The original version of Countdown (which still airs) has regular members of the public competing. Sometimes they'll have a mascot on their desk for luck. That's where this bit comes from. FYI 8 out of 10 cats does Countdown was originallyjust a one-off created for Channel 4's 30th anniversary "mash-up night". It worked so well they decided to keep it going.
@@jeffrey44 I've definitely seen a mascot once or twice over the years. Granted, it's not to the same extent as on Blockbusters where "mascots on the desk" seems to be the standard.
Bob is an ex solicitor ( lawer) but has been a fixture in British comedy for decades, his humour is surrealist - helped by his unique and very quick mind
Bob is very smart as well as hilarious. He just acts the clown. I've heard him mention in interviews that he prefers comedians who are silly (like Tommy Cooper and Spike Milligan) rather than those who try to be too clever. That's Bob's charm in my view.
The UK has a big coastline, so it's traditional for those from settlements next to the sea to carry around a small pouch containing sea water when they have to go inland.. for luck and so the heart of the sea is always with them
- Items brought by the people are just "lucky mascots". It can be any old crap, but the more random it is then the funnier it is! - "Yo! Sushi" is a Japanese food chain restaurant. So a "northern Yo! Sushi" isn't Japanese, it would just be typically northern English food such as a pork pie like Bob showed.
2:20 George Formby was an English singer in the 30s and 40s, known for his comic (and often lewd) lyrics. He was a favourite of the royal family, especially Queen Elizabeth II’s mother. One of his most famous songs is “when I’m cleaning windows” which is about his job as a window cleaner, which is what Bob parodied here
Just to clear one thing up a bit, the mascots are (generally) not actually brought in by the celebrities on 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, instead they are manufactured or found by the production department on the show and given to the celebrities to come up with stories for trying to get laughs. Sometimes they are outright given to people and even they don't know what they are getting until they see it, (which is hilarious to see the celebrity's face as they reveal it,) and sometimes there will be collaboration between the celebrity and production to produce something, (like the erotic cleaning book by Jon, or the crazy books by Sean.) There have been a few times where they let this little behind-the-scenes information slip, usually because Sean was annoyed or burnt out since he was doing 8 Out Of 10 Cats and 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown at the same time, (with appearances on other shows as well,) which usually led to him leaving the show for a while to do a tour. Both Jon and him took breaks from time to time to tour and the show brought in guest 'captains' to fill in for whichever one was on tour. Since this show was intended to be a one-off show and never intended to become a series, it adapted things from its crossover shows that it was parodying, (8 Out Of 10 Cats and Countdown,) and after the massive reaction it got, expanded on itself as the years went on, to include random stuff either inspired from other shows on Channel 4, or just add new and crazy segments, (like Joe Wilkinson's insane segments, or Jimmy Carr doing random stuff while the clock is counting down, (which was often actually done by stunt performers that 'sorta' looked like him from behind.)) You are totally right about the clips. Channel 4 needs a new person putting clips together, because most of them are very mixed and they reuse the same funny moments over and over again in different clips, which is too bad.
Never seen that one before! You have now got me back into all Bob Mortimer clips as not watched him since Shooting Stars much. Recommend Bob and Paul go fishing as well for a relaxing show. I'm sure one of us Brits will always answer a question about humour specific to the UK.
@10:45 Hi Mandy, Jon says "It's like a very northern Yo! Sushi" Yo Sushi is a restaurant chain here in the UK (and other parts of the world) that serves as the name suggests Sushi that serves diners via a conveyor belt system. I have been to one and it is nice (but a bit expensive) and I guess quite posh and novel in its delivery. Jon saying what he did was I guess both a joke on how Bob was displaying the Pork Pie to people and the fact that we in the north are not as 'cultured' and prefer a good Pork Pies to Sushi?
Nothing 'uncultured' about a good Pork Pie! Don't want to make this too heavy and it's just a joke, but if the Japanese can have their culture of Sushi, we English can have ours in the form of Pork Pies, Cornish Pasties, Scotch Eggs and Toad in the Hole!
Mandy, all of your questions have one answer: "He used to be a lawyer". Why does he lie so easily? Lawyer. Is he blind? Lawyer. Is he trying to do badly? Lawyer.
The competition isn’t important in game shows with celebrities. They are a vehicle for humour. The weird mascots are just for fun and mimic what sometimes happened in game shows with real contestants when they bring something like a teddy for support
The "mascots" are basically the contestants' good luck charms but are mainly there just for comedic effect. At the restaurant Yo! Sushi the food goes by on a conveyer belt so you just grab it without having to order. John was equating the pork pie presentation device to that.

The thing about 8 Out Of 10 Cats (and the spinoff 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown) is that the format isn't as inherently funny as things like Would I Lie To You. You do get very funny bits, but it's a bit hit and miss depending on who is on. Sometimes a random skit intersects like [Carrot in a box] 5. Show finishes with a conundrum worth 10 points. I don't think I have forgotten anything.
