This is NYC. All the issues he is expressing are city-sanctioned, not federal. The country is big; please don’t see this small slice of New York’s problems as representative of the country as a whole. With all due respect, that’s what stupid people do who spread misinformation and look to anything to help justify their hatred/ignorance.
The things witnessed in the video are certainly distressing and should not be happening, but the issues here are, ultimately, caused by the growing wage gap and lowering of the GDP, as with most issues in this country. We are just poors fighting amongst each other while the rich sit in their glass castles and create policies that further divide us. We wouldn’t have homelessness, homeless vets, starving people, etc.. if wealth and opportunity was actually distributed fairly.

I used to live in New Orleans. After dark, gas stations lock their doors and do business through a window, a security window. You can buy whatever, the clerk will go and get it for you, but you can not enter the store. I imagine NYC is heading in that direction.

So someone could steal a $2000 dollar bike and still not get charged with a felony as a lawyer could argue it's not worth $950 when sold for cash on Craigslist/to a drug dealer.

What if NYC businesses just raised the prices of everything in the stores +$1000 but give $1000 discount. Would that make the theft over $1000 since the product retails for over a $1000?

Your math ain't mathing. If one item is already at $1,000, but you need 10 other items, yet only get a discount for one item, you'll have a $9,000 worth of purchase that normally costs $30-50. When I lived in Washington state for a short time. I walked into a gas station after work and when I got to the register it had a big sign that said Unable to take EBT at this time. I asked the clerk what that was and he laughed and said you must work for a living. SPEECHLESS.

This issue was solved years ago in one of the worst areas of Philadelphia. It was approx 2008 when I read an article about it, I believe it was in Philadelpiha magazine or some similar magazine about the city. The article focused on a Korean man and his family that was running a corner store. His store, as well as other stores in the area, after entering the door you would basically be in a foyer waiting area. The counter was entirely secured with bullet proof glass. The open sections for passing money through were setup the way banks & check cashing places do it, where there's a section of bullet proof glass behind the main glass & you slide your payment to the side, or in a bin under the glass. People received what they purchased through a secure pass through mechanism. The author of the article was in the foyer asking questions about how secure the glass was when another guy in the foyer started running and jumping into the glass, bashing it many times, then told the reporter that yeah, it's secure. That's how that Korean family business survived, living their American Dream in the worst area of Philadelphia, without going out of business due to theft. Basically, that store was a giant secured human operated vending machine. That might be what these gas station convenience stores need to do.

The only idea I have is to stop leting customers into the stores. In my early 20s, I worked night shift at a gas station in the UK. We had one employee at the register and the other would run around the store to get what the customer wanted. The customers were served through plexiglass.
