What I like about making my own fly is I preferred to make then non uniform as I've had more takes and netted more than perfect looking shop bought ones
I'm 60 years old and still have a spool of green/black thread as a keepsake in my tackle box. My Pop's used it to make Flys, in the 1940's, for fly fishing in the Midwest U.S.

Love to see the new fishing styles. Fly-fishing was one that always seems so hard to pick up. Also I think the fly you were using (that you couldn't name) is either a mayfly or caddisfly nymph. They're big, juicy buggers that fish love to eat as these nymphs are fully aquatic during that life stage. Really cool to look at too!
what a spot! good job with fly rod mate! Im a flyfisher so glad 2 see you casting the fly mate ... a little tip - when you handle fresh water fish that your releasing again dont handle them with dry hands cus they will lose more of the slime coating the fish. it kinda hurts them
Trout are my absolute FAVORITE fish to catch! Pound for pound they fight harder than any other fish out there. At least fresh water. Trout we also some of my favorite fish to eat! Throw a little Lemmon pepper seasoning on one or a sweet blend with brown sugar and you’re in for some of the best feed of your life! I love a good striped bass too. Tight lines friend!🤟🏻

It's called water-loading the line. It's a very easy way for beginners to get some distance.
Plus, it's THE coolest when they launch out of the water to catch the fly!
