Here’s my bonus comment. The spring loaded automatic center punch is a must have forever vehicle. It’s the best thing for breaking a window if you were to be trapped need out. Conversely if you come up on the situation where somebody needs to get in a car, it’s fabulous for that as well. And all my years with the rescue squad I make sure I had one in my belt pack all the time. Just put it in the corner, give it a push and the tempered glass shatters.

I do A LOT of flat box furniture assembly. I agree the 90 degree drill attachment is a key item. Same for the flexible extension. Bonus points for using “waller” in carrying plywood👍🏻

I got that exact right angle attachment when I needed to add studs in a tight wall and as long as you hold the head FIRMLY, that thing is a total gem.

Matt keep up the great videos. I am from Southwest Georgia and have been enjoying your videos for about 6 months now. I have gotten back into wood working after not having a shop for over 6 years. I have been fully retired (for the second time) now for 2-1/2 years. I have been doing volunteer Christian construction work with Mid-State Builders For Christ; Macon, Ga. since September of 2019. We just had a new 24' wide X 50' long with 10' walls shop put up. I am in the process of getting things finished up on the inside to move all our stuff, equipment, tools, etc. out of our double carport into this new shop. Can't wait! Thanks again from a fellow Christian for your great videos sir.

That center punch is great to keep in the car. They will break a window in case of emergency a lot better than those hammer types.

I have the 6 inch Starrett combo square and I agree that it’s totally worth the cost. I use it during every project. I actually just bought the 12 inch version (gotta treat yourself at Christmas!) and I’m loving it just as much. Another small tool I’m loving right now is the Starrett 819 Hinge-Locating Automatic Center Punch. Basically it’s a spring activated center punch with a concentric collar that makes marking hinges a breeze. It’s also on the pricey side but definitely quality. Thanks for the tips!

  • @Digidoc316

Been carrying a Swiss Army knife for YEARS! Use it EVERYWHERE!! A DEFENITE MUST HAVE !!
Starrett makes high-end precision equipment; I wouldn't warranty an engine rebuild without them!
Got the Kregg pocket hole jig 8 years ago for Christmas and I use it all the time! I need to pick up the Visegrip clamp to lock down the jig independent of the jig base.
One I didn't see but consider a must is a high quality speed square. Had the cheap ones and they went out after just a couple of years. The one I have now is heavy gauge cast aluminum and machined smooth; got pencil notches for most average sizes to speed marking full sheets.
I'm cheap; I use a 10 penny nail for a center punch. With the tip ground conical and then heat treat it to toughen it up, a light tap with the hammer and I've got my drill piolet punched.

My indispensable tool is a Victorinox SwissTool I’ve had for over 20 years and it has seen me through a tonne of projects. It’s essentially a Swiss knife but with pliers and the case also holds an Allen-key with an assortment of screw driver bits.

First. You are my new favorite wood worker. You’re just a genuinely good guy. I listened to your interview on Steve Ramsey’s podcast. Anyway.
I have a Swiss Army knife. My kids got it for me for Christmas way back in the early 90s. That year we went to visit my mom. She got a flat box, roll around cart and asked me to put it together. She had just a few tools in the house and exactly zero Phillips head screw drivers. Of course, that was what was needed.
Being Christmas Day, no place was open and she wanted it put together before people came over.
I popped out my shiny new Swiss Army knife and assembled the entire cabinet with that little old Phillips head screw driver.
My hand was sore for a day, but my mom was happy and that was what it was all about.
I keep a pocket knife on me at all times. I get a multipack during the black Friday sales so they are like $3 - $5 a piece. I end up losing them eventually.
Anyway, I lay just pull out the old knife, sharpen it, and have it on me
    Thanks!!!

My favorite small tool is my 12", cut-down, Collins WWII machete crafted by some Gyrene in the S. Pacific in his "spare" time. i use it for nearly everything (just like the Vietnamese long ago taught me to do), from sharpening my carpenters pencils to settling contract disputes. Can't beat it for that "personal" work that plagues every small shop owner. Try it and you'll instantly know what I mean. 😎

  • @dansquires5499

I have the 12" Starrett with multiple heads that I got for a close friend. I recently got the 6" at a yard sale. Having been a "garage" woodworker for 30 plus years I can honestly say they are one of the best brands around. I've gotten to the point that I'd rather pay a little more for quality, that paying less for inferior tools. Love the channel, keep up the good work.

Another thing worth noting: The Taylor Tools store link in the vid description has a great selection of high end combination squares in their "blem" section. They are super discounted and only have a blemish or smudge (mine had a smudge). You also get a free gift if you spend different tiers of $. I bought the 6 inch combo square and a Narex dual bevel 0.060" marking knife (fantastic), which also allowed me the free gift of a Glubot bottle (also fantastic) for $59 US shipped to my door. JUST the square would have normally cost like 80-100.

I have the spring loaded center punch and the "plastic" squares, and a complete set of Starrett squares, 6" 12" and 18" as well as a center finder body and use them A LOT. I've had all of them over 20 years, and they still perform as well now as they did 20 years ago. I also enjoy watching your videos. Almost forgot, I also have a Kreg pocket hole set. Best idea I've ever used for assembly of cabinets, etc.

