Agreed, in a lesser actor's hands, Sheldon may have been insufferable. But Parsons really made Sheldon a complex, layered human being.

The character I find myself admiring most in the end is Sheldon's Mom - she may be a creationist, but she is still pretty sharp in her own right, and often sees through the other characters' personal issues clearer than they do. And as for raising a son whose temperament is totally opposite to hers, she's a lot more tolerant and supportive than most American moms in the same situation.

Very good point you raised about sheldon's mum.
Despite first impressions making sheldon the smart one and his mum the stereotype of the mid west dumb creationist, intelligence is about a lot more than just book smarts.
Take sheldon, without his mum and the support of his close friends he would be unable to live and succeed independently, i.e. his roommate Leonard has to drive him to work everyday, and his friends constantly have to do damage control when sheldon screws up socially.
His mother however is a fully functional and independent adult, able to own a home, support herself, raise a challenging child, and is heavily involved in her local community, i.e. through the church. All the above would not be possible without emotional intelligence, street smarts and decent enough social skills.
Take your typical office, who ends up with the promotion, the book smart person who actually produces the best work and works the hardest or the person with the best social skills and is able to influence and convince people that they are in fact the best for the promotion

The best example of Sheldon’s growth as a person is the difference between his behavior in an early season where he and Leonard collaborate on a paper and Sheldon acts like he was the only one whose opinion mattered when Leonard wanted to present the paper and the same scenario in a later season where he waits for Leonard to click the mouse together to send their paper off to the university server.

I really love Sheldon's growth over the course of the show. He gradually learns to let other people in, and become more comfortable with expressing his emotions. I loved when he initiated a hug with Leonard for the first time.

The reason Sheldon is so effective in his growth is because audiences love a good redemption story. When handled well, like Sheldon, we can see a person who grows beyond their shortcomings to understand the value of perspective.

One of the other big factors in Sheldon's regression by the time we meet him in season 1 is his friendship with Leonard. While Leonard is his best friend the fact that Leonard was a pushover and always let Sheldon bully him meant that he didn't have to grow as a person because the people in his life always bent to his will. Because Leonard did this Raj and Howard followed suit, resulting in him creating the perfect nucleus of friends he controls.
Then of course he met Penny. And suddenly Leonard was standing up to him, someone objective was questioning his actions and not afraid of him, challenging him, but also showing him love and respect. This is why he and Penny have a better relationship because he respects her and can't so easily bully her (though she does baby him from time to time, like a big sister) and why she plays a massive role in his growth as a person, so much so that in a later season Beverly mentions that it was Sheldon who defended Penny to her and got her to come around to team Penny, when in earlier seasons he cared not for Penny and Leonard's relationship outside of how it affected him.

Frankly, I can’t wait for your takes of Leonard, Howard, Amy, Bernadette and anybody else on the show.
It’s always interesting seeing other views on these characters and this show that isn’t always so negative or just, “oh it’s trash blah blah blah”

I think Sheldon definitely falls into the Michael Scott audience sympathy because rather than the characters being likable or even decent is mitigated by the fact that the characters (for baffling reasons) treat them a bit nicer. We as the audience are conditioned to see them as “not that bad” even though they’re practically monsters, because the characters themselves treat them better than they deserve. In reality, Sheldon would be alone and the truth is, he’d deserve every ounce of misery he receives because it’s not like he gives anyone else happiness. Even Amy is in an abusive relationship that she has too low self esteem to leave.

I’m still waiting for Toxic Takaways from this show because boy is there A LOT! Sheldon has a lot of traits not just simple outright cruelty towards people around him and “friends” who refuse to fight back because they know Jim Parsons is responsible for making them just south of billionaires

Sheldon was an asshole. He was an asshole to his friends, to his colleagues, even to his own wife. It took 12 seasons, 279 episodes for him to finally acknowledge that fact. I'd call that mighty slow character growth.

In Young Sheldon, Sheldon is the least entertaining member of his family. The show only soared when they sidelined Sheldon and focused on Georgie, Missy, Mary and MeeMaw.

"Manages to tip in his favor". Let's be real, the others give in because sheldon pouts and has a tantrum when he doesn't get his way. He's a horrible friend, especially to leonard. This trait continued to the end of the series at the Nobel prize ceremony, it took amy chewing his ass and seeing that the others were still in the audience in spite of the fact they threatened to go home for him to show true humility and gratitude for their impact on his life.

He was still egotistical and self centered. The difference is he got a small amount of development and the show just pandered to him.
Having said that Sheldon is one of the most fascinating characters in tv history. He is unquestionably unique and the breakout character. But in many ways he’s also the worst character and directly responsible for the show ending

I loved and still love Sheldon. It was such a relief to see someone like him on television, and I am still comforted by his presence in reruns. People like him are real, and I think they showed his struggle quite well. And I like that he never had to stop being himself, but just be better.

I don't really hate Sheldon but I do hate the way he's written, especially when the writers bend over backwards for him to get this way. However, I am ashamed to admit that I once had some of Sheldon's less desirable personality traits. I took it as a wake up call and starting working on fixing myself.

A positive/nuanced discussion of a male person from a feminist channel? As a leftist who remembers 2014 online feminism, this is... a fantastic change. I can totally support this, i've always supported womens issues but never called myself feminist because of many feminists discussion/representation of a lot of things related to men/masculinity and some important cultural intersections especially for those who are cis, het and poor/neurodivergent boys/men... but this is great. And imo it's applicable to both genders who identify with these traits, but my perspective is limited to my experience. Great content/commentary.

Probably in the minority, but I always watched TBBT despite Sheldon, never because of him. Jim Parsons is a great actor, but the character, always the least enjoyable part of the show for me. For obvious reasons, didn't watch his spin-off either.

It's funny. I've been watching alot of clips from big bang and young sheldon lately. Sheldon who I considered to be the funniest character. I started to hate and resent and not find his behavior funny anymore. His behavior is played up for laughs and it's a show he's a character but if I knew a self centered arrogant, whinny, self important, always right know it all that always puts others down because they think less of me there friend and think more of themselves. I'd want nothing to do with him. Good thing is all exaggerated but I think the genius might be on the spectrum. I think he's autistic.
