    I'm wondering how true the tale is. Remember, history is written by the victors.
    Also, as I understand it, you can take an existing spell, and modify it to do the exact opposite. This can be to do the opposite affect, or it can be to counter the original spell. In this story it talks about Raczidian trying to cast a patronus to counter a patronus. Raczidian was an experienced wizard, so logically he would try to reverse the spell for it to act as a counter curse.
    Back to the tale, It may be that they didn't realize that Raczidian tried modifying the spell, or they might have purposely put into the tale about having to be pure of heart to dissuade evil wizards from trying it.
    Lupin talks about needing a very strong happy memory. A dark wizard's happy memory might be much different from what we would fathom.

    I don't think you have to be pure of heart, I think you need simply to be able to summon a fond memory that reflects the joy you hold in your heart. Umbridge and Snape, while not purely good, still held residual memories of happiness and love to be able to summon their patronus. Those who can't, have allowed their memories to decay, their childhood innocence to fade, and their souls to become *wholly* corrupted. I firmly believe Umbridge maintained her childhood innocence via all the cat figurines and frilly pinks in her decor & attire. Snape maintained his childhood innocence in the memory he maintained of the love of his life, Lily.

    • @aprilskye7338
      @aprilskye7338 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Umbiges mind was very twisted thou. She honestly thought that her actions were just and fair. Giving her the ability to cast a patronus. Now snapes deal is a little bit more complicated. A potronus is the purest of magic and can't be used for bad things...now Alot of people believe snape was "obsessed" with lily from the moment he met her. And if that was true then snape wouldnt be able to cast a potronus if he was thinking of her. Obsession is a tainted dark love that isn't pure so one couldn't use it for a potronus. So therefor snapes love might have been more of a genuine love rather then a infatuation. And umbrige is just insane lol...sry for spelling errors

      @@aprilskye7338 i don't think just thinking that you're doing right is enough to cast a patronus.
      Coz if it were the case, voldemort would be able to do it as well, there wasn't a bit of remorse for his actions even to the point he died, so he must've thought that it was only fair to rid wizarding world of muggle borns.
      I agree to the original comment, voldemort and Bellatrix and other dark wizards let their childhood innocence and warm memories die and started taking pleasure in torturing and killing people, tainting their memory.
      While Snape could do it coz he always relished the childhood time he spent with Lily and Umbridge was still kinda childish, with that all pink dress and dozens of cat portraits, so she surely kept some good childhood memories to be able to produce a patronus.

      @@aprilskye7338 - You're talking in circles. You're implying that twisted people are incapable of "feeling" happy when there's evidence in the real world that this IS possible. Umbridge gets joy from sick things, but she also clearly gets joy from cats and pink. This is not about whether someone is pure of heart, nor is it about thinking of justice. Neither of these 2 things conjure a patronus. Harry isn't thinking about justice and fairness when he summons his. In fact, in training Dumbledore's Army, Harry coaches them to think of a happy memory.

    Ravenclaw. Patronus is a Dragon.
    And for all the people saying that the story contradicts the books, that's probably because it's a myth, similar to the Tales of Beedle the Bard. Myths exaggerate certain things in order to emphasize scale and teach lessons (in the case of fables). Purity of heart is not a prerequisite of casting, it is comprehension of joy. Thus, I suspect that this is purely myth in Harry Potter Lore.

    I imagine Raczidian must of thought of such vile thoughts when casting the patronus spell that it caused a bad reaction. I think of Flitwick’s lesson 'Never forget Wizard Baruffio, who said 's' instead of 'f' and found himself on the floor with a buffalo on his chest. ' I’m sure that applies with intents as well. Like how Harry was unable to really hurt Bellatrix when he used Crucio on her.

      I use to think that in order to cast one you had to be pure of heart or something like this would happen. But then I learned that Delores Umbridge cast one and I started thinking a bit deeper.
      I think you just need to
      1. Have your soul whole (as in never directly killed someone)
      2. Have the ability to love (Umbridge loved cats)
      And 3. A memory that makes you genuinely happy.
      (Also Umbridge was shielded and aided by the locket)
      The reason Raczidian was casting it was to scare of another patronus. So let me put it this way, normally it’s cast to get rid of darkness (dementors) but he cast it to get rid of light (patronus) so the spell just had the opposite effect. Just a theory

      Because people are idiots, and wizards are seemingly no different. They fear what they don't understand and ridicule what they see as weak or pathetic, even though they should know better.
      Like in the Harry-vs-Voldemort-duel where the only thing that came to Harry's mind was disarming the Dark Lord. He didn't know what good that might do him, and a lot of people, I imagine, would have berated him if this was a duelling class. "Why would you go for that, such a pathetic spell to use in this situation...Blablabla!"
      And as Harry realized when Dumbledore opened the door to one of the Horcruxes with his own blood: Swinging wands and making a lot of smoke and light and noise is more often a sign of incompetence than skill. It's just difficult to understand that. One might say...it's wisdom ;-)

      I don't think she was _evil per se_ - her apparent evil was just a result of her arrogance and grandiose delusion.
      Best comparison would be how in Warcraft Universe, only those with strength of true faith can use the Light - but there's this group of zealots called Scarlet Crusade, which to outsiders can only be described as evil, and they do partake in some rather evil deeds, but in their insanity and despair they truly believe they're just serving the greater good, thus Light still comes to their aid.
      Very cool concept IMO. Still, to tie the above back to Harry Potter, I wonder if Grindelwald could summon a patronus? Interesting indeed!