YES!!! The Starrett square is worth it!! It will put a smile on your face every time you use it! Great list. The Swiss Army Knife is worth having. I like the Explorer best, it has a few additional tools but still isn't too bulky. It adds a magnifying glass and also has a 2nd sharp blade instead of the fingernail file. I keep a needle inside the tweezers, it stores away nicely there. Also I have the eyeglass screwdriver that fits inside of the corkscrew. The combination of magnifying glass, needle and tweezers helps with any splinters I may get.

I sometimes run into problems when using a center punch or scratch awl to mark a hole for drilling. In certain types of wood that have a significant difference in density between the summer growth and winter growth, the punch tends to drift towards the softer areas.
I bought an inexpensive set of self-centering drill bits that works like a champ! No more crooked or misaligned hinges or other hardware!

I love my little swiss army knife. I use the "executive" model. Keep it razor sharp and use it dang near every day!
My favorite small tool that I use in the workshop every day is a scratch awl. It's basically an ice pick, but I use it for marking lines and making divots for my drill to register, super small parting on the lathe, cleaning dust and chips out of small grooves, and all sorts of other stuff. For 3 bucks at Harbor Freight, it's the best thing I ever bought there that I didn't realize I needed until I started using it.

I have #1, #2, #4 and I have #5..but opt to use my Leatherman "Wingman" model, the plyers come in handy and as for #3...Holy Cow...I NEED that for sure. As I get older, trying to handle full size lumber is a struggle for me by myself. Thank You for saving my back and arms and dinging the corners and edges and surfaces of new 3/4 inch plywood for those special projects. Personally, always reaching for a ruler or square and a sharp pencil. Thanks Matt!

Hey Matt! God bless you! So… I bought the similar woodpecker brand of that recently. It feels so awesome in my hand and so smooth to use. It’s been about 6 months and I do NOT regret it. I am frugal. I shop at Harbor Freight, and they give a HUGE value on many things. I have probably 10 F and (can’t remember the name) Irwin style hand grip clamps. Only 1 had to be tossed. I have a few 12” combination squares. One I inherited from my gramps. It’s decent to use. One I don’t know where I got it, but it’s used. It is ok to use. I got from harbor freight. Yeah… not so good. Point is… it is good advice to spend a little extra on the combination square. I’m too cheap to throw out the HF one, but nice enough not to give it to someone. *Spend a little extra on marking gears and enjoy what you are reaping in the end*. PS thought automatic center punches are what we used in EMS to get through car windows. EMS, meet Woodworking! Woodworking, meet EMS!

Apparently it’s true; great minds do think alike. While watching your latest as I eat my dinner, I’m trying to decide what is my favorite shop tool. Lo and behold, I decided it was my 6” Starrett combination before you mentioned yours! Actually you can find the 6” for around $65. It’s the 12” that will rock your wallet.
For a pocket knife, I favor the mid sized Case XX Stockman with the surgical stainless steel blades. The long blade’s perfect for digging out splinters. I’m from PA so I have to support the home team that’s still making them by hand up in
    Bradford.

Swiss army knife. I used to carry the large executive model. One time, I got up on a roof to repair some aluminum flashing and forgot my tin snips. Yep, used the scissors on my SAK to cut the 22 gauge flashing. Thankfully it wasn't much because even though it did the job, it was very hard on the fingers squeezing the scissors.

Great video Matt and thanks for sharing. I have a kind of similar Dewalt right angle drill attachment except it has a 12” flexible shaft and I think maybe a shorter bit holder, the model # is DWARAFS 12”. I have used a 1/4” universal joint socket on an extension to hold a bit before as I don’t have that particular type of right angle attachment that you showed and while that has gotten me out of some jams before the flexible shaft attachment has been really handy for getting around tight corners or spaces where even the other style attachment would be difficult to reach.

Sometimes expensive small tools are worth it.
I make pens. To make a pen, the first thing I need to do is cut the pen blank to length, about 2" to 3" long.
Next, I have to drill a hole the length of the blank, which means I need to find the center of the blank.
I tied various tools and methods to find the center, but none were really acceptable to me.
Then I saw a Woodpecker's limited run centering jig at by local woodworking store.
It was around $30 ('Woodpeckers' translates to 'hold on to your wallet').
I picked it up. it was solid and well made (I did say 'Woodpeckers', didn't I?). I bought it.
It was absolutely perfect and a joy to use (as far as marking pen blanks is concerned)

Great video my friend. I just purchased the impact attachment. What do you think would be the best adjustable dowel jig that can be used for both thick and thinner boards? Thanks, Steve

Seems like maybe you could use those two Dewalt right angle drilling jigs together to make a U-Turn drillng jig when you've forgotten one of those pocket holes and just can't fit the drill behind the small form pocket hole jig. Maybe this is the case where 'two rights form a (drum roll please... ) wrong-way-drill-jig?'

Matt, GREAT stuff!! Your links to the Massca pocket hole jigs needs to be updated. Page not found but did get me to the site. I had not heard of them before but they seem to have VERY nice products. I already have a Kreg K4 but I think I will add the Massca 2-hole for tight spaces as you suggested. I love that it is magnetic!!

Woodpecker tools are also insanely expensive. Great quality but is it worth it?

So with you recently falling in love with dowels over pocket holes, are there times when you would prefer a pocket to a dowel?

my wife's grandpa let me pick through some of his tools that he doesn't use anymore. My eyes lite up when I saw a few 6" Starette rulers. I love them but don't think I would ever pay full price for them. That said, my buddy always says, "buy once, cry once."
