Completely agree on jim Carrey. Eternal sunshine and Truman are two of my favourite films. I was never a massive fan of his performances in ace ventura or dumb or the mask but his performances were so nuanced and understated - he helped make those films so good.
@@PikeBishop65 I think it was a similar reason as to why Adam Sandler didn’t get in for Uncut Gems, even though he very feasibly could’ve. Kevin Bacon would have been a great Oscar nominee for Murder in the First. That was the closest he's even been with a SAG nomination. Also stunning performance in The Woodsman, which no one bothers to talk about today, but they really should.
I've always thought it was insane that Val Kilmer has never been nominated for an Oscar, or really been in the awards conversation at all, especially considering how iconic his performance in Tombstone is.
Back in 2016, I was rooting for John Goodman to finally earn the recognition for his performance in 10 Cloverfield Lane. He was so unnerving like I don't know what he is going to do next. 😢

I agree-especially about There Will Be Blood. I think everyone was so enthralled with Daniel Day Lewis that they overlooked what a great job Paul Dano did. He not only deserved to be nominated, but probably deserved to win.
Mel Gibson has never received a best actor nomination once in his long career. Never! Only twice for Best Director. My personal picks for Best Actor would be Ransom, The Beaver and maybe ones for Forever Young, Year of Living Dangerously, and Man Without a Face.
He was especially superb in Mysterious skin! The thing is that the film is so dark, but it showed a new side of the actor most people hadn't seen at the time (since he was mostly known for '10 things I hate about you' and '3rd rock from the sun').
With Man on the Moon, Carrey BECOMES Andy Kaufman. It seems bizarre that he didn't get nominated especially given the usual advantage that a good biopic role seems to give. I also really love Eternal Sunshine. (I'm personally less enthusiastic about The Truman Show.) I think the one on your list I was genuinely surprised about was Jeff Daniels. Really?!?! He's been in so many great roles through the years.
Ugh, Donald Sutherland is one of my favorite actors. We also share the same birthday. But his performance in "Ladder 49" was so good, as well as others.
Love this posting! Agree with you fully. Steve Buscemi is the most obvious for me. Love in in Fargo and really liked him in Parting Glances (so moving).
The first time I saw Carrey was in a movie called Doing Time on Maple drive. He couldn't have been more than 20. He plays the older son who's incredibly damaged by his over bearing critical father. It focuses on the younger son being gay and coming out. Pretty good film. Great cast.
You’re also kinda making the argument that Goodman deserved a nom for Argo over Leo in Django which is insane. Plus he had a better shot for Flight that year.
I know The Academy rarely recognizes foreign language performances, but Song Kang-ho is someone who I think should've been nominated for at least one Oscar already. If not for a movie like Memories of Murder, A Taxi Driver, or Broker, at the least he could've been nominated for Parasite since that movie did so well at the Oscars
I like Steve Buscemi in Con Air. He was amazing in that movie. That scene sharing a tea party with a little girl was incredible and damn! He Got the Whole World in His Hands.
Some of you may not agree with me on this, but I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt makes an interesting case: he's been on the business since before he was even ten years old. He's had several stages in his career: a child star, a teen idol, an indie darling, a blockbuster leading man, a writer/producer of its own projects, etc... He's done a bit of everything: comedy, drama, action. He's worked with some of the biggest names in the industry (Nolan, Spielberg, for example). He's appeared in both big and small budget films, and has donde wonderful work in (almost) all of them. I know recently he's been a bit absent from the screen (in part because he's more focused on his family), but I'd love to see him getting oscar-nominated some day. He's only 43, after all.
Alan Rickman in Robin Hood, Channing Tatum in Foxcatcher, Michael J Fox in Back to the future, Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing, Ryan Reynolds in The Amityville horror, Orlando Bloom in The good doctor. Others actors in meny films: Stephen Dorff, Bill Pullman, Christopher Lloyd, John Cusack, Donald Sutherland, Richard Chamberlain, Peter Sasgaard, Mathias Shoenaerts, Jamie Bell, Nathan Lane, Ben Foster, Emile Hirsh, Jack Black, Guy Pierce, Joel Edgerton, John Savage, Val Kilmer.
Malcolm McDowell would have made a great addition to this list! Would have been great to see Tim Curry too, although admittedly I don't think he was ever in the conversation.
Steve Martin deserves the Emmy this year for Only Murders in the Building, but sadly the non-comedy The Bear is in the same category and he might split some votes with his buddy Martin Short as well. His scene doing the musical number in Only Murders was amazing.

Hi Brian, what are your thoughts on actor Emile Hirsch? (personal controversies aside) … I thought he was truly snubbed for Into The Wild, and he’s shown a lot of promise. Curious about your thoughts
Steve Martin deserved a nod for the remarkable "Pennies from Heaven" (1981). The film itself received three nominations and Martin did get a Golden Globe nom (co-star Bernadette Peters won). BTW, Delroy Lindo deserved his Oscar nomination for "Malcolm X." (1992) I thought he was a lock for that one. (Al Freeman Jr. deserved recognition for that film too.)
Vincent D'Onofrio for supporting role in Full Metal Jacket & Men In Black, for lead in The Whole Wide World. Missed opportunities! And then... he wrongs himself by playing in movies like Broken Horses, Chips, Lift 😟🤷
Paul Dano should most certainly be near the top of the list, as he has given two performances in which he came close to getting nominated, Love and Mercy (which he arguably should have won for) and The Fabelmans. Dennis Quaid not being nominated for "Far From Heaven" was a huge disappointment. He was in "Traffic" which won multiple Oscars, but leaving him out for his performance in "The Rookie" means he will likely never be nominated,.

