    I came here after watching Pakastani workers, using very simple tools to build a very large gear. I am fascinated by both videos, the one with the simple tools and the one with the high precision tools.

    after a career of machining spur gears up to 160 inch diameter 16-30 inch face, 18-24 inch bore and up 140 teeth i found this just astounding. i knew what i did was dinosaur technology, but i had no fricking idea it was this advanced. the one thing my gears would be considered a "bastard" size tooth profile, designed in such a way to be cost prohibitive for a competitor to buy a hob cutter to fit each gear and pretty much guarantee a gear replacement would come from us. [SUGAR MILL extraction]

    • @629Justme
      @629Justme ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @ Paul M I was wondering if you could tell us where these gears are being used. I am not suprised that these large gears provide a need. I am surprised that there is an entire industry, all over that can support itself by making them. I can imagine that the prevalence of windmills have increased the need for large gears. Where did they go before that. A few are needed for ships. Another few in the turbines that are behind making electricity at a water dam. How many more applications use extremely large gears? thanx.

    Where can I find so giant gears? In the power plants or inside the cargo ships ?

    • @FiferSkipper
      @FiferSkipper ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cargo ships (typically) use reciprocating diesel engines that run at the same (very low) RPM as the prop so a direct shaft is all that is needed. Gear trains like this are needed to convert high-RPM sources like gas and steam turbines, to a lower RPM for the prop shaft. From what I can tell, only military/naval vessels regularly use these in ships. I can imagine that large factories may use gear boxes on this scale too but I've no experience with that. That being said, I doubt power plants would need any gears like this because the electrical generators work at the same high RPM as the turbines.
      Funny thing, when I was in the Navy, it was well understood that the USN doesn't 'buy' the bull gears (the largest final gear in the train) for its ships and subs, it leases them!!! Who knows if that it true but if so, it sure speaks to the cost of such large-scale, precision machining.

    Don’t know why folks have to have music instead of the sounds of machines working.

    Are we seriously supposed to believe that the blonde-haired lady with the clipboard works at that factory? Health & Safety Training was part of my apprenticeship (back in the early 1980s), and tales of long-haired blokes getting dragged into large machines by their unrestrained hair were common.... and horrendous.
