Man I missed the Opener this year because all I heard was that everything was all frozen. Well im going up in a couple of weeks, hopefully It will be good. Thanks for the video
Awesome video Jorge! Thanks for the inspiration! Nice job with the cuttie at Grant. The views are awesome even if the fishing was a little slow. Thanks for bringing us along on the trip! Tight lines bro !! 👍💪🐟🐟
Being in Nor Cal I often forget how many mountain ranges are actually in So Cal and that you get snow as well! Beautiful area and nice catches! Tight lines!
This video was at the eastern sierra opener but we do have some lakes in our mountains also. I will be fishing one of them next week. They got a bunch of snow this winter but by now I think most of it is gone down here.
Thanks for hte video, usually you make a couple of trips up there and upload but it looks like you only did the opener this year? Good catching never the less
Great video Jorge. I was also at Bridgeport Reservoir Saturday morning. We were on the muddy shore at 0430am. It was a mud hole as you know. I'm in Hesperia and just getting into float tubing. I've learned a lot from your video's and watching you. We've warmed up, do you ever tube Gregory, Grass Valley or any of the mountain lakes. How would you recommend a beginner start off? Again thanks for the great info.
Hi Brian glad you enjoyed the video! I have tubed at Lake Gregory, Silverwood, and Big Bear. Green Valley Lake doesn’t allow float tubing. For a beginner I definitely recommend launching from water shallow enough to stand in before paddling into deep water. I like launching where I have maybe something to rest the tube against while I get into the tube and setup my fins and get situated before I can paddle off. Lake Gregory I would say might be the easiest to give it a shot. Silverwood not bad but can get windy and make paddling a challenge. At silverwood Cleghorn May be a good option to launch. Big bear would be more challenging as it is a bigger lake, can get windy, and have to watch for boats. Hope that helps!
I didn’t visit any lakes in Mammoth. From what I know the road headed up hasn’t been cleared yet. Would have to hike in. I heard some people were ice fishing Lake Mary. I don’t believe any of the lakes are thawed out yet at Mammoth Lakes loop. But already looks like most lakes are almost thawed out in June Lake Loop. Convict Lake has also thawed out a lot since I left last weekend. By the time you head up I would guess those would be great options.
Question on jig technique. When you are jigging and reeling, is the goal for the jig to bounce off bottom or to float during retrieval? I have generally bounced off bottom but see that you may be using the jig like a standard lure at times and keeping it off the bottom. Great content by the way! Headed up to Silver in a few weeks.
I will fish the jigs at different depths depending on where the fish are at. I like to say to keep the jig in the “zone” sometimes they are crusing under the surface so I will cast and right away start jigging. If they are lower I will let the jig sink for maybe 10 seconds or 20 seconds, 30 seconds etc., then a slow reel and bounce the tip of the rod all the way back in. Once I find the zone where I’m getting bit I will try to keep fishing the jig the same way. Polarized glasses help me also sometimes to see the fish cruising around or to see any structure under the water. Sometimes I will cast out in front of big boulders or close to logs.
@@socaltroutcartel574 Thanks man. I noticed your technique and retrieval speed change a bit throughout the video and had to ask. Appreciate the explanation.
It wasn’t too cold there but I like cool temperatures lol, some might say it was cold. I was also using a 0 degree sleeping bag and one night I didn’t even zip it up. I think it got down to about 35 degrees at night.
Love the video. Subbed! Question about your phenix mirage. What is the length you are using? Which one in your opinion is better for the 2 piece. The 7’1 or 7’8 for mini jigs? Thanks!
Thanks appreciate it! 🙏 In my opinion if you will be using it to cast from shore I would say the 7’8” two piece will give you a little more casting distance. If you will be fishing from a boat or float tube, or rivers and creeks more then I would say the 7’1”. If you happen to be in Southern California area I have a shop in Ontario that you can come see both rods and see what you might like better. For mini jigs you’re on the right track the mirage is definitely the go to.
This trip I was using 1/16 oz because I was trying to fish deeper and it was a bit windy at times. But when it’s not windy I’m usually throwing the minnows on 1/32 oz.
