COVID-19, the change was dramatic.
I only love my true Jesus Christ.
We need to pray for her in Jesus name! People just want to be acknowledged and loved and because the people she came across didn't give her that she settle for this. Also it looks like she lived to please man so sad. There is still hope to find Jesus. Enter a relationship with Jesus!!! Best choice ever!!! Not easy but so worth it!!
Amazing brother glad your choosen keep preaching and practicing
I didn't even know there was a green lady. Granted, I've only been to 1 Hmong wedding.
There is only 1 true God...and that is the 1 true living God who sent His son Jesus to died for us. ❤
wonderful
The Leopold's Maneuvers is very similar and has been documented in modern medicine. Named after a doctor how thoughtful!
Pray you get through your struggles. Christians or not...muslim or not.....shame on those people whom tried to control whom you should and shouldn't believe in. That should be an individual's choice.
The hmong culture is such a beautiful culture; destroyed by alcohol and being taken advantage of by the clan leaders.
My siblings and I are going through this right now
Add English Subtitles to expand more views for Non-Hmong. Great Video
Can two guys get marry... 😅😅
