I don't know if it's the "new set crush" feeling I typically get, but I LOVE this set! I was (and still am) in love with the LotR set and Brother's War, enjoy the ONE set, and was okay with MoM. But WoE feels very fun! I am seeing many interesting cards and combos in games. I haven't yet added new cards to decks, but am spotting some potential additions. Great video, GSD, as always.
Can you explain why I should refrain from opening packs until after drafting? I'm toying with the idea of making a new account for more wildcards now that I have a better idea of what kind of deck I want to play and if leaving them unopened for some amount of time is optimal for some reason, I'll have to hold back the urge. Would this apply to the promo codes, as well?
The reason why it's generally better to delay opening packs for as long as possible is because rares in packs are duplicate protected, whereas individual card rewards and drafted cards are not protected. This means if you pick a copy of a rare that you already own 4x of in a draft, you'll get 20 gems instead of the card, because you can't have more than 4 copies. If you open a pack that contains a copy of a rare that you already own 4x of, it will instantly and automatically swap out for a different rare that you don't already own 4 copies of. If you open lots of packs first, you're more likely to get a few gems here and there, which are below the value of individual rares. If you open packs later when your collection is more complete, you're more likely to fill out your collection with rares that you don't already own.
Nice, thank you. While this is still valuable info, ultimately I think I'll stick with my first account because I need only 8 uncommons for your version of Rakdos Rats. I can look into rares like Karumonix and Lord Skitter, Sewer King later. This deck seems so fun. @@gameschooldadMTG
Haven’t seen any good info on those ‘blue’ quests that appeared this set. Might be worth a video. (Also - because draft also uses a hidden matchmaker like ranked it gets harder the more you play - even in Bronze. For small amounts of drafts it’s not noticeable though) Expect the Story Decks that are on the WOTC main page will be great for MWM
It looks like the 'Play 3 Quick Draft games' quest is part of the New Player Experience that's just been added, so I think it's just a one-off. There's not much else I can think to say on that, but I'll probably make a post about it to see what other people think. I haven't had a good look at the Story Decks on the website yet, but they might be pretty good. I'm sure there are other decent budget decks that could be made to at least get a couple of wins in the event. I'll work on that... :)
Concerning not having enough cards for the Midweek Magic WOE event. This might add some value to Jump In? Basically for 5k-10k gold you'll have 10ish WOE rares and some cards with synergies. Since the cards rewarded are, mostly, predictable; maybe there's a deck or two that can be put together that can scrape out a few wins? That'd likely be prime newbie friendly content. Maybe they'd make fun decks to complete quests with in Play modes while waiting to draft? Jump In's main detriment is the lack of a golden pack after spending 10K gold, as well as the lack of any potential rewards from drafts. But then it can target WOE cards and doesn't require a winrate, while offering a chance to practice and play with WOE mechanics with a somewhat equal playing field before risking resources on quick drafts.
There are some good things to be said about Jump In, but it's not for everyone. Being able to get a bunch of cards that synergise well is a great help towards building a new budget deck and not having to open any packs or use any wildcards to try it out. Especially if you pick the same Jump In pack more than once and have multiple copies of the cards. The rares in those packs are also often pretty viable in constructed.
Can't wait for the MS video. It looks like there are a lot of changes and its value is even greater now. Also, there are new free rewards (lvl.3, 7, 9, etc.) added, aren't they?
How about jump in events? How often give you cards of the new set? And the new rewards for draft are only a one time price o will they reapear every week/month/new set? Thanks!!!
I should have mentioned Jump In events at least briefly in this video, but I didn't think about that because I've got another video coming out on that format shortly. The short answer is: I would only recommend to do Jump-In events if you've done them a lot in the past and have already picked lots of older Standard packs (if your focus is to specifically build your Eldraine collection). If you want to build a wider Standard-legal collection (if you're very new to Arena) then they might also be good for that, but not for Eldraine specifically.
And that 1,000 gold for completing 3 Quick Draft games looks the same style as other New Player Experience rewards, and there isn't anything else that replaces it when you've done the 3 games either. So that all points to the fact that it's probably just a one-off reward to incentivise players to try out different formats.
I didn't play any Jump In! events since Streets of New Capenna in 2022 (I have been out of the game for a year, restarted a couple of weeks ago). I tried Jump In! yesterday, just after the Wilds of Eldraine release, and had 1 WOE-package in my first choice (Bittersweet) and another in my second choice (Faeries), the rest of the packages was from older sets (LTR, DMU, BRO, ONE). Don't know if you're guaranteed 1 package of WOE if you didn't chose it earlier or I just got lucky. Will keep playing with my Bittersweet-Faeries deck until quick drafts come along (have to save gold for those quick drafts). 😛
Hello, thanks for the explanations, as always. I don't like drafting because that's very stressful for me. Moreover it's always at this moment you will lose connexion (it happened to me yesterday and I could not choose my cards after the first booster... Still managed to get 4 wins, thanks to the tough cookie. Very powerful card !) I prefer to play non ranked game after getting platinum rank and just do my daily quests/wins. 1 hour a day is enough to do so. I get most of the cards like that and it's ok for me.