Countdown was the first show broadcast on channel 4 in the early 1980s…the original host Richard Whiteley caught pneumonia and passed away…he was a character…sad fact, but you always like facts about shows
I can't believe I said "excuse you" when you cleared your throat. My brain is on auto. Yeah, don't worry about the big laughs you don't get, normally it's just a local reference. Sometimes I don't get it either as it's an English reference and I'm Scottish. Oh, and Bob made up "seabag". He was just being random.
Bob is very bright, he's a qualified solicitor [ which is NOT the same as pimp or kerb-crawler ], the same as 'Attorney' in the States. So, it is safe to assume that when he appears stupid, he is doing it for effect. If he can't make up a really GOOD word, he will come up with the most ridiculous 'wrong' word he can. You've seen him on WILTY, and people know how he will make up the most bizarre things, which is why it is even more remarkable that the crazy bizarre things he comes up with there are really true, like the " hand lion " - who could possibly believe that?
I always liked 8 out of 10 cats does countdown better than 8 out of 10 cats, more entertaining. Also A League Of Their Own. You show do a reaction to The Royal Variety Performance 2019 - Mischief Theatre “Groan Ups” and the 2015 The play that goes wrong.
Bob Mortimer is a surrealist comedian, he’s more famous with vic reeves and the show u looked at shooting stars, where although being a quiz, the questions & answers were made up gibberish! It really was a half an hour of watching tv on acid! He also does a fishing show with Paul Whitehouse of Harry Enfield fame! Where he mainly falls in his arse! Vic & bob are quite funny!
If you want to understand 8 out of 10 cats does countdown, you should first watch Countdown. It is a dry, long running daytime quizz show. 8 out of 10 cats took over their studio, and two of their presenters, for a one off mash up. The result was so successful that it became a series in its own right.
Dearest Mandy, One of the main reasons I watch your videos is because of your continuously fantastic & sunny disposition. You have that rare gift to make us all smile irrespective of the topic. Don’t ever change ❤👍
Ha ha! You probably already know most of this: The actual game is the words and numbers, the rest is just for entertainment. The original gameshow Countdown is considered to be quite boring, so it seemed a fun gag to let comedians from the show 8 Out Of 10 Cats compete in it. It turned out to be a success, and it has gone on for years. The participants on regular Countdown are amazingly good, so it's less intimidating to watch 8OO10CDC. Then you can actually feel clever when you get longer words of solve the numbers game when they don't. But it's mostly just for the jokes and banter. It would probably be even better to watch at least parts of the original show, then a couple of episodes of 8 Out Of 10Cats Do Countdown, so you'll see the format. But seriously, these clips are much funnier when you have seen the context of the clip before. So we who have are probably more entertained watching you react to them than you are. Keep it up if you want, but you're missing out on at least half the fun.
The people on the show are there to bring entertainment value, not to win. It's not a quiz show, like the real Countdown, it's just an excuse to get some of the funniest people alive to sit around and bullshit over a parlor game. My guess is that Bob is just looking at the letters and seeing if they can inspire a funny answer without him caring whether the answer qualifies or not. (That's probably why all the clips have a you-had-to-be-there feel to them. They're really funny...if you've watched every goddamn episode. It's like when a relative is, like, "remember when your cousin Jenny slipped on the ice and accidentally threw a bowling ball through grandpa's windshield?" and everybody is apoplectic with laughter, but you weren't there, so you're, like, "yeah, I haven't heard this a thousand times before...") Here's a stand-alone clip that's about three-and-a-half minutes long. Context: The guy in Dictionary Corner is performance poet John Cooper Clark. The contestants are required to bring a poem they've written to read. Clark will judge the poems, and the best poem wins points for that team. I'm not into poetry, but you might enjoy it. Here is Joe Wilkinson reading his poem: th-cam.com/video/YBN2p-jlknM/w-d-xo.html Here's one of Jimmy Carr trying to wrangle a baker's dozen of kittens: th-cam.com/video/Qo0lbWhHLys/w-d-xo.html Cheers!
