  • Blizzard- 1 to 2 feet of snow, high winds, lows in single digits F predicted. I decided to go into the woods and camp in it. No tent. So I'd build a primitive shelter to survive.
    00:00 Intro
    00:27 Fell dead pine trees. Cut logs to length.
    00:34 Clearing snow where the shelter will be set up.
    01:33 Setting up the frame (logs).
    02:40 Building the log roof
    05:22 Building the walls
    07:42 Break time. (Had to leave after this).
    08:14 Returning to the site the next day.
    08:50 Some snow on the roof.
    10:15 Shoveling in front of the shelter.
    10:36 Break time
    11:14 Shoveling snow onto the roof (for insulation)
    12:30 Reinforcing and sealing the walls
    13:41 High winds
    14:00 Welcome to my happy home
    14:18 Going for a walk. Scouting around.
    16:13 Gathering birch bark
    17:30 Walking back to the shelter
    18:20 Sealing cracks in the roof with ice and snow
    19:20 Night fall. Shoveling in front of the shelter.
    21:13 Calling it a day. Going into the shelter to sleep for the night.
    There was not as much snow as predicted. Maybe 8 inches. (It was hard to tell because there was so much drifting). Low was 2 degrees F. High winds.
    22:37 Getting up in the morning
    22:48 Sunrise
    23:04 Views of the shelter and the site after the storm. The snow had stopped, but there were still high winds. Bitter cold.
    24:37 Encouraging word- "The Blizzard"

      Thank you so much. When I was starting my channel, I looked around and thought about what kind of content I would like to watch. Then I tried to provide things that people want, but don't exist or are scarce or hard to find. There is a lot of bushcraft and survival content online, but not usually from a Christian perspective. That seems strange to me since the culture IRL is very spiritual, and has been for centuries. Thanks again & God bless.

      Thank you. I'd love that, too. One of things to consider is logistics. I'm a family man and also I'm the caregiver for a handicapped person. So it boils down to finding the time and having the money. This might not be the place to get too deep into details. Wow! That supporting tree was bent at an almost impossible angle! Still, it did its job well.

    • @DougShoeBushcraft
      @DougShoeBushcraft  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That log was an aspen tree that had the top broken and bent over in a storm. But the top wasn't severed (it was still connected) so it healed in that position and the tree kept growing. Eventually the 90 degree angle became very strong. I like using logs like this, and also Y shaped logs in my structures. In that way the weight of the roof is on the timbers. If done correctly, they can be very strong. I thought more people would notice and comment on this unusual log.

    • @oleggorky906

      @@DougShoeBushcraft The tree is definitely worth a few comments. It’s amazing the amount of small details in The Good Lord’s creation. He definitely does move in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform. And to think that he knew from all eternity past that you would need that tree one day, with it’s incredible durability! 😄👍

    Once again, Doug gets it done: just not the way I would. I guess that timber was what was available. He had to manhandle way oversized baulks of wood to enclose a small space. I would have made a raised bed first thing and then added a lighter shelter. At least Doug knew where to find any amount of wood for his fire! I LIKE the way he brings a snow shovel along. He did a fine job of piling up snow to make a protective wall on the windward side of things.

    I watched this one after the frozen lighter video. That's one solid shelter you built there. Some might say it was overkill, but I like overkill when it comes to structural things. Ultimately you have no way of knowing exactly how much snow will be dumped on you, or how much weight is involved. I watched some young fellow on TH-cam yesterday that made a flimsy timber frame and wrapped it in cling film, Ceran wrap, or whatever you call it over there, and he stated that there was about 2 feet of snow forecast. To make me cringe even further, to say that his knot tying skills left a lot to be desired would be a gross understatement. An old saying "if you can't tie knots, tie lots" came to mind. I was sooo tempted to say something but kept my mouth shut. He was sleeping in a hammock and it appeared that there was no under quilt. Anyway, her survived the night and the next morning, the snowfall didn't look like it was and more than the day he arrived. I couldn't help thinking though.... what chance would you have if a shelter gave way with a couple of tons of snow on it, while you were under it? Not much is my guess. So... loved your rock solid shelter. 😀

    • @DougShoeBushcraft
      @DougShoeBushcraft  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm trying to demonstrate different kinds of shelters. The weatherman said 1 to 2 feet of snow, and also very high winds. We "only" got 8 inches of snow (I would say- but with so much drifting it was hard to know). But the winds were very high. A flimsy shelter wouldn't have held up. Yes it was overkill. -almost a bunker. Yes you never know what the weather will be. We could have had more snow than predicted.

    • @oleggorky906
      @oleggorky906 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have also seen some of those cling film builds. One dude even had a fire 🔥 inside it! Can’t help thinking that that is just asking for trouble.