So you just buy packs at that point? I’m fairly new and have never drafted before so i’m not sure what else to do since there doesn’t seem to be a jumpstart
Hello, welcome ! I think you can follow the advices of Game School Dad. He wrapped up everything well in this video. (and the other ones on this subject) About me, I did not buy packs yet with the gold I saved for now (I was not interested to play Lotr so I did not buy anything) I still have one draft token to use (and the new one I will get with the mastery pass) After that, I will just make my daily wins and daily quests each day (1 hour per day as I said). And buy few packs with my gold (1 or 2) as a reward until I run out of gold. It's not very optimal, but I think fun is an important part of the game, I enjoy to do things like that now.
My plan for building a WOE-collection: 1. Playing the Jump In! event to get the 10 new WOE-packages and getting my 4 daily/15 weekly wins the easy way 2. From September 15th on doing 5-10 quick drafts for set sollection + getting enough gems to buy the Mastery Pass 3. Hopefully I have enough gems now to buy the Mastery Pass 4. After rank reset on October 1st using my draft tokens from the Mastery Pass and the store with discount to do 1-3 Premier drafts to get gems back for next set’s Mastery Pass. 5. Excess gold can now be used to buy packs 6. Opening packs I have a question though: Are the Mythic card rewards from the Mastery Pass duplicate protected?
The mythic ICRs should work the same way as normal. If you get one that you haven't got 4x yet, you get the card. If you have already got 4x of the card, you'll get 40 gems instead.
@@gameschooldadMTG Thanks for the clarification! So, it does really matter to wait for those rewards before opening the packs as the rare/mythics in the packs are duplicate protected.
@@arduano7872 Yes, but I don't worry about it too much. I'll open some packs before completing the mastery pass and risk losing some value, but I won't craft 4 of certain cards unless I really want to use it immediately.
Jump in is brutal right now, played for an hour last night and lost every game. Seems people held onto to their LOTR jump in packs and are steamrolling WOE packs
I’ve also notice that the longer the set has been out the more chance you have of the rare’s being past to you in premier drafts, I’m assuming it’s because people have built their collection up and are just focusing on building a better draft deck rather than rare grabbing. Has anyone else noticed this too?
You can prove this statistically via 17lands. Rares like MOM's Invasion of Theros is utterly useless in draft. During the first 2 weeks, it's last seen until around pick 4. Afterwards, it's last seen around pick 5. I still wouldn't recommend rare drafting until after pick 6 or 7. That's my method and usually finish each draft with around 5 rares and 3.5+ average wins per draft. Don't ever rare draft pick 1-4 especially - pretend those rares are commons. Premier draft really, really penalizes you for averaging less than 3 wins, at which point you'll certainly be better off rare drafting in quick draft even if you get 8 rares each draft. Sorry for long rant.
I have a question (which you don't need to make a video about because I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority), but how much am I shooting myself in the foot if I forgo the mastery pass and only spend all of my currency on drafting? I really enjoy drafting and limited formats, and don't really want to save gems for the mastery pass, but I wonder if the payout is worse for limited purists like myself? 😅
If you’re only concerned about limited the main thing you’re missing is a draft token in the mastery pass. That’s assuming you don’t care about opening packs or collecting cosmetics
Given you complete the mastery pass, you get 1200 gems, 4000 gold, and a draft pass. 4000 gold is equivalent to 600 gems at the rate at which you'd spend them on a draft (40% of one), and a draft pass is of course worth 1500 gems. In total, that's 3300 gems worth of drafting from the mastery pass - and you spent 3400 to get it. So as long as you complete the mastery pass up to the last relevant reward (level 48) you're only losing 100 gems, 1/15 of a draft, in order to get all of the bonus packs/cosmetics. If you really don't care about packs, wildcards from packs, comsetics, or rewards to any degree and *only* play limited, then you are throwing away 100 gems. But if you care even a little bit about that stuff, the amount you get is certainly worth the 100 gems. If you didn't think you'd complete much of the mastery pass or don't want to wait until you hit level 48 to spend those 3300 gems worth on drafting, that'd also be a reason to skip the pass.
So with the release of WoE there was a ban announcement in game. If I craft these cards from wildcards now, like you said in your wildcards video, would I still get wildcards back? Because I have no idea how to find out which cards are gonna get banned before they tell us in game.
Usually they are announced before they are banned. The Historic cards that have come along with WOE were pre-banned, so there's no way to get a wildcard refunded for crafting those ones.
@@gameschooldadMTG I see, thank you for the reply. And also for your videos. They've helped me quite a bit. I've started around a month ago and feel like I've been doing quite well thanks to you.
I was wondering, because I've read it somewhere but I'd love someone to confirm : Do events like draft, constructed etc, pair you with people that have the same amount of wins ?
They is definitely an element of skill-matching in the Draft games, but I don't think it's confirmed anywhere if it's based solely on number of wins in that specific event, or on your general win rate for the event type. In Constructed there's also some leaning towards being matched up against players with a similar win rate, which keeps the games more balanced and fair. I'll have a video on the matchmaker and all that coming out in the near future, but there's a lot to be said about Eldraine at the moment :)
Did you notice they nerfed the way you get golden packs now? For me who doesn't have any of the legal sets it's horrible that I only can get golden packs from woe packs...
