Thoughts on new shocks from Fox Racing

  • Just some thoughts and ideas about what I think about the new stuff from Fox Racing Shox. This is the substantial stuff that I think is more significant than the introduction of the 38 last year.
Finally the Grip2 Damper is available on a wider range of forks, name into the 34 category. thank you Fox.
In reference to the "lockout monologue" or rant, it's aimed at the fork, although similar discussion could confirm the same for rear as well.

I always tell my full suspension customers to ride with the fork and shock fully open. Most are under the impression that you should keep it in trail mode when riding trails and they don’t realize the loss of performance they are experiencing. I personally like having high and low speed rebound so I can dial in my bike, but for a casual rider they likely won’t even notice or care. Just set it to the factory settings and send em out to ride. I regards to the new float x shocks I was told by a fox service rep that the new float x line has to be bled with a bleed machine. This could just be industry talk so you have to send it in or go buy an andretti bleed machine, but that concerned me. I’m the guy who asked about the nitrogen set up cause I want to start a shock rebuild business where I live cause there isn’t anything like that here and sending the shocks in takes forever. I just had to send a dpx2 into BTI to get the damper rebuilt cause it was having the problems you mentioned. What are your thoughts on nitrogen for shocks? Rockshox doesn’t use it and their stuff works just as well as foxs. I love fox but rockshox is really winning me over on its ability to be fully serviced without a ton of proprietary tools. I was able to do a full 200 hr service and replace the entire trunnion head on a rockshox super deluxe and it was straight forward.

The ifp still has a bleed screw so you can still bleed it by hand for sure. The Fox hand bleed procedure for the dpx2 is stupid. Use the method from rockshox

Nitrogen is kind of marketing crap but you need it for the needle fill. Lots of cheaper nitro fill setups from the motorcycle world for the regulator and hose. The Fox needle tool is kind of expensive and not rebuildable but I like it. You can use a regular needle and make your own hex bit or buy the Fox hex bit tip

Hey Bob! I replied on your last post to reach me via email and we could exchange info, maybe you didn't see that. Anyway, if you're inclined you should totally start servicing these shocks locally. The nitrogen isn't anything special, honestly, and you could probably get away with a scuba tank. The reason I like it is the convenience of not having to use a pump. I fill the IFP on Rockshox shocks with Nitrogen as well since it's so much easier and quicker. The initial investment is big but worthwhile.
On the note of Bleeding, Douglas is absolutely right. With some experience you can get away without that bleed machine. Fox likes to make things seem harder than they need to be since it appears to be something special to most cyclists. In that vein, I've seen people install a schrader valve in the IFP pellet bore. It is and has been done with success. The needle valve is more secure. But more expensive if things go wrong.
I agree that Rockshox makes things easier to service. That's a winning attribute for sure. Thanks for your thoughts on the high/low rebound adjustments! Please reach out or go to my website and contact me that way. www.insightbike.com

Agreed on both points. Thanks Doug.

@@insightbike hey, I did reply to the last post with my email but ill contact you on your website. I do want to start doing it locally as a side business. My main road block right now is the regulator. Im going to buy a food grade nitrogen tank and the fox tools for ease of use and so I can say I do fox certified service to increase my credibility. I've talked with fox and you can just sign a waiver and technically be certified by them to do nitrogen service on their stuff. In regards to the bleed, I was referencing the newest 2022 shocks. Fox just released their float x line. And that's the line they claim needs a bleed machine. I would love to see one torn down cause my shop most likely won't see one.

This is a great subject. Hope you keep coming with this type of content.
I think fox products in general are overrated and overpriced, they do not offer any additional benefit to justify the extra cost.

Thanks for the feedback. I absolutely intend to keep up the critique of the industry. Fox has gained a huge edge by using Kashima and everyone fell in love with Gold… again. It’s a crazy trick. And for the most part the best suspension products out there are not the forks and shocks offered by our near and dear Fox and Rockshox… Companies like Diaz Suspension Design, Vorschprung, Push, making tuning accessible and developing accessory’s to make the stuff work better… Thats where it’s at. And having Ohlins on the scene only made things worse as far as I’m concerned.

Here's a hot take. Lockouts are stupid in the rear too. Not just on the fork.

Don't like 'em. even though in this discussion I'm definitely referring to the front. I agree. I guess it keeps the designs cheap and easy. We need to move away from them.