When Bob can't spell something with the words, he comes up with a word which is similar to the real word. Winkor instead of Winker. I'm sure youhave heard the Nursery Rhyme, 'Wee Willy Winkor'. Good Video and Very Good Reactions. 😊🤕
I think the problem you're having with this show is that these short clips give you no context. Countdown is a serious daytime show with a different host, Rachel Riley and Suzie dent with normal members of the public playing the numbers and letters. 8 out of 10 cats is an evening show with Jimmy Carr where they basically make fun of current news. They joined the two shows together and chaos ensued. After 9pm in the UK you can say pretty much what you like on TV.......so they do. ✌️♥️🇬🇧
Basically they all have to bring an item on. Basically just to get laughs as it's meant to be a comedy show. Otherwise it would be a bit boring like normal countdown
You've been wanting to see "a copper plip" of it? LMAO 0:52 Sweetheart, I've been saying that kind of shit for years and it always makes me laugh! lol It's also REALLY endearing. 😂😂😂 😍
Also, I have to say, this was a super funny "episode"! lol I really enjoyed this one, so, good choice! Btw, the items the contestants bring along are just funny mascots ("lucky talismans") included for comedic effect. Sorry, for the "Sweetheart"... it wasn't meant to be condescending, I meant it as a term of affection... me being so much older than you and you being so young and pretty! 😕 No offense intended! Edit to add: I'll try to do better in future! 🥹
Everyone brings a lucky mascot with a comedy element. It's just part of the show for extra laughs. Bob is like that naughty school friend who's always clowning about to be funny. Of course, he is purposely messing up. He has a Laws Degree. He is a clever man. However, I'm not sure where you are finding these clips, but it's still not doing the show justice. I'm gonna help you out and send you the link to the popular, very funny ones that mainly involve sean Lock for you to check out whenever you have a moment in your extremely busy schedule. However, I'm here for you and how you make me laugh Even when I don't enjoy the clip itself.
Thanks for your life advice at the end Mandy. 😉 ... Do you think you will be reacting to movies any time soon? I'm asking because i think there are many that would make you laugh. 🙂
I dont subscribe to Netflix, imo, due to horrific film cuti8s, yuk. However seen recall of Wednesday, tbh not demographic audience 50+ Brit, yet looks such fun. 5. Show finishes with a conundrum worth 10 points.
I don't think I have forgotten anything.
Very cool explanation!! Thank you very much Mr. Me!! 🤗🤗🤗🤗
Countdown was the first show broadcast on channel 4 in the early 1980s…the original host Richard Whiteley caught pneumonia and passed away…he was a character…sad fact, but you always like facts about shows
I do like facts! But poor Richard 😓🕊
Mascot, they bring a mascot & have a funny antidote
Thank you Not Earl 🤗
I can't believe I said "excuse you" when you cleared your throat. My brain is on auto.
Yeah, don't worry about the big laughs you don't get, normally it's just a local reference. Sometimes I don't get it either as it's an English reference and I'm Scottish.
Oh, and Bob made up "seabag". He was just being random.
Lmao, I always try to scroll screenshots! Haha, that suff happens! 🤪
Also famous for being Jarvis cockers lawyer when he mounted the stage and mooned Michael Jackson at the Brit awards!
Clips & compilations of a show aren't as enjoyable to people who aren't familiar with it.
North of England is considered to be very working class. So is pork pie. Yo sushi is a restaurant where food arrives on a convayer belt . I think
😂😂
Bob is very bright, he's a qualified solicitor [ which is NOT the same as pimp or kerb-crawler ], the same as 'Attorney' in the States. So, it is safe to assume that when he appears stupid, he is doing it for effect. If he can't make up a really GOOD word, he will come up with the most ridiculous 'wrong' word he can.
You've seen him on WILTY, and people know how he will make up the most bizarre things, which is why it is even more remarkable that the crazy bizarre things he comes up with there are really true, like the " hand lion " - who could possibly believe that?
😂😂😂
Bon Mortimer is a Barrister and therefore must be very bright in reality
I read Barrista and was confused for a sec! 😅😅😅
@@MandyCaneLane Thanks for the reply. Personally, I find all the cats does countdown compilations hilarious. I think you should give some more a try.
I never heard of any of this! Thank you!! 🤗🤗
They just bring mascots. Its no point to it. No loot. No money. I think this is the confusion with UK shows in large parts of the world 😆
I thought maybe it was like Taskmaster 😅🤪
Bob brings the funny... Lol what a strange expression
Theyre supposed to Lucky charms to help them win.
😂😂 They could have just brought the cereal 🤪
😂
If you want to understand 8 out of 10 cats does countdown, you should first watch Countdown. It is a dry, long running daytime quizz show. 8 out of 10 cats took over their studio, and two of their presenters, for a one off mash up. The result was so successful that it became a series in its own right.
That is a lot of homework 🤪😅
Lee Mack bringing his grandmother's ashes, umm, let's just say, that goes somewhere...
Somewhere or EVERYWHERE?
The items they bing is a mascot to bring good luck, But as is a comedy version of the real game show they silly
Dearest Mandy, One of the main reasons I watch your videos is because of your continuously fantastic & sunny disposition. You have that rare gift to make us all smile irrespective of the topic. Don’t ever change ❤👍
Aww shucks! 🙈 Thank you Al! 🤗🌸🌸
"Dearest Mandy..." Why are you writing to her like a 19th-century, lovelorn Romantic poet?
