Thank you for a clear concise and well presented tutorial. As someone who has just bought a scan N cut, this is exactly what I need to figure out what to do. Thank you again.

Thanks for this informative vid John. I bought the We R Memory Keepers foil pen when it came out - by then my CM900 was out of warranty - and used it to produce 100 Wedding Invitations with words and a small heart cascading confetti design with open and filled hearts.

Thanks for this John. I bought an official foiling starter kit for my CM900 a while ago when it was on offer for a silly price. I've never used it because it came with no instructions whatsoever and I missed the TV program which told you how to use it! I just remember something about the machine having to draw the design in a particular way to avoid smudging the glue and I panicked! 😂

I have the last and cheapest option and it works quite well. Most of the time I print what I need from my computer then foil it in the laminator without using scan and cut.

I have used 3 of the methods you have highlighted but instead of the minc toner sheets I use the tattered lace toner sheets and have die cut shapes out then foiled. I have the brother foiling kit and the we are memory keepers foil quill. I also have a mono laser printer to print out designs and foil with toner reactive foil.

A laser printer or toner based copier can handle fine details for drawings, lettering, etc. It should be a whole lot cheaper to print your own "toner sheets" versus buying them ready made.

I have the Brother kit and the quill. I prefer the quill. Just a thought, all ways require replacing the foil. Not sure of the price of the different types of foil to know if one is cheaper than another.

If I were going with the official kit I would use the generic glue pens as refills. They're the same pens with different branding on the barrels. What I'm interested in is can the SDX machines be used to foil onto ribbons? Using the fabric mat and high tack fabric support sheets would either or both of those be strong enough to hold ribbons in place? If so what width, type of ribbon material, length of ribbon has the greatest success rate? If this can't be done then I'd need to buy a dedicated ribbon foiling machine. While those are much faster you can only load up to 3-4 strips of ribbon for a single color foiling print. The foil colors can be swapped but it takes a bit of time to swap one roll of foil material to insert a new roll, feed it through the rollers, and get it ready to print onto the same ribbons. The same hassle is true for customers who want different colors of ribbons loaded into a dedicated foil ribbon printer like the Ribbon Writer.

If you are doing this for customers, I would go with a dedicated piece of equipment. The Scan N Cut is a good all-round hobby machine but for commercial quality prints everytime you would be better off with a dedicated system.

@GentlemanCrafterUK if I want to foil a design I have made of words and flowers how do I get it into Design Space or onto the machine to foil it? Thanks.

Design Space is for Cricut. I'd suggest looking for a tutorial on TH-cam for that.
