- Sniff 'n' the Tears is a British rock band best known for their 1978 song "Driver's Seat", a hit in many countries (including #15 on the American Billboard Hot 100 chart). The exception was the UK itself where a problem with EMI's pressing plant meant that the single was not available following the band's appearance on Top of the Pops and it peaked just outside the Top 40.
Sniff 'n' The Tears are led by singer/songwriter Paul Roberts, the band's sole constant member. Roberts, a noted painter, is also responsible for painting all of the band's album covers.
My favorite song of all time, here is a Paraguayan listening to it this Saturday, November 11, 2023 at 11 pm driving down 5th Avenue of New York, priceless.

Have you looked up " Driver Seat Remix "? there are 3 remix versions now recently released.....very cool all 3 of them.
Pink Floyd based an entire double LP album (The Wall) around essentially 2 songs. There is enough sound and depth in "Drivers Seat" to arrange it dozens of different ways, and thats before scaling the tempo or bringing in different instrument sections.
One of best songs ever written.

I do believe it charted here in the United States in the late-summer/early-fall of 1979 (#15 for two weeks on the Hot 100, on September 29-October 6).

the 2nd verse should have been " gonna dance the night away" or "gonna dance my blues away" then have to change " news is blue" to "the news was true"

I think Jenny had been through a lot.
Listening to this song for the last 40 years and for the first time just saw all the lyrics together. My first thought then was this song doesn't have anything to do with driving a car. I feel this is about an introduction leading to an addiction and dealing with life the best way you can. So if you're regularly getting out and doing a little jiving on a Saturday night, as I did in the late 80's and all the 90's then I would think, wow, you're doing all right. Being in the driver's seat would mean being in control of the occasion or your life. To not be in the "driver's seat" is uncool, unpopular and unmanageable. If you want to have a good time or be in control you need to be in the driver's seat. I love it! Just my opinion of course. My favourite verses are, "come what may, gonna dance the day away" Reckless lyrics right there which I'm guilty of. Lol