@@rollomaughfling380 You jealous? 😂
Ha ha! You probably already know most of this:
The actual game is the words and numbers, the rest is just for entertainment.
Understood! Will try and watch a whole one!! 🤗🤗
You would be great in this programme.
I dunno... I make up a lot of words 😅😅
It's like when a relative is, like, "remember when your cousin Jenny slipped on the ice and accidentally threw a bowling ball through grandpa's windshield?" and everybody is apoplectic with laughter, but you weren't there, so you're, like, "yeah, I haven't heard this a thousand times before...")
Here's a stand-alone clip that's about three-and-a-half minutes long. Context: The guy in Dictionary Corner is performance poet John Cooper Clark. The contestants are required to bring a poem they've written to read. Clark will judge the poems, and the best poem wins points for that team. I'm not into poetry, but you might enjoy it. Here is Joe Wilkinson reading his poem: th-cam.com/video/YBN2p-jlknM/w-d-xo.html
Here's one of Jimmy Carr trying to wrangle a baker's dozen of kittens: th-cam.com/video/Qo0lbWhHLys/w-d-xo.html
Cheers!
Jimmy Carr doing what?? 😅😅
Thank you!!
@@MandyCaneLane During the letters rounds, Jimmy does stuff to distract the players. This one involves kittens.
@@frenstcht ok, that made a little more sense 🤪😅
It wasn't really Lee Mack's nan's ashes. At one point he throws it all over the desk
God I hope not!! 😅😅😂
Lee’s stand up about his dead nan is absolutely brilliant.
When Bob can't spell something with the words, he comes up with a word which is similar to the real word. Winkor instead of Winker. I'm sure youhave heard the Nursery Rhyme, 'Wee Willy Winkor'. Good Video and Very Good Reactions. 😊🤕
Lmao, I have not! And what is with the Bandage Guys Emoji? You OK?
@@MandyCaneLane Brain injury due to trying to work things out. Ha! Ha!
IT'S BOB! 🤣🤣
Exactly 🤪
The lady with john (lucy) is his wife
Bob brings the funny, Mandy brings the sunshine. 🤘🏻
🙈🤗🌸
Bottom line is this is just the comedy version of a real game show.. And it's great!
I don't understand why they bring in mascots either.
My people! 😂🤪
You've been wanting to see "a copper plip" of it? LMAO 0:52
Sweetheart, I've been saying that kind of shit for years and it always makes me laugh! lol
It's also REALLY endearing. 😂😂😂 😍
Also, I have to say, this was a super funny "episode"! lol
I really enjoyed this one, so, good choice!
Btw, the items the contestants bring along are just funny mascots ("lucky talismans") included for comedic effect.
Sorry, for the "Sweetheart"... it wasn't meant to be condescending, I meant it as a term of affection... me being so much older than you and you being so young and pretty! 😕
No offense intended!
Edit to add: I'll try to do better in future! 🥹
Lmao, no worries Rockster! I am not offended at all and took ot to mean nothing less thank something kind!! 🤗🤗
I mess up words and letters A LOT 🤪😅😅
we wont tell you. what those things are... you will have to watch whole episode
Ha! Jokes on you Omar! A lot of people already told me 🤪😅
Everyone brings a lucky mascot with a comedy element.
However, I'm here for you and how you make me laugh
Even when I don't enjoy the clip itself.
Much obliged Charlie!!! 🤗🤗
I reckon the Cardigans night club is both owned and run by Jon Richardson
Thanks for your life advice at the end Mandy. 😉 ... Do you think you will be reacting to movies any time soon? I'm asking because i think there are many that would make you laugh. 🙂
Lol Colin!! Soon!! I just need to get a bit more organized!! 🤗
Has it rained yet?
Yes, a few times! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Check out vic & bob... Super 90s hilarious nonsense ❤
Love the donald trump wig!
I dont subscribe to Netflix, imo, due to horrific film cuti8s, yuk. However seen recall of Wednesday, tbh not demographic audience 50+ Brit, yet looks such fun. I am convinced best programme of 2022, I think I've become a little obsessed. My favourite song, Paint it Black played by actress on cello, phenomenal, imo. Recommend if you can, have a gander and thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Thank you Anita 🤗 I saw the song bit! Was really brilliant!!
"Where Bob goes, Bob brings the funny."
Yes 😌
He is just Bob.
Exactly 🤪
Bob doesn't care about the rules, just if people laugh or are confused 😏
Well he got me on both accounts! 😂🤪
Bob Mortimer is great but he's better suited to WILTY.
Sean Lock (R. I. P.) is his element on this show cos he's got other comedians to bounce off. (IMO) 👍👍👍
I wish Winkor was a real word
🤪😂