    It is interesting to ponder if the failed Patronus from an unworthy dark Wizard is meant to consume them specifically or otherwise just destroy them in any number of ways. What other ways might it manifest, like how a proper Patronus manifests differently. They could be engulfed in fire, simply decintegrate, crumble into dust, rot away until they are just bones, be dragged into the earth by Skeletal hands or pulled into the aether by Spirits, for example.

  • @autumngalix4616
    @autumngalix4616 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You can produce a patronus if you THINK you are doing the right thing - Like Deloris Umbridge.
    I've also noticed that it sometimes reflects what you think will make you happy. Snape thought only Lily could make him happy, and thus his patronus reflects that. When Harry cast his patronus, he thought his dad was going to be there, wanted him to be there and see him, and thus his patronus reflected this.
    It is also the reason why so many who fall in love see their patronus changing into the person they have feelings about.
    Also, some very powerful wizards & witches are able to cast a patronus of their choosing, which is the rarest you can get when casting a patronus. It is said that one should be wary of these people on the website. In my opinion, a patronus reflects either what makes an individual person happy or what they think will make them happy. Because not everybody is aware of what they think/what will make them happy and that it is very individualized, it makes it hard to decipher what your patronus will be. People who are able to cast a patronus of their choosing might just be able to shape their own happiness.
    I also want to point out that sometimes when the patronus reflects what will make us happy, it is actually reflecting something the caster has not experienced yet but needs to in order to grow. Like a Thestral patronus could reflect how a person needs to come to terms with a death in order to be happy - or it might reflect the need to comprehend death on a deeper level. Maybe the caster hadn't ever lost someone to death before, and might feel on some level that they are missing something which the Thestral patronus would reflect. Just my opinion though, you don't have to agree with me.

    Has in Pure Evil... yes in this tail, it failed. But magic reflects its caster heart, so what would a Dark Patronus look like. If it worked?

    • @Reddotzebra
      @Reddotzebra 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the problem is less in being pure and more in what the spell does, it takes a memory (which by definition is imprecise and prone to change) and turns it into a guardian force that uses the joy of living as an offensive weapon. Because it's a memory that by definition you find pure and comforting, it defends you against things which try to dampen your spirit or feed off your joy.
      If you are twisted enough to have memories that kindle these sort of feelings in you while being utterly abhorrent to everyone else then I guess you could summon a "dark" patronus, it would probably still do the same thing, but it might have a horrific appearance to everyone else.
      What it sounds like in the story is that this guy tried to do exactly that, probably thinking that it would destroy the mouse, but he somehow didn't understand the steps to take and instead just tried to use a horrific memory which disturbed him instead, so it didn't defend him, it attacked him instead.

    I find it interesting that patronus represent animals while dementors represent humans.
    Also, I think because of the nature of the spell is why it back fires on dark casters as the casters are the closest dark entity in the spell.
    So it isn't that it has gone wrong but rather it works TOO WELL that it just targets the caster.
    If that is the case, then we would find patronus to have its offensive use and not simply to just ward off dementors as we know that it can straight up destroy a dark wizard.

      @@pocketer_5257 There's nothing wrong with Ravenclaw, it makes since because I'm a writer and enjoy studding history. Hufflepuff just speaks to me more then Ravenclaw. I always imagined mine would be a lion, fox, fluffy dog, or a bird of sorts. But I've come to know myself more in the last few years, and I wouldn't be surprised if I would be faced with a ghostly version of myself from back when I felt more pure and alive. It would be a strange comfort, but saddening too.

  • @wafflingmean4477
    @wafflingmean4477 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I do wonder, if a Patronus is cast by channelling happiness, perhaps Raczidian wasn't actually attempting a Patronus? I mean think about it, there's a village down the road who constantly train in magic designed to thwart your guardians, and they are uncomfortable with the magic you practice. Raczidian definitely would have been researching ways to counter a Patronus. Perhaps his solution was to create an anti-Patronus. A spell that channelled all of your sadness, anger, envy, pain and even sadism? When concentrated, those are all highly destructive emotions. Perhaps that is what those maggots truly were, but Raczidian was unable to control such a highly volatile spell, especially since Patronus' appear to have some intelligence for the brief time they are cast. And being true to its nature, this anti-Patronus instantly betrayed and murdered its caster.

    Delores Umbridge was not pure of heart but she was able to cast it. I think, what's required to cast a patronus is your most joyful memory. Every wizard and witch must have it, even the evil ones. Voldemort, Bellatrix, Dolohov, etc. have not been shown casting it in the series because there's not a need for them to do it.
