Never get tired of watching this early Crawford film. It's surprising to read that it received mix reviews and disappointed Joan fans in 1933. But 90 years later, her performance has taken on a special burnish and golden patina. It's a textual film narrative that can be read in many ways. Crawford is so right for this part, tough, resilient and vulnerable----like the star herself. I suspect she truly identified with Sadie. One cheers for Sadie when she stands up to Davidson's bully and calls him out on his Christian hypocrisy. I'm on my way to hell !
Critics and fans probably disliked this performance because it is so raw, a companion to Bette's Of Human Bondge perhaps. But, it seems relevant today for that very reason. As time goes on, it is clear that Crawford was one of the most talented and compelling of golden age stars.
My absolute fav Crawford film. Seen this film more than any other. Love it! "sat around playing solitaire all afternoon.trying to deside to have tunie fish or beans._.And the beans won" what a line..