Jorge, I forgot I have a question for you. I see you're using a pretty small spinning reel for most of the video. I think you are using braid line (but I'm not sure). Do you have problems with frequent line backlash (birds nests) when you fish the combination of small spinning reel and braid. I use small spinning reels and mono, and if I do a lot of casting (such as fishing with lures) I will almost always get backlash at some point during the session. Yeah, I don't put too much line on the spool, I always use a swivel, and I match the direction of the line coming off the new line spool with the rotation direction of my reel bail, but I still have problems. I even warm the line before putting it on the reel. The only way I've found to avoid backlash is when I cast and close the bail, I have to manually pull the slack out of the line on the spool of the reel with my right hand before I start the retrieve. It's a very clumsy and awkward way to fish. Any suggestions? Thanks.
From time to time I get wind knots with my braid but mostly on windy days or if the braid is starting to get old. I fish size 1000 reels on all my setups for trout and I am running either 4 lb or 5 lb Phenix braid. One suggestion for spooling line on your reel if you don’t do already (especially for monofilament) would be make sure the line is coming off the spool counterclockwise as you reel it into your reel. That way it will have the same memory while it is on your reel and it won’t fight against itself when you cast if that makes sense. Kind of hard to explain, I may have to make a video on it 😮 but hope that helps!
@@socaltroutcartel574 Yeah, I've seen videos explaining that, and I'm already doing that, but still having problems. I'm wondering if braid is less susceptible to this problem versus mono. I'm running 4 lb mono. Thanks for your suggestions!
Have you tried 2 lb mono? I used to use izorline xxx 2 lb a lot. If you’re throwing 1/32 oz jigs a lot I think 2 lb will be easier to cast than 4 lb. If you want to try the braid out I would suggest the 5 lb Phenix braid as it has very little memory, casts really easy. The 4 and 6 lb braid from Phenix is coated which makes it a bit stiffer than the uncoated 3 and 5 lb Phenix braid. If you go with the braid I definitely recommend the 5 lb
Miss seeing your videos man!! You and Trout Made are the top 2 best mini jig anglers on the Tube! 🔥 surprised you went to Bridgeport reservoir since it was like Nesquik and low but glad you got out of there because you can see the whirlpool where they are flushing out the water from the highway but glad you didn’t get sucked in lol for sure the fishing will pick up once it gets warmer and all the snow is melted so I better see some more vids man 😂 respectfully lol. Also what’s the action on your mini jig rod? Seems like slow action because it seems very flimsy.
Haha yeah getting sucked down into the reservoir would not be fun lol 😂 And I do plan to make s few trips this season! The rod I would say is a moderate/fast action ultralight. It’s a custom rod I built with a 3 weight fly blank 7’6” two piece
Thanks for showing the area around and the good thing you were able to catch a couple. I must say, can you put your camera on your hat or something as we miss all of the action when the camera is on your chest. Love all of your videos especially the 1 you took your girl with you and she out fished you. Lol.
I will see what I can do about my camera angle! I would like to get a second camera setup behind or to the side of me while I’m fishing. Problem is sometimes I live around a lot but maybe I will try on my hat. And Glad you enjoy the vids! 🙏
I was, only because I had taken one rod down with me or else I have been throwing it on my rod setup with 4 lb izorline xxx. But worked out with my 4 lb braid and a 4 lb fluorocarbon leader
@@socaltroutcartel574 I’ve gotta head up there soon… feel like it’ll be the same idea for tons of people though haha 😅. Thanks for letting us tag along on your trip!

Good recording. Thank you for sharing 👍🙂

Yes very beautiful out there right now! Enjoy your trip to Bishop! Should be awesome out there.

I was up there too I fished grant we caught fish, but it was super slow, and you had to grind to catch the fish nothing like last year.
Awesome footage bro wish I could've gone .
We definitely gotta get out there soon
Twin Lakes looks amazing. Love the area. Thanks for the video! Can’t wait to get out there! How far were you able to get up Bishop Canyon?
I actually never went past intake 2, not sure how far it goes up right now. But some places seem to be thawing out pretty quickly now.

Also do you know why the lake was so low? I'd think with all the snowmelt it would have been higher?