The Truman Show, The Majestic, Man on the Moon, Eternal Sunshine, I Love You Philip Morris and Cable Guy are truly fantastic performances
Excellent top ten list, so many iconic actors that should have been recognized at some point in their careers. And on Jim Carrey, he's been so close so many times, I still think he should have made it in for all of them but especially Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. To correct you on Kevin Bacon, he was nominated for Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes for The River Wild and won the Critics Choice Award for Best Actor and got a Supporting Actor nomination at SAG for Murder In The First, so he had 2 chances. John Goodman got the Globe nomination for Barton Fink and should have made it in there. Great list, Brian ❤

Oscar Isaac won a Golden Globe for his role as former Yonkers mayor Nick Wasicsko in the HBO miniseries Show Me a Hero. Also 2015! He was uh-may-zing in it. Like, seriously, I don't get how the Emmys and SAG slept on this one.
♥️ Great choices Brian. What about! Walton Goggins! 😊 He is also a phenomenally underrated and talented actor.

Matt bomer

These gay actors deserve nominations
Lee Pace: Actor for The Fall
Dennis Quaid not being nominated for "Far From Heaven" was a huge disappointment. He was in "Traffic" which won multiple Oscars, but leaving him out for his performance in "The Rookie" means he will likely never be nominated,.
I've always thought one of Steve Martin's most underrated roles was in Leap Of Faith.
I feel the same way about Eternal Sunshine that you do about The Truman Show….I’m still angry about Carrey getting snubbed for both.
Great thoughtful list that I agree with. I would include a few more: Tony Roberts, Dennis Quaid, Keanu Reeves, Andrew McCarthy, Guy Pearce, Paul Bettany, Linus Roache, Robert Carlyle, Liev Schreiver, Eugene Levy, Brendan Sexton, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Alfred Molina
It still blows my mind Richard Gere has barely won anything in a nearly 50 year career. Dude should have at least 3-4 Oscar nominations.
Danny Glover was completely snubbed in 1986 and his performances in Beloved and To Sleep with Anger are fantastic
Buscemi was ROBBED for Best Supporting Actor for Reservoir Dogs and Ghost World
Goodman definitely should’ve been nominated for The Big Lebowski and 10 Cloverfield Lane
I’ll even go so far to say Russell should’ve considered for The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, The Hateful Eight and Miracle
Carrey not having at least one nomination is criminal. The Truman Show, The Majestic, Man on the Moon, Eternal Sunshine, I Love You Philip Morris and Cable Guy are truly fantastic performances
Jeff Daniels and Bruce Willis
Harry Dean Stanton. Paris, Texas. Enough said.
THANK YOU this!!! I agree! ❤❤❤ Please could also do one for actresses, including the wonderful Fiona Shaw. I think she's a genius...
James Mcavoy, Paul Dano and Peter Sarsgaard are other examples.
Agree w Steve Buscemi. John Torturro especially in Quiz Show.
You should make a video about dead actors who never received an Oscar nomination.
Yassss, John 👏 Goodman 👏. He's amazing.
Mads Mikkelsen! I would say for The Hunt & Another Round! Plus the actor from Tangerines!
Kurt Russel was great in "Swing Swift", "Tequila Sunrise", and "Tombstone"
Daniel craige
Pierce brosna
Both James bonds deserve a nom
Sebastian stan and Anthony macckie.
2 marvel boys who deserve recognition
Mackie should have gotten nominated for The Hurt Locker.
John Goodman for The Big Lebowsky or The Babe.
Ewan for The Big Fish.
Kevin Bacon for a few good men.
Great list, Brian ❤
loved this list! Totally agree with these picks, especially Kurt Russell and would also include his great turn in "Dark Blue" an underrated cop film from 2002. And ditto with Richard Gere in another "bad cop" role 1991"s "Internal Affairs" same year as "pretty Woman"
Adam Sandler also deserves to be on this list. He’s better than Gere in Punch Drunk Love. And uncut gems is an unforgivable snub.
Have you seen "Reign Over Me"? Such an amazing performance. I've watched a few times. And I'm not a fan of his other work, but his serious work is so good. It's like with Jim Carrey, but "Eternal Sunshine" and "The Truman Show" are really great movies and performances.
I'd probably move Kevin Bacon from runners-up to the top 10, though I might have a hard time chucking one of your choices (maybe Kurt Russell).
I thought Danny was nominated for the Color Purple. That is bizarre
Everybody thought that, but if I was a jury I would take out James Garner instead, which kind of a legit contender.
Great work again! Two words: Walter Sobchak. If only Lebowski had found its audience earlier.
